Tamron has a very good relationship with Sony, Sony owns shares in Tamron. Teleconverters are also really difficult and expensive to make well

great review!, I have the 28-75mm f/2.8, and I'm working on the 17-28mm, this lens will complete the trinity for my a7III. photography is a hobby of mine since the 70's early 80's ( Pentax k1000 ) there was no image stabilization back then, so it doesn't bother me that the lens doesn't have any, the a7III IBIS is enough for me. I'm not into all the little details high end expensive lenses produce. Sharpness! is what I like, and on that Tamron always delivers. I like how Tamron's made decent photography affordable for us monetarily challenged photo fans

That's such a valid point. With these Tamron lenses , you are compromising a bit on the features (and, to a lesser extent, the build), but you are no scrimping on the performance from autofocus to image quality.

As always, an excellent concise review. You remain, along with just a couple of others, one of my main 'go-to' reviewers for lenses and kit in general. I have now ordered one and eagerly await delivery. I will do my own detailed evaluation of this lens. I expect shortly to be selling my 70-200 f4 G OSS equiv, based on anticipated faster better performance with a pretty useful close focus ability. My intended application is mainly ad-hoc day to day and travel use. If it's as good as reviewed then I may also explore the other sister lenses 17-28 and 28-75mm but I suspect that the relative use case those optics is less, relatively, compelling. Currently I'm shooting a broad range of primes (24, 35, 55 and 85mm with a view to also buying a 20mm) when I have a specific assignment in mind - all good for small size, high IQ, speed and bokeh. On zooms I shoot a 16-35 f4 G (I rarely need faster on wider glass, except for astro) but might eventually go for the highly regarded GM equiv. For single lens use (very light day use/travel) then Sony's 24-105mm f4 G OSS has a performance better than I dared hope for and was my low heft choice vs the possibly flawed GM 24-70. As observed when the light drops or I need more bokeh it's easy to pack a single prime to supplement

Great review Dustin. I just got this lens and I'm loving it so far. Wanted to ask you a question since you seem to be very familiar with this lens. Is it normal for it to click when you invert it? My copy seems to click louder than usual, at least louder than my other zooms. I'm assuming it's the new VXD motor since the clicking stops once I mount it to my camera body and turn it on. Haven't had any issues with the actual lens thus far but just wanted to know if it's a bad copy that may have issues in the future due to the louder than usual clicking.

@DustinAbbottTWI

That's due to a floating element design (helps with better up close performance). You won't hear that "rattle" when the lens is powered on for that reason (the element is engaged)

Well.. the Sony is for aps c and I own the 14.. there is a lot of mustache type distortion and bad quality copies of the 14mm. That really isn't a question I can answer for you, as I view these lenses as being suited for two different purposes. Do you need more reach for wildlife, or do need a faster maximum aperture lens for events, weddings, portraits, etc... 180mm isn't a lot of reach for wildlife or birding.

@dustinabbott I got my 70-180, Is it normal to hear a slight clunking sound when tipping the lens forward and backward? When I put it on the camera and turn it on, the sound goes away. Tamron said it’s normal but I see no one mentioning it
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 4 жыл бұрын
Often people are hypersensitive when they get a new bit of equipment that they've spent a lot of money on. What you are most likely hearing is a "floating element" that is part of the design to allow excellent performance up close (and why Tamron says it is normal). I hear this concern often from people that have bought a lens with floating elements and aren't familiar with them. It's nothing to be concerned about if that is all that it is. Just monitor it, and if it gets worse or operation of the lens seems impaired, that's when to contact Tamron.

You talked about the motion blur at 180mm if the shutter speed is too low; because this lens doesn't have an inbuilt Image stabilization. What would you say, if I am using a tripod for the shots. My Sony A7r3's IBIS should be good enough to cancel out the wind effect if I am on a tripod at a low shutter speed with this lens? My use is: I want to use it for Landscape Photography. hi Dean, this is a great lens, period, but if you are primarily stopping it down and using it off of a tripod, you might want to consider something like the Tamron 28-200mm RXD. It's got very good image quality and will give you more zoom range. The 70-180 is really a better buy if you want to shoot at a constant F2.8.

Thanks for the review again! I have both A036 and A046, but this is still a tough choice. I'm glad you acknowledge the limitation of A056 relying on IBIS only. Many Sony believers kid themselves that IBIS is good enough on its own even at a telephoto range. IBIS produces acceptable results at 75mm, but I seriously doubt its efficacy at 180mm. Another possible deal breaker is that the lens doesn't have any tele-converter option, at least for now... I guess I'll hold on to my Sony 70-300mm for a while.

Hi Dustin, I'm really hesitated about purchasing this lens. From 17-28 & 28-75 what I can say is that this series of Tamron lenses are really sharp, but I what bugs me a lot is that the bokeh rendering of these lenses are really not as smooth as some other competitor leases . I would love to see some side by side comparison with 70-200 f/2.8 L or GM leases, thank you
@gurudeclan

I have the 28-75mm and I agree, bokeh could be better. I would say they're more "workhorse" lenses than artistic lenses only the build quality is only OK. They're high quality, budget lenses, but not without compromises.

By the way, I use a Sigma 135 instead of 70-200 on my A7R3 (including for event work) and couldn't be happier. Not as versatile as a tele zoom but when you combine other factors like sharpness, size etc, and pair it with a very high resolution sensor, it's an option worth considering.
@kingweddingmedia
@kingweddingmedia 4 жыл бұрын
Is agree with the other reply, for me, if you want good bokeh use a prime lens - these zooms are “get the job done” lenses more aimed at being able to get the composition right in camera. If bokeh is your number one priority, go for the 85mm or 135mm prime, I’ve had both and they are both excellent. I have also preordered this tamron as I am so impressed by the sharpness of the other two, but I’m not chasing bokeh from this, it’ll predominantly be used for wedding ceremonies and speeches, landscape fun and sports photography. For portraits I’d be reaching for my 135.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I agree here. I think the bokeh is actually quite good from the lens for a zoom lens. Any further comparisons may or may not happen. I don't have either lens on hand, so it would require a set of circumstances where I could have both lenses at the same time.

I have preordered the lens and received it on Saturday. However, I decided to return it. The lens sells for 1500€ on the European market. IMHO, the price is too high for the built quality: same plastic like on the 28-75 or 17-28, but almost double the price. I feel ripped off

That's definitely a high price for the lens, so I don't blame you.

A Frank you get all 24 megapixels and you would have a 105-270 focal range. A7r would be a beast though.

Why 180 and not 200
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 4 жыл бұрын
Several reasons, but the biggest is that the 20mm compromise allowed them to create a smaller, lighter lens that retained excellent optical performance.

1 dollar is 0.88 € (Euros is the money in for most Europeans)...That Tamron cost 1199 USD in the US...it should cost 1058€. But guess what, retail price in Europ is 1499€. I won't buy Tamron anymore, no matter how good they might be.

I completely get it. Unfortunately the problem is not the relationship of the Euro to the dollar but the Euro to the Yen.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Theorically yes, but 1USD = 107yens, and 1€=121yens. So even with taxes, nothing justify that price gap.
