The same button deep inside my soul is activated when I hear Virgil Donati or Allan Holdsworth. Truly a gift from beyond for all of us to observe, admire and cherish. Question... if us drummers go to bed hearing Virgil's drum patterns in our heads, what does Virgil hear while on his pillow while trying to sleep? Peace from Detroit MI.

Seems like Virgil is trying to reinvent itself, his solos use to be pretty centered around the layered groove ideas and I’m noticing he’s not doin that so much anymore. He’s trying to push himself in other ways. Keep it up Virgil, very inspiring. Not sure if you remember me, I use to come see you at the baked potato all the time from 06-07 and sat right to your left, always had the beanie.

Virgil is alone at the top of the technical mountain. Of all time. We as musicians can always argue the subjective of voice and creativity....But if you know what you ARE SEEING HERE and you know thing or two about the current and historical drum landscape, then you can not argue that this man possesses the highest, to this point, level of overall, across all categories, of technical proficiency. I also happen to love his musicality but its the chops that are the greatest ever. Period.

Have you ever been at the beach, and seen a kid just messing around in the sand with their back to you? Just casually doing some sand sculpture that you don't think much of. Then a bit later you walk by them and are astounded to see an incredibly detailed, multi-sectioned and fundamentally strong sand castle. That's what 2:20 - 2:50 felt like.

*Ill say it again, I think Virgil may be the single best drummer who has ever lived. There are things Virgil has played drums in a way that 1) hes been the only human on earth who can play it, and more importantly 2) he’s the only human on earth who could think it up. Playing its 30% of the issue, the other 70% is WHAT you choose to play and why. Virgil has played things I simply do not think another human could play, or would ever think to. He’s seeing something in drumming that’s very few ever can/will.*

Yes..!! Amazing....but even with skills maybe far beyond most drummers... As in his advanced independence from his left to right side... Even with all though, they is a lack of emotion...or groove that gets me involved..and I'm not new to this... Been playing since I'm 9..and still playing And far advanced at 66 ... For me ..at thr beginning it was 70's Steve Gadd with Chick...then Lenny White with Chick and Forever... Then many..many drummers ..most were progressive... But, till this day since Zappa 70's and Vinnie.....No One can play with skill and groove other than Vinnie Colaiuta.. No One..!!! Till this day almost 50 years later No one can hold my attention like Vinnie..!! I have seen him live many times in NY and LA..even back when he did clinics. For me....NONE are Better...!!
