In 1985, BBC-TV, in association with the American cable channel Arts & Entertainment Network (A&E), produced two documentaries about Tanglewood, the music venue in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts that serves as the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. They feature interviews with renowned composers and conductors Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Kurt Masur, Seiji Ozawa, Andre Previn, Gunther Schuller, Joseph Silverstein, and Leonard Slatkin. “So You Want To Be A Conductor?” and “A Place To Make Music” focus on the annual summer academy attended by emerging professional musicians, and chronicle Tanglewood’s origins and development. Written and directed by British composer and documentarian Herbert Chappell.

The pianist who played the string instruments was my teacher. She was a very strict teacher, but after watching this video I understood why she was so strict. I wanted to be able to play orchestra score like her, but I lacked the technique. But I learned a lot from her. I'm glad to be able to meet her again here. Now that Mr. Ozawa has passed away, I think they may be teaming up again in heaven with Bernstein. I'm very happy to be able to watch this video.

I was a student there the very next year, in 1986, and also had the honor of studying under these living legends. For that I am forever grateful.

The reason why I am watching this is because I’m in my sophomore year in high school. I’m pushing hard in band because I’m very late but I’ve always been interested in the orchestra and classic music. I’m interested in my flute (I also play the bone) and I also want to play the violin soon and achieve my dreams. Can you believe it? I was gonna be a vet but, Someone has to keep the orchestra alive as we become more and more online-
