Hi there. Really great review. I’m in South Africa. I bought a BJ 40 around 6 months ago. Tank not available here yet. So I can’t compare. Anyway it drives like a dream. I’m 2 time Wrangler owner and my BJ turns heads and comments every time I’m out in it. I had all the chrome dipped in black and what a difference it makes to the exterior. I prefer BJ due to roof removal. I have been off roading and overlanding for around 10 years now but haven’t done anything much in BJ yet. I also have a fully kitted Jimmy which I use and abuse massively. So can’t see myself doing the same in BJ. I’m just enjoying riding on the road which is magic. Cheers.

I personally think BJ looks great. Also a one-time Jeep driver (and would buy again, if they weren't so damn expensive now), and BJ has the longevity on the market that tells me that it will last - even if it lacks some modern feel of Tank. But this is not to say - Tank won't last just as long...

Greetings and Salutations Demitri. Tank is a winner for me, especially if they are similar in price. Comfort and creature comforts is important for me at 63. It was nice to see telescopic adjustable steering on the BAIC BJ 40. Economy of fuel around city would be interesting to see and variety of motors . Well done on another fine translation. Good to see our Russian friends are enjoying a larger variety of 4 WDs as well.

Hi mate, I agree, I'd still pick Tank 300 over BJ40 even if it was available in Australia, but still think that BJ40 would create a great "counterweight" to Tank 300 as another solid representative of a Chinese manufacturer that makes good off-roaders. Especially if BAIC managed to release it some $5k cheaper than Tank. To some people it would make a difference!

Thank you for the words of support mate, but I'm sure I'm biased in some ways, as someone who wants to give competitor brands a chance and deliberately not become a badge snob... That's a form of bias, I'm sure! 😉🤷‍♀️

I saw on a Australian channel where if you drive to the speed of 60-80km/h on those dirt roads at 8:00 , its a smoother drive than driving at 20-50km/h, as long as there are no potholes its better to drive faster than slower.

I wouldn't be surprised. Suspension on Tank 300 is very very impressive.

The Tank 300 isn't around $70,000 in Australia, it starts at around $48k, the Ultra is $52k and the Hybrid is around $10k more than that. Love your vids!

Glad you love the vids, you clearly don't listen to what I'm saying though. Local prices to Russia are 70k AUD. Given FYI to those who are interested. I'm well aware how much it is over here.

Even though you specifically asked the South-Africans, but I will still add that the BJ-40 is available in Saudi-Arabia since a few years ago (I think it also exists in other Gulf states).. The Russian automotive market is a bit distorted right now because almost all competitors to the Chinese brands are largely unavailable (we all know why, right). Therefore, the Saudi automotive market is more interesting to study because automobiles from all brands worldwide are available, but still the Chinese brands are winning the competition over there as far as I can see!

Very good points my friend and yes, Russian market is very skewed due to the obvious reasons. What might be an interesting topic for another time though is that ALL vehicles are available, Toyota Prados etc, it's just the prices for them are sometimes double of what they used to be, and they are imported through other countries, including Saudi Arabia or China.

Thanks for the translation! We have both in South Africa, the BAIC is significantly cheaper than the Tank. BAIC is available in Turbo Petrol & Diesel, the Tank has Turbo Petrol and Hybrid Turbo Petrol. I'm test driving both today.

It looks like BAIC should be cheaper as it looks more basic and "old" in a sense of design, it's nice to have choice when picking a vehicle, good luck mate

@@ValueCarsAU agreed, in Russia they seem to be the same price though. Have you seen the 2024 BAIC, now it's nicer than the Tank300 I recon, pricing will however most likely increase.

I just purchased a 2021 BJ40 in Costa Rica. There’s a BAIC dealership here now. The car appears to be a 2019 but is somehow considered a 2021 here.

Very interesting! I personally love the "legacy" look and feel of BAIC and would personally consider buying one if I had loose change and they offered an attractive price tag for us here in Australia.

The BAIC is clearly an earlier generation than the current crop of Chinese 4WDs. Looks cool but is really a museum piece. Just goes to show that newer electronics are not necessarily better.

I agree, it's old technology compared to Tank, but so is something like the original Jeep Wrangler JKU that I had and loved it. Not everything is about the bling and planets rotating in your fov instead of a speedometer. I thought it's a good comparison of almost identically priced vehicle that started selling quite well along side Tank 300 in Russia.

Interestingly, the BJ-40 and Jeep Wrangler are actually distant cousins. BAIC-Daimler-Benz established a joint venture 20 years ago and designed an off-road vehicle platform for China in Beijing. It was codenamed Challenger and used the Jeep trademark based on Wrangler technology. Later, as Chrysler withdrew from the Daimler Group, this plan was canceled, and the platform was eventually developed into the BJ-40. This is why the BJ-40's suspension system looks old.

many Chinese car maker are owned by provincial government like Shanghai (SAIC), BAIC, Cherry, and Changan. then DFSK (military car producer).

Believe me the tank300 is way beter off road than baic b40 plus. Tank300 top class has lockers front to rear. Baic has a terrible traction control like jimny way to jurkey. Yes not all tank300 electrical works good.
