Going to use your comment to just state this: That character looks like something a kid would come up with when they have an assignment, forgot to do it and quickly need to make something on the way to school. Kinda like that scene with Lisa from the Simpsons. Kid: "Oh no, that was today? Wait... Here's some coloured clay, some pin tacks, ..... There we go. It's a floopy... yeah."

Well, the Spy Kids 1 story plays on the idea that Floopy wants Junie’s ideas for his show. Maybe the Tape World monster was something Junie created in class (i.e made of school supplies) and Floopy sought to steal the character itself. And that whole idea was a dead storyline arc.

I was in late elementary school when the movies came out and some of my peers were extras in the movies so I wasn't super young but I was still young enough that it scared the crap out of me imagining the horrors of being made into a foogley and held against your will. Personally i think that they thought the "Tape World Monster" would be too scary for children. That's just personally what i think. Since i think it having a bunch of pins on its head, its eyes that stare into your soul, and its uncanny proportions might scare children . But maybe it's also possible that they couldn't figure out how to make the costume work, maybe they had trouble making it so they ended up scrapping it? It's definitely something that was developed enough to have a model, colours, and a complete prop. (honestly who knows! i know nothing about movie production so i could be wrong!)

While I've never seen the Tape World Monster before I do have a vague memory about the toys in the kids hand (one of which was unknowingly the tape world monster). In the special features of the 1st Spy Kids movie DVD the director said something very particular about those action figures in the kids hand that escapes me. It was something like oh those were my toys when I was a kid or those were a leftovers of an unfinished project prior to making Spy Kids. I think my mom still has the DVD so I will verify just in case Tape World Monster actually goes further back than the production of Spy Kids.

As both someone who has spent their entire career in retail and also a collector, I can say that the cardboard standees, also known as shippers, typically are destroyed by being crushed in the retail establishment's cardboard bailer. As a result, these shippers will become instantly scarce and very collectible.

@3:02 that happened to me with the song that Neo is listening to on his headphones while asleep at his computer before he is awoken by Trinity via text appearing on his monitor. I was talking about it at work (I worked at an Ultimate Electronics as a manager in the car audio department for 4 years) and one of the front desk guys said "Oh that's Massive Attack, the song is Dissolved Girl on the album Mezzanine. I have a copy i can lend you". It was one of the single most helpful musical advisements ive ever had!

Junie actually experiments with designing his own Fooglies, which is something they mention a couple times in the beginning. I haven’t seen Spy Kids in a long time, but that might be one of the ones Junie made, and that’s why it isn’t as professional looking and isn’t quite on the show. He even tries to show his dad the OCs he makes, but his dad shrugs him off in the car. I’m pretty sure he created both drawings and his own action figures for it.

I wonder if maybe the pins in the head was considered too scary and that's why they dropped the life-sized character. Floops foogleys scared the crap out of me as a kid as they were because of what was done to them (not scared of the foogleys themselves but how they were made) and imagining pins in my head would have been even worse.

I worked at a huge theater for 3 years, so I confirm that media places like theaters and stores just get way too many standees to keep track of. At least where I was, sometimes things would be kept by employees (I have a Danny DeVito from Dumbo) but even the cool ones, like a Millennium Falcon cockpit from Solo, are simply too big for anyone to have space for them, so they're destroyed. Honestly shocked something as small and ultimately insignificant in the movie thing like this made it so long.

I'm actually not sure what's more surprising. That it got solved at all (internet mysteries and loose ends are common bedfellows), or that it was a mystery in the first place. Spy Kids was a fairly successful film, and I would have thought more people would have recognised it.

I watched a movie at the drive in(1980) when I was 5 yrs old. It had an alien that threw discs at people to kill them. For years I wasn't sure if it was even real. But then DVRs were invented, and I then just began recording any horror movie that would play on any SAT channel that was made between 1975 and like 1983(You could set parameters on the older models and do keyword searches). A year went by and sometime in 2002-3 I woke up one sat to check if anything was recorded. There was a movie called "Without Warning", and I started to play through it. Much to my surprise, this was my missing movie, and I ran into my bedroom and began jumping on the bed to wake up my then wife, lol. Come to find out, the movie was the main inspiration for Predator, and even stared a young Kevin Peter Hall as the alien, who would also play the Predator in 2 movies.

I swear I remember seeing a cardboard display for this movie as a kid, and the more I think about it, I'm pretty sure the display was of the two main characters doing an action pose with an explosion in the background, and several items of theirs being flung in multiple directions, and I'm pretty sure this action figure was one of those things, which would explain why it seems to be its own piece. Granted this is all hazy memory, but I did go to the movies a lot as a kid so I saw these kinds of displays often.

I work at a place where we get alot of these cardboard stands and signs. I've taken a few of them home and so have other employees, also if one of us dont have dibs on it a customer can buy it but most of the time we end up tearing them up and throwing them away. The company makes us tear up and break everything before throwing it out so that randoms can't steal them from the dumpster.
