Filmed a 2-player playthrough of "Tapestry" published by Stonemaier Games. Let us know what you think about the game in the comments section below!
*Yes, blue accidentally forgot to spend a resource during her first conquer action so the win is invalid, but hopefully we were still able to properly show how the game is played =) (Also, make sure people are spending resources because it's easy to forget!)

Loved this video. Just got tapestry and was trying to figure out how to play a two player game. I thought you did a great job articulating the rules and demonstrating gameplay. There are sooo many ways to collect points in this game you sometimes forget to your own detriment all the ways you can collect vp points. I had to slow and rewatch various parts of this video specifically the scoring vp points during the “collect income” portion of the game. Explaining how tech cards worked was really helpful . This game is terraforming mars meets tiny towns meets an a condensed version of scythe resource management. Thanks for such a great overview break down I will be definitely tune into more of your vids in the future.

Played my first game tonight. The single fact that when the game's over, you're already thinking about how next game, you could get more points and really optimize your play style, really indicated good game design. Obviously, due to figuring out some intricacies, our game lasted a bit longer that it would normally and our final scores were pretty bad (90 vs 67, I lost, but i'm primarily in it for just playing and the experience), but I fully expect that to improve over times played. Love the playthrough!

Thank you for doing such a great play through and review! I have heard issues with how swingy civilizations and tapestry cards are, but I think if you accept that this may happen, it’s actually very fun to just figure out the puzzle along the way! It may be frustrating to see a big difference in final scores (which seems to happen in this game), but perhaps you just have to recalibrate a little! 20-50 point difference may still be a “close” game haha!

Great review - should help people see if this game is for them. I had a lot of the same issues that you guys mentioned. Balance issues with the civs and tapestry cards. Feeling like there aren’t enough interesting choices to take on your turn. I also didn’t like that the point spread in so many of my games was huge. About half the games I played had a point spread of 100+ points - a game is less exciting for me when it doesn’t feel close.

At 59:30, I believe Jamey has ruled that you DO get to take the bonus of the space before moving up due to a roll of the science die. Basically, you roll the die, but don't move up until you've completed your actions on the space you currently occupy.

Really appreciate your thoughts on the game! I've enjoyed it at 4 (and, surprisingly, 5) players and I've solo-ed it a few times. Naveen, I also wish there was one more action to do in the game; while I like the simple advance or take income turn structure, sometimes it feels like there should be more (I think the capital city puzzle may be it, but so far I haven't found it all that engaging). And Monique, I agree that this game is all about timing. It's all about setting yourself up to have those nice combo-tastic turns, which I do find fun, but it's not always something I look for in games. Like both of you, I have some issues with Tapestry, but it's also an excellent game that I've been happily exploring this last week.

What's funny, though, is now that I'm starting to get my head wrapped around the game, I see myself taking longer on my turns. Not sure that's a good thing lol. AP would definitely be a problem for some players. Theres some very easy to apply filters for the mic in editing (or in OBS software if your using that) so that the lower db is cut out, like 2 of my lights in my studio hums quite loud due to fans but it doesnt exist in my videos cause I set it so that it doesnt record anything below a certain treshhold, again theres YT videos explaining all that :)

Thank you both for an enjoyable play-through (while I patiently wait for my own copy to arrive...). I really appreciated your comments about the buildings, as I wish the edges of the pieces had been more squared-off to better indicate 2 x 3, 3x 3, or other "footprint" on the city board. I almost feel like there could have been some other accomplishments focused on the city board itself (most area covered, tallest skyline, etc.). It's become obvious to me that getting your income buildings out early will set you up for more productive future turns, and those that fail to do so will almost always fall irrevocably behind (which you demonstrated by the 3 or 4 actions Monique was able to take after Naveen was finished with his game- it's a weird form of non-synchronized parallel play. The science track seems underwhelming when compared to the synergies found on exploration and military in particular, and I've read that the players who focus on advancing along the science track tend to struggle during the mid-game. Well, Jamey never promised a perfect game, and I'm still looking forward to getting this to the table (next week according to the tracking # I received today!). Thanks again. 😊
@BeforeYouPlay
@BeforeYouPlay 4 жыл бұрын
Wow that was an excellent analysis actually. I totally agree, achievements for the capital city maps would be amazing. You're absolutely right, it does seem more lucrative to explore and conquer. I played a game where I tried to go up the science track early on and I crashed and burned. Let me know what you think of it when you've played a few games if you don't mind! I'd be curious to know how your thoughts change, if at all.

Nice playthrough and review. I think I'm in the same boat that theme sort of 'pasted' on as flavour works fine for me. I have ordered the game and expect to receive it within a week or two (EU). It seems like a bit of a mix of Terraforming Mars and Terra Mystica, possibly with (even) less player interaction. I'm quite sure I'll enjoy it, I like looking for combos and this game probably has plenty. If anything I don't have a game like it in my own collection, most civ/terra games are owned by friends. I do feel like the randomness/luck factor might be a bit too swingy for me, if so, I might consider giving it away or only bringing it out when playing with people who enjoy that a bit more.
@BeforeYouPlay
@BeforeYouPlay 4 жыл бұрын

@@BeforeYouPlay Right! So we just played our first game, it was a 4 player game. I posted about it on the FB group, due to laziness I'll just copy paste it here ;) ---- First game is a wrap! It was a lot of fun. End game scoring: 1) Heralds (red) 263 (me) 2) Craftsmen (green) 232 3) Merrymakers (blue) 217 4) Entertainers (yellow) 151 The rules were very easy to understand, it didn't take long before we were trying to figure out what would give the most points, rather than how does this work. (Mind you, our group has played things like Terra Mystica, Terraforming Mars, Scythe etc, so this was very easy to understand) In the end we figured there's so many ways to get points and so many different combos/mini-engines you can potentially use, We don't think the game would ever play out the exact same. The Merrymakers, unlike their name actually went heavy military (knowing the player this wasn't a surprise to us), An amazing turn was when he went into "Tanks" (Military III). He toppled one of my outposts, that netted him the 2 topple achievement, together with 7 points + points for each territory die and the landmark to fill an entire district for a resource. The other topple he did was with a trap card when I tried to conquer one of his territories, which was very annoying since it meant I had to go all the way around to get to him again. The Craftsmen went heavy on tech and huge in Era 2 due to Capitalism. This little fun engine however left him with too few resources to catch up to the Heralds in the tech tree, meaning he missed out on all the landmarks there. The Entertainers unfortunately fell behind a bit, we were however pleasantly surprised when they went to entertain space which gave them quite a few points, unfortunately she happened to just miss out on a few achievements and had less combos with tech/tapestry cards, it felt like she was always a step behind. Maybe she tried to focus on too many different things, will see in future games. The Heralds felt pretty versatile, I went heavy on tech at first, Big scorers for me came from 3 things really Tech card combos: Tech track itself, Lithium-ion Battery and Assembly Line allowed me to repeat the Telescope (1VP for discovery tiles in your supply) a couple of times, I think this netted me around 50 points on top of 3xpoints for tech cards during income. Terra forming in Era 3 netted me 25 points and also allowed me to place the big ass Rubber Works landmark in a nice location to both fill a row and district. And to finish it off in Era 4 Exploitation allowed me to get some more resources to use my AI Singularity (end of tech tree, placed on military) to conquer all the way to the middle, granting me both achievements for the middle and toppling outposts (both second spot) in addition I had a lot of armories and territories by that time, so the scoring during those conquers and end-game scoring for territories went up pretty high as well. It surprised us how many more points you get later on. I think I was at around 40-50 points when I entered Era 3, feeling I would never get above 150 let alone 200, but as the game progressed you can get a lot of stuff if you manage to find it. The thing I am most concerned about in the game is the random/luck aspect. But that'll be like 20+ games before I'll allow myself to make a real judgement on that. In this game some things did feel 'lucky', but more so the die rolls than the tapestry cards and getting a resource as opposed to points feels more 'lucky' in era 1-2 as opposed to later on. The tapestry cards can possibly swing, but you can get quite a few of them and even with ones that might not seem as good at first can work very well. I mean I thought Terra forming would get me like 5-10 points max, but because I was able to place my landmark so nicely it not only gave me 5 points for it, but also a resource allowing me to prolong the era and place even more down. While the game is easy to play there's this constant idea of trying to get the most out of your turns/resources by trying to get something that leads to some other benefit while also keeping in mind that you might want to be at a certain place on a track before others. Which we all really enjoyed. Theme-wise we think the little story the tapestry cards tell is the part we enjoy the most, the landmarks are a great look on the table, but not much more than that.

@@kenrickcarlsonkeh191 hmm that would increase the power of tapestry card gain though, which might make going for multiple of them not as useful since you'll have greater chance of getting the one you can work with on one action alone. I'd suggest doing it similarly as the tech cards, but only have 2 on display & 1 option to draw blind. If a trap is displayed, just reshuffle it into the tapestry deck & redraw. That way you still get to mitigate luck, but maintain the secrecy of traps (& an added 'bonus' for those that draw blind)
