Tapestry was one of the most anticipated Stonemaier games, following the success of Wingspan. Promising a 4x experience that plays in 2 hours or less, Tapestry delivers that by abstracting down the experience and turning it into more of a puzzle, advancing along multiple tracks, triggering their benefits as you go, and combining your Tapestry cards, track development, player race and more into a puzzle that you need to figure out as you play.

The “feeling of struggling to make every resource count” is similar to what I feel when I play Everdell. I always feel like I won’t fill out my city in Everdell. Somehow it always works out.

Only played multiplayer once (2 player) and I agree with all of your points. I really like this as a solo game. It's one of my favorites. I find it very satisfying to build up my engine and try different things each time I play, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. I do occasionally play with a variant where whenever I draw a Tapestry card I draw 2 and choose 1. This helps me feel that I have a little more control over my strategy in terms of the Tapestry cards. The Automa deck is very simple and fast to execute so you can just focus on your own strategies without getting too distracted.

Ya I've seen that variant and been tempted to use it. Never have yet.

@@BoardGameCo i recommend giving it a shot if you play it again before giving it up. I don't always do it, but sometimes I want a more casual game. I do the same in wingspan. I have all the expansions, so sometimes when I play solo I use both bird trays and have 6 cards face up in the market. Again, I don't always do it, but sometimes it's nice. Evens out for the Automa because they have more access to birds they could grab too.

This is one of those games that I and the people I have taught it to just enjoy. I don't really get into the cult of Stonemaier or the Haters of Stonemaier, an equally divisive cult. It is a fun track moving game. I thought this one worked for solo, but multi is where it is at. I think there are a couple of factions that I just leave out of the game and just focus on the ones that mesh best together. Competitive games with asymmetry are very hard to balance.

Ya, I kept trying. Wingspan manages to stay in my collection for now but this one is a little hard to table.

@@BoardGameCo I beleive Stonemaier games will improve it with more expansions. Like already, first expansion improved many things (interesting and unique trap cards, civilizations in this expansion are more interestig to play with in my opinion, starting short term goals, and building possibilitiee in tapestry cards and Science tiles, etc..) I think sudoku puzzle will be improved in upcoming expansions, new terrains, perhaps some interesting mechanics that makes placing buildings more interesting. Also tech cards will be improved in upcoming expansions for sure, more buildings there and perhaps some interesting mechanics. Also exploration tiles will be improved, perhaps in exploration tile can be found some old ruins building or somehmthing. Overall there is room for improvement, and it is stonemaier games "thing"to improve games over the expansions. But i can see why others would consider this game ok/good at tis point. For me it is good, and I know it has potential to be great in future. I enjoy playing it, so for me, I will definately keep this one and see what the future brings ;D

@@SocratesRR90 I have prepared my box for solo. All the landmarks stay in the box, except of course the ones I get. I have sorted out the decks and after a game I put it back shuffled and well. I have the player pieces for both Automa and Shadowplayer separated, so I don't have to go through all the houses etc. 3 minutes was sharp, but doable. All in all it is not too bad to set up as some people think.

Tapestry is a strange beast. The expansion did help with the balance issues, but it's not quite fixed. I do also prefer this as a solo game. It basically feels like a very over produced roll and write, rather than a epic civ game. The puzzle is still fun for all it's imperfections. I was surprised you didn't mention the arbitrary use of the buildings and how they don't fit on the grid.
@BoardGameCo

Agreed on preferring it solo. I almost thought I'd keep this for the solo but I prefer other games in that time slot.

Tapestry is probably in my top three favorite games to get to the table, but I have to agree with you on the tech cards. Even the ones that give a little more than a resource or point value are really not giving you much. I think I would love to see a future expansion add an entirely new tech deck to swap out (similar to the extra visitor cards of Viticulture, or the Exiles and Partisans deck of Root by Leder Games), that could give you new powers when you unlock tech. Maybe get one tech card to the top row and you unlock the ability to steal an opponents resource when you topple one of their outposts. Or another could let you conquer another players space tile rather than a space on the board.

This is my favorite Stonemeire game. I’ve noticed most people that don’t really like the game are big fans of more traditional style civ games. I also really enjoyed your video with Tom on the top 100 games.

After 150 plays of Tapestry I can see a few things: good Tapestry cards give you good scores, regardless the civ you are playing. Awesome civs only score accordingly with awesome Tapestry cards. I will never would join a tournament for Tapestry, since the randomness is mean!

I don't care about unbalance. I prefer not to use the adjustments. A bonus resource for a certain Civ is fine. But the ones with negative points or resources, I don't like. It's a satisfying enough game for me. I don't need an even playing field. The Tapestry cards are also unbalanced, and very hit or miss, depending on the situation. So why would you nerf a cool civ if you're still going to have luck of the draw giving someone a possible advantage? Also, I like to have an excuse when I lose. :D

So conclusion is that Scythe remains still as the best game from Stonemaier at least for me, I own whole collection of it. I enjoy solo mode and with more players Scythe is even better, also there is Rise Of Fenris add-on which brings Scythe on next level. Also what makes it one of the best competitive board games is that there is almost zero randomess and all is up to your skill, strategic thinking. .I don't feel I need any other game from this publisher too.
