That is one of my favorite things about Snarky Puppy. They are all incredible musicians in their own right, but they still go crazy when their bandmates do something incredible during a performance. Mike League, who is the band leader, always gets a crazy look on his face during nearly every solo that someone else is doing. It's so nice to see them enjoying their own music as much as we, the listeners, do.

Tuvan throat singers are using a totally different technique - overtone singing. While she is using polyphonic singing. Lalah actually explained in another video, that throat doctor inspected her vocal cords with video camera - her vocal cords work differently than regular people's - they create 2 openings instead of one, which allows her producing 2 controlled pitches at a time

That is not tuvan throat singing. Tuvan throat singing is essentially overtone singing, which means shaping your vocal tract to emphasize certain overtones already present in a drone tone, for instance with the 'r' shape which filters down low frequencies and amplifies higher frequencies. What she is doing here is splitting the break between head and chest voice. This requires a high amount of air volume (expel all the air in your lungs in 1-2 seconds), and the right tension in the vocal cords. The closest thing I can compare it to is the sound someone makes when they're exasperated. It is possible to modulate this by opening your throat to make b2 intervals up to Maj3 and maybe a 4th with difficulty. I have played around with this before, but have never met anyone else who could do it, and certainly no one who has actually executed it as effortlessly as she has here.

Lol at "Black girl magic" given that would imply that all black girls possessed the same talent when 99% don't. And while Lalah is unusually gifted, what she's doing is nothing new, as the Tuvan and Mongolian throat singers have been doing it much longer and there's also a German woman who not only does it, but also demonstrates how anyone can do it with enough practice..."White girl magic" lol.

Can I just thank you for not pausing the music at 5:15? It's the least of your accomplishments but it's truly gratifying to watch a reaction video of someone who can actually feel the sacredness of performances like this and know there's moments where you just CAN'T pause the music; it would be practically sacrilegious. I enjoyed every bit of watching you groove and be awestruck by Lalah and Snarky Puppy. Still to this day, after so many years, this performance brings tears to my eyes and watching others experience it for the first time and appreciate it as much as I do brings me immense joy. Thank you.

Yes! Yes! Yes!! I’ve been listening to Snarky for years now. I was so excited seeing that you were going to react to them. Musicianship at the next level. I couldn’t wait for you listen to the end. Jazz is very cerebral and her knowledge of theory is astounding. Her application is crazy too, she doesn’t just default to jazz riffs, she is interacting with the chordal changes and is one with the band. That stuff is hard to hear and execute unless you a are a student of Jazz. I’m glad you geeked out on this.

Lalah went to Berklee College of Music. There, she learned what horn players were learning. She wasn't content in being just another vocalist. She wanted to learn what the instrumentalists were learning.

Music is in her blood, Lalah was raised into jazz/soul, inherited her dads vocal tone and then she naturally went to the best music school and excelled even further into musical theory. She knows music!!!

Tara, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your reaction of this video. Every though some of your critics, in the comments, have pointed out the wrong name of the song, and maybe your alleged miss-naming of the vocal technique that she used to blow our minds at around 6:00, you are REGAL in your reaction to this masterpiece. Your beauty, your style, and movements are stunning. Please continue. I'm now a new subscriber and a new fan of Snarky. As for Lalah, and her father, I'm an old fan. I'll always love them. Keep up the great work. You brought me this performance because I rarely keep up with recent news of anything. I would not have seen this if it wasn't for you. Thank you again and surprise us by reacting to some of the suggestions from your fans. I'll be waiting.

Tara Simon, Her Father was legendary Singer/Songwriter/Musician/Arranger Donny Hathaway. I encourage you to listen to his music, his voice. You'll be able to hear the rich quality of her low register, and where she got that from. It's unfortunate that we weren't able to get more years of MUSIC from Donny, but what he left us was a Beautiful Legacy.

TARA! I can't believe you finally watched one of my FAVOURITE VIDEOS on KZfaq! I have been watching your reactions for months now, but this one seemed to have hit your musician spot pretty good. It was amazing to see your body unconsciously reacting to the weird change in chords from the instruments, and also to the amazing improv from Lalah. To whoever understands a MINIMUM of chords and harmonies this video is mind-blowing! Thank you for a great reaction video!
