Targhee Trailhead Camping
This free camping area is ten miles west of West, Yellowstone. Sharon has listed the GPS coordinates on the screen. This place where we stayed is actually a trailhead. We called the local National Forest Service to see if it would be okay for us to camp here. They wanted to know if we were hard sided, and they wanted the name of the trailhead. They said it was okay. We parked in the middle because they had posted warnings about bear, and some locals had told us about a woman being attacked by a grizzly bear recently. We wanted a nice clear site.
We searched for somewhere to stop. We weren't comfortable with the roads. They were passable, but they were a long distance before we came to the campsites. The Targhee Trailhead was a great place for us to stop.
This camping area is ten miles from the town of West, Yellowstone. Then from West, it's fourteen miles to Madison. Madison is where you enter Yellowstone.
