Humor aside, Tayrl Is a skilled knowledgeable mechanic. Can fix anything, even if he gets irritated in the process. Not only did he have to diagnose and get this snowblower running, he had to diagnose and reverse all the DIY "repairs, " Not only did he bring this equipment back alive, he saved something that looks pretty new from going into the dump. Good video and very instructive.

Taryl, you are one of the few U Tubers to call a bolt by it's actual size and not by the socket size. Try going to your dealer and ask for a 10 mm bolt that holds the carb on. No, it's a 6mm bolt with a 10mm head, not a 10mm bolt.

They must have looked at those rockers and saw they weren’t making contact with the valves and thought “ no wonder it doesn’t run, better tighten those up”. 😂

Taryl, you are definitely a man of much talent and experience. You fix things that most shops won’t touch but probably lost your keester on this one. I’m betting that this was the last one of those that you will ever work on. Hopefully retirement is in the near future since the small engine industry has gone to “throw away” hell.

TARYL,I used to hate when my customers would say,I tried fixing it but I may have made it worse or I couldn't get it back together. Then they would wonder why it cost so much. I would tell them to just bring it in next time,don't try it yourself. Great video Taryl

Taryl I feel your pain. In the 45 years in automotive repair, the DYI guys were some of my biggest problems. Even worse were the ones that said the guy down the street that "used to be a mechanic" worked on it!

MTD to me always stood for “Minutes Till Destruction”

MTD years ago was great. They are under a lot of pressure to compete with overseas manufactures. It’s a whole new world. My 1974 MTD 524, 5 HP lasted till 2006, with only “wear items” needing replaced.

I have a HUSKEE branded MTD snow thrower brought from Tractor Supply several years ago. It might be a POS to work on but it's heads above the ancient Yard-Man MTD POS I inherited from my Step-father. If I remember correctly it had a 42" auger belt that went from the engine pulley and lever controlled idler/clutch, then around two guide pulleys to turn the corner into the auger housing and finally around the large auger pulley inside the housing. The belt habitually jump the guides and would start burning. I got to the point when I could tell it wasn't working right, I'd loosen the auger and drive units apart enough to slip the belt back into the guides, and start up again. One bad winter I reset the belt several times and had to replaced the broken/worn out belt twice. The winter after my wife let her son-in-law "borrow" it and I never saw it again (He did apologize for "breaking" it, I told him it was broke by the time I got it. I was grateful to not have to try to get it running again.)

I remember a small engine shop where I used to live 20 years ago have a sign that said $60 an hour if you haven't worked on it $100 an hour if you tried to fix it. Or something like that. Man you hit the nail on the head when you said people lie because they do. I often say I don't believe what the people say about the machine because they always hide information

Literally have one of these engines in my shop, have to pull everything apart just to work on them! The lawnmower detective part is right on, great idea for a skit there, bring in a "customer" sit him down, then bring out the spot light and interrogate him like the old school detective movies lol who worked on this thing?! Who adjusted the valves??? The more you cooperate, the easier it'll be haha cya next week!

I understand about customer's lying, giving very little information etc. I work at a new car dealership. I fixed this jerks defroster that required dash removal. He came back a hour after picking it up saying the blower was making noise and it wasn't before. I never touched it, and it was making that noise before. I guess he wanted something for free after paying for 12 hrs of labor he didn't get it.

Don't forget the engineers other motivation... to make things so hard to repair the owner would rather buy a new one vs pay the labor to fix their engineering disaster. Great video taryl. thank you.

I met a guy once that told me he's a designer. I asked him what he designs and he told me "pretty much anything". I asked him if he could design a car. He said "oh yeah, I could do that". He had a program that he uses to design and designs out of his dining room. That's what we're dealing with now. CAD programs and people who've never worked on the stuff they're designing. End results-plastic piles of crap.

Taryl, I don’t think that most cheap equipment is designed to be disassembled for maintenance and repair. You are amazingly patient.

This was Taryl's best video ever, when that blower started up I actually started cheering like he did. I loved his insight on design flaws and the pitfalls it causes when repairs are needed. The sad part of watching this is that's pretty much the same snowblower I own. Oh, no. I think that snow shovel sales skyrocketed after viewing this video.

Yup, I used to work on aircraft. They put a part in the wing and put the wing skin on when the build it. Then they make a better part and say to change out the old one but now you have to do it through a little access hole. Its like building a ship in a bottle.

The sound effects make these videos so entertaining, I have no idea why. I’ll never own one of these POS blower’s because it wouldn’t last 1/2 a winter with the amount of snow I have to remove where I live. But now I know how to install a carb on one.

I'm the neighborhood lawn mower small engine guy,, have been for 40 years,, and one of my neighbors brought down a pressure washer with an engine very similar that had bad gas and I took a look at that tightly packed carburetor arrangement all those knobs and that plastic and I said NO SIR... lol

Good to hear the truth about this crap of poorly made stuff. A waste of resources in the long run, there should be a law against making things designed to last short time. I want good quality machinery easy to repair and cheap spare parts easy to get.

Customers should never lie. The repairman asks the questions to aid in the repair, not to embarrass you.

Yeah, I got an old, old, MTD with a tecumseh snow king on it. They've gone down hill. Mine has been amazing except for for a non adjustable carb which I swapped for an adjustable one. Starts on the second pull. It's moved decades of MN snow.

There’s a lot to be learned from this video in many regards. I noticed from previous visits that some of the power equipment that Tractor Supply Company now sells has pretty much the same exact engines as what the “Crapsman” snowblower had. When I see the new stuff with those engines, I walk on by unless they have it marked down considerably. The Harbor Freight Predator engines are much better in quality and in price for the dollar. I have known people who would get fighting mad over their Craftsman products when it was mentioned to them that Craftsman was only a rebranding name for products made by some other manufacturer. Craftsman was always very notorious about changing up the specifications of their stuff where you would have to buy parts only from them. The same people who always defended their Craftsman equipment seemed to always really cry the blues when they had to pay the very expensive service charges that Sears charged to service that stuff.

The Harder you hit that machine the better it runs. I love watching this guy. He Kills

You install the choke knob first, then the throttle knob and gently tap both in all the way in FLUSH. THEN YOU TIGHTEN THE CARB MOUNT. This will help self center the limit tab and choke shaft ferrule on the knob. The knob will bind otherwise. BTW, these engines have real ball bearing supported crankshafts!

I’ve never had an issue with these clone engines. They’re very easy to work on. We always referred to MTD as Made To Destruct or Many Technical Difficulties.

I actually like MTD made products. They’re decent enough for most homeowners and I haven’t had any big issues with them. They’re parts network is huge so that’s a plus in my opinion.

When you started to pull out the toys it reminded me when my grandson helped me with my rider. He put pebbles down into the oil. I was fortunate that I saw the oil dip stick loose before I started it. Had him watch as I torn down the engine & rebuild. Then I had to hide my wrenches. LOL Stay safe, Joe Z

This is how things go for me, or maybe it just seems that way. Garbage that is designed to be put together just one time, with practically no thought to the next guy, is the bane of wrenchers everywhere. Turns out you are human Taryl. I just got a 1994 MTD/Tecumseh 8/24 for $25. Seemingly also sold as Craftsman and Cub Cadet. Fixed a few things on it and now I'm looking forward to a nice deep snow.

can totally relate to that, sometimes it feels like half of my time as a mechanic is fixing other peoples mistakes, had one come in where a timing belt was off by 2 teeth and it was put back together so poorly.. oh.. by the way i fixed the problem with the a/c, they forgot to plug the connector back together lol

It's good to see that you are actually "normal", first time i've seen you frustated working on a piece of equipment. I'm glad i'm not alone.

I'm a total amateur but worked on a friend's Bolens, with a Powermore engine, from Lowes, that practically took dismantling the entire snowblower, just to access one of the five bolts holding the cover over the carburetor. Took me all weekend. (the belt cover was blocking the bolt and had to remove the blower chute and right wheel to get the belt cover off!) Another friend's 1990s Craftsman, with a Tecumseh engine, and everything in about the same place but only had two screws, right there facing me, and I had it running within a half an hour. Both just need a carb cleaning.

Working behind other technicians is the hardest part of my job, so I know exactly how you feel Taryl.... love your videos

Taryl, I completely feel your pain. I have been an auto mechanic for over 25 years. The new cars are all absolute shit. I swear they are all manufactured by Hasbro or Mattel with all their plastics and computers networked to run windows, raidos, engines, transmissions. One thing is certain...no matter which brand you own..they are all plastic overpriced junk that breaks.

I’ve worked on a bigger newer craftsman/mtd. Just to remove the carburetor was such an annoying task. That thing was designed to be assembled and never taken apart again.

I had a mid-90's MTD model 640F snowblower with an 8hp Tecumseh Sno King engine, was not a bad machine, required some maintenance but overall pretty good. Seems like their quality has taken a dive, I heard they eat shear pins as well. Excellent explanation on how these companies build to a price point 👍🏽

The best one I ever had was- One of my neighbors interrupted my BBQ. Telling me he just replaced the plugs and the air filter. NOW! It won't run. I walked over to his lawnmower. I immediately told him there's the problem and started to walk away. He said WHAT! I said you have to talk the plastic off the air cleaner before you install it. I went back to my BBQ

As cheaply made as these forward only little mtd snow blowers are, they are actually really decent machines and perfect to have on hand as a backup or for doing narrow walkways and paths. You can pick them up for next to nothing, even free.

But with the combination of multiple problems (the lies, denials, crappy design, junky materials, TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PREVIOUS CLOWNS DID!!!....my head begins to steam!)...I'm amazed that you didn't put it out of its misery. One 12g slug! And told the customer, "Sorry I couldn't fix it. " MTD: Misery-Tribulations-Dysfunction...

I got a 2 month old Craftsman self-propelled mower with a 150cc OHV briggs motor on it last year, and the guy I got it from threw it out after he couldn't get it running, I tried telling him online that it probably had bad fuel in it, and for some reason he had, changed the spark plug, changed the oil, sprayed a wd-40 like substance in the carb and it got everywhere, I guess he thought that was enough to clean the carb. When I got it oil was leaking from the valve cover, I dumped the fuel out and it was mostly water in the fuel system, then I took the carb apart and blew all the jets out with carb cleaner, but it still wouldn't run. Then I thought to check under the disturbed valve cover and when I was watching the valves trying to find TDC and position them to some point on the power stroke after the compression release to check the valve lash since it was back firing, I noticed that one of the push rods was bent, apparently this guy thought it was a good idea to tighten the rocker down when it wouldn't run and it put so much negative lash on the intake rocker that the push rod had no choice but to bend. So after a new push rod, a new head gasket (I took the head off to inspect to make sure the valves were free and not bent,) and a new blade (they must've mowed gravel with the original) I had a pretty much new mower for about $40 in parts.
