The first time I found this series, I thought " what a bunch of nit-wit hillbillies". I quickly realized this is some of the best common-sense, nuts & bolts logic on the internet. Tremendously educational as well as humorous and entertaining. I've seen every video and learned something from each of them. Thank you Guys!

Obviously some of you didn’t pay close attention to the vidya, the reason I didn’t drill the head was because I used a “piloted tap”. I explain in the video that the piloted part of the tap opens the hole up to the size of the insert. No need for drilling. That’s what a piloted tap is. As far as using loctite on the insert, if you wanna use loctite go ahead. The video is just to show you how to install the heli coil. Once it’s in there it’s not gonna come out. Now theres yur dinner on that!

Taps and dyes have saved me countless times over.... I even use them in most of my woodworking hobby, which is my passion (besides repairing my John Deere 185)...Especially in jig systems.... So Taryl and Taryl's loyal viewers.......Here's a woodworking tip that not a lot of people know...... Don't use metal taps and dyes in wood...You gain far more extra strength by taking what ever size bolt you want to use in your wood project, and make it your actual tap.... Easy to do- Just use a grinder and a vice, or a bench grinder and a guide, and flatten the surface of two sides of the bolt- Even one side will do it.. Cut the head off, and install it in a drill..... Drill slowly, and back off periodically to rid the wood chips... You will be amazed how well this works.... Put a little boiled linseed oil in as you do it, and it will last a long time... If you use the Boeing aircraft T-9 Lube , it will last forever, as the coating dries on like a wax. And it works over and over again... That is the beauty of taps in wood.... Now there's your dinner!

I once stripped a bolt hole while putting a brake caliper on my car. First thing I did was call the dealer to see how much the a replacement part would be. He was one of the honest ones and right away told me about Heli-Coils. I thought that was really nice because to replace the part that I had stripped the threads in one bolt hole on would have been somewhere around $300. I have never done any sort of thread repairs in my life at that point but it was easy as long as I take my time and look at the instructions. Do note that a Heli-Coil will not appear to have the same threads as your bolt but it is flexible enough to work. I think they designed them that way intentionally so they don't come out of the bolt hole every time like that one insert kit which Taryl said he doesn't like. Heli-Coils resemble springs in a way.

Hi Taryl. Ive used heli-coils many times. Usually on aluminum engines. Snowmobiles, motorcycles, small engines. I like the individual kits. Nice video. Rev.

I was working for an International Harvester dealer, fixing farm tractors. We got a call for fixing an earth mover at a construction site. I went out and found a stripped out bolt on a hydraulic valve. I installed a heli coil in the valve and got it fixed. Our shop charged 60 dollars an hour. The regular folks that fix those, is sixty miles away, and they charged 120 dollars an hour, including travel time. They made the right decision to call us.

Excellent video Tayrl,I've used the heli-coil kits more then a few times and I found nothing works better.

I made a little adaptor tube for my shop vac that goes through the plug hole and is flexible enough to bend round the cylinder bore. it usually get all the chips out without issue.

one of my first jobs when i was 18 back in 76 was making these . helicoil was founded in bethel connecticutt, i use to do second shift after aprint shop job and run 4 of these machines that spit these out by the thousands , and they had to be done right theres your dinner

Hey taryl, Use Loctite 266 on the solid style inserts. 266 will take the heat. Use this on the Ford Triton engines. Great vid as always!

Good tip about using grease and q tip. I might try using s shop vac too

Yet another excellent educational video Taryl. Have you ever worked on any diesel engines ? I'm looking for a good engine to start a project but I don't have enough experience to know which manufacture (s) made good quality durable , reliable and parts avaliable . I need an engine that puts out 8~13 hp, or more up to 20 hp but I will start at the lower end ,but in the teens is my target sweet spot . If you have serviced such an engine in the past ,could you share which episode ? Thank you Taryl for you being you and all your friends who help you make the show what it is .May God bless you sir .

Not just for striped out threads, heli-coils are used in some OEM threaded equipment, aviation comes to mind.

I've used heli-coils on many things but Holley carb bowl screws would often strip out and heli-coils were great for that.

taryl try some lock tight. I've done it for years on big diesel truck motors. never a problem. my heil coil kit came with a plastic tee insert tool that puts them in as well as brakes the tab but then I bought the kit in the late 90s

Thoughts on Loctite Form-A-Thread Stripped Thread Repair? I actually just used it on my aluminium block for one of the blower housing bolts that go into the block. Worked really well.

We used to always put "case savers" in Volkswagen engine case halves. Keeps the head studs from pulling out.

I laugh at every video, thanks for posting them! I'm wondering about putting in an insert. It seems like there is debate about weather to use grease or not, and using RTV or red lock-tight. I read for motorcycle engines to not use grease as it may cause a chip to stick in the valves or somewhere in there if grease goes into the motor. I went with the insert because it seemed like it would be a little better for the motor I'm working on. Respond when you can and thanks for all the great information and entertainment!

Taryl will you be able to make a video of how to read bolt sizes and how do we if both valves are closed? Honestly I find your videos to be very informative and I thank you for posting them.

Rule of thumb on thread depth is twice the diameter of the fastener on aluminum and the diameter of the fastener on steel. I always do a little more.

A nice t-handle Tap wrench helps can be ratchet type you get the drive on the tap evenly keeping it straight
