My Dad mowed the yard up until 1969 and 1970 during this period he taught me how to fix the old 3 and a half horse power Briggs and Stratton 22 inch push mower. Like hammering the shaft back straight and replacing the key after I hit something. By 1970 I was 11 years old and was given the yard mowing forever ! LOL ! Love all your vids Taryl very humorous ,entertaining and educational.

I found a perfect like new engine on a power washer and tried using it on my mower. It worked great except not only when I hit something did it get the timing all screwed up because it had the pointless lgnition, but I found the shaft to bend at the drop of a hat because it was not made as strong as lawn mower crankshaft .

Once again another great video. I'm definitely going to order those sleeves. I really could not justify buying that jig that you used. In the last 15 years I've only had one bent crankshaft and that was one my own mower. The mower was about a month and a half old when my wife did not listen and went out into the yard and tried to mow over top of their decorative rocks that made a pass to the garage. 2 weeks before she bent the shaft she took out the lawn mower blade. And two weeks later she took out the motor. Fortunately I had a good used motor on someone's mower deck that could not be saved. So I have a lawn mower with a brand new body with a 20-year old motor. Like always I enjoyed your video.

@newsnowriversidesgtrock4 жыл бұрын
In truth the device does not "straighten cranks", is straightens the output shaft of the engine. Yes the output shaft is physically connected as an extension of the crankshaft, however, the output shaft is an extension listed separately on most parts breakdown lists. Most engines, with the exception of the small engine such as we are discussing, do not have an output shaft, but rather usually have an output flange of some type.

SOME PEOPLE CRINGE ON THAT,BUT LIKE A LOT OF THINGS I'VE SEEN YOU DO I'VE DONE AS WELL SINCE I WAS AROUND 12 YEARS OLD! AS YOU STATE A LOT OF TIMES,, IT'S NOT THE SPACE SHUTTLE!! things on small engines are not that CRITICAL!! I'm glad you're doing these videos! MANY OF TIMES I'VE USED A DRILL AND A FILE TO TRUE UP A VALVE, I'VE ALSO USED THE SANDPAPER TRICK ON THE SEATS, a lot of the bolts and such DOESN'T HAVE TO BE "TORQUED" yes the head bolts,yes the rod bolts,but some of the other bolts just snugged up,does just fine!!

Picked up a free mower to get it running. Cleaned carbs and changed gas and oil and it fired up but vibrated violently. I learned in this vid how to check the crank and how to straighten it. I banged so hard with the sledge that it tore out the motor mounts. Gave me a good reason to buy a welder and I welded new steel to the deck and made new solid mounts. After a little spray paint I now have a pretty sweet mower! You guys rock!

Ok a few things.. 1. when you use the sledge hammer be sure to lay the mower on the side that has the thickest metal on the bottom part that holds the bearing UP. IN the new mowers they got cheap on the aluminum and made it thinner and broke the lower section which caused me to have to remove and find and remove and replace with used one. 2. I use a metal rod or even a mower blade with a clamp to the outer rim of the mower and adjust the space to the shaft (instead of the magnet fussing every time) so far I've simply left the blade on and wacked that instead of the shaft directly but I really like the sleeve better. 3. You can get it perfect, just keep wacking with the right force to bring it in line. 4. And this is more opinion than researched and confirmed but the shaft is part and parcel to the inner rotating crank and if you only bend it at the bolt the inside bend will be improper. not saying it is not a good design or a good idea but by moving the fulcrum away from the original fulcrum of the bent (the bearing) you change the bow on the rest of the shaft IMO. So for me I would not use it or have it as a back up. In fact you could check my assertion by measuring the distance before and after you straighten. If the gap is less then I am right. If not then delay the last. But GET THAT SHAFT PERFECTLY STRAIGHT!!! YOU CAN DO IT .. else you will get uneven cutting and the vibration will wear the bearing on both ends. Great funny stuff guys.. thanks hope this helps. Think I will weld me up one of them thar straighteners for myself... Blessings

Hey, Taryl, My neighbor bent the crankshaft on his brand new Honda GVC160 lawn mower and when he started it ,it jitterbugged all over the driveway. Well, he took it in to a local repairman and for $50 he re- balanced the blade to compensate for the bent crankshaft and it runs like it did the day he brought it home! Smooth as silk! He also says that it will no longer stress the bearings but when a new blade is needed it will have to be re-balanced. Ever heard of this? It sure beats a $450 new crankshaft installation.

Good stuff Taryl thats a fancy little jig you got there. I usually just bash the shaft and grind the mushroom down after its not that bad. Iv been using a lead hammer to get the flywheels off it works great no damage but I think the softness takes away some of the shock so it takes some harder hits. Intresting about the plug holders I didnt know that. I heard having them ungrounded when you turn it over damages the coil I guess thats why they put it there.

@Steelman03555 жыл бұрын
Forty years ago we used to straighten shafts on lawnmowers with that same machine. Most engine manufactures warned us then against this practice. Metallurgic experts say that the shaft could be weakened and can break just like you referred too in your video when you warned about not standing in front of it when applying pressure. Imagine that thing breaking off at 3600 RPM. Today's shafts are even cheaper made that 40 years ago and that's even scarier. Now with aftermarket parts prices, its safer to change the shaft. In my shop I would never take on the liability risk of straightening a bent shaft. You don't have to remove the piston or rings to do that job. If you have to remove the flywheel to change the key anyway, then all you have to do is remove the base plate to replace the shaft. Flywheel removal that you used is standard practice. Only I use a dead blow hammer or brass hammer, but really just whatever hammer is closest.
@brokenotdead95875 жыл бұрын
I actually put that theory to the test with 25 newer engines and 25 older ones. I kept bending and straightening them trying to weaken the metal enough to break and never got a single 1 to break. Running them at max throttle. I'll have to redo test and post a video of it.

Hey Taryl, I grew up on a farm near North Judson?? Know where that is?? I used to occasionally go through your town. Not as big as NJ, well maybe, but we only have one flashing stop light. Someone gave me an almost new Snapper mower with a bent crankshaft. After I watched this video extravaganza, I told myself, if Taryl can fix it, I can!! Well, maybe. I tried the beat the crap out of it method; and, that did not work. Sooo...... I made my very own crankshaft straightening machine. With the help of your $300 machine as inspiration, voila', or as they say down south, walla, it worked. All you need is a piece of 3/8" 6x6 angle iron, some 5/8" grade 8 bolts , a chop saw and a welder. Next time I am in the area, look out!!!

I learn so much from you. I have a question about a 009 stihl. I replaced my coil and small chip module. I have no spark. I unplug the ignition module I get spark. Was my module bad ? I ordered it on line from a stihl dealer. Not sure how to check it. Maybe you can make a video or maybe I should throw it away and buy new saw.

How do you handle it when the slot in the end of the crankshaft , where the key goes, is damaged?

The bolt that does the straightening should be further out on the end of the crankshaft end IMO. And the lower bolt should be as close to the oil seal as possible to support the crank close to the case while bending. That's a nice tool, I prefer it over beating on the crank with a hammer as that has to hurt the aluminum journal in the crank housing itself... Obviously the best way is to remove the crank and fix it in a press on some V - blocks with a dial indicator....
