The Lost Levels is a remake of the game released in Japan as Super Mario Bros 2 ( tasvideos.org/1882M ). It introduces a number of new obstacles into the standard Super Mario Bros. formula, including poisonous mushrooms, wind, reverse warp zones, and of course many tricky jumps. It's difficult enough that Nintendo of America decided to completely re-theme a different game and release that as Super Mario Bros. 2 ( tasvideos.org/1724M ) instead; The Lost Levels is the first time the Japanese sequel was released to the rest of the world.
This movie saves 164 frames over previous publication ( tasvideos.org/2296M ). All levels are played, including the secret world 9, and the extremely difficult A through D worlds.

Most TAS's tend to be pretty pacifist. This one is great showing Mario as a whirlwind of fiery death. I actually found that even more impressive.

Since this is an American game, and since Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels was only released on the Famicom Disk System, only SMB: TLL is Japan, and the rest is American.

@Aber nicht im ernst? Not really because you can do that on the american version of smb1,wich is the exact same (except it's for the levels,graphics and that it's for the nes) In fact,all the glitches and bugs can actually be done in smb1 (if whoever is making the tas wants to do them)

@@AlguienMas well, the person whose made this TAS, Happylee, has done quite a few TASes of the original NES version of Super Mario Bros. I believe he only used this version instead of the famicom one because in the original you had to beat the game four times to reach the last world or so.

Funny how this joke has been commented on practically any TAS for seven years now. You’d think that’d be enough time for someone to have heard it once, found it funny, and move on, but rather, the comment section has to continually comment the same things over and over again, for seven years, not realizing that just because you said it more times, doesn’t make it more funny, and if anything, makes it more annoying.

How is it phasing through firebars and stuff? Is it the crouch glitch that modifies the hitbox or something?

I think it has to do with screen position. Mario's position on the screen is a few pixels ahead of his actual hitbox, which remains static. That would be my guess.

Firebars only move in jumps every few frames, so with good positioning, you can go right through them.

If you are remaking it, you can make it a 16-bit value rather than an 8-bit value. Or cue off of the level and world in addition to the x-coordinate.

the one thing that is disappointing that doesn't work is the bullet bill glitch and that same type of flagpole glitch where mario doesn't have to walk to the castle. if that was in here, it would save many seconds.

@ZCS, yeah, a few weeks ago I watched Bismuth on KZfaq and he explains how Mario can go through the firebars. Especially underwater: if Mario chrouches before leaving the ground underwater, his hitbox will start shrinking, making Mario look like his head goes through the firebars! Thanks anyways!

sprite glitch when you press left+right at the same time underwater, and left+right helps you accelerate faster underwater.

It's a good thing the scoring time at the end of each level isn't much slower. Otherwise TASs would involve a whole lot of standing around.

The fire wheels have some pretty inaccurate hitboxes.

it's not exactly because of hitboxes, it is because if you look at it frame by frame, you'll see at no point is mario in the hitbox of the firebar. he is abusing the non-fluid motion of the firebar to go through when the firebar goes to its next state.

It’s a TAS. Also for Bowser’s fire, the hitbox is only a couple pixels at the front. For firebars, the collision detection is really janky.

I think pressing left+right causes the fireball angle to be different.

when he shoots facing right he is moving in the same direction as the fireball so the speed of the fireball relative to him is slower but the vertical displacement is the same so it looks like he is shooting lower. when he shoots facing left he is moving in the opposite direction of the fireball speed of fireball relative to him is faster and the vertical displacement is the same so it looks like he shoots higher. if you stand still and shoot in both directions then it will look like the same height. i really hope that's correct

It's the katakana for "Arigatou" which means "Thank you" in Japanese.

Yes, but you only should be able to do that in an emulator. If you're doing it on console, your controller must be broken.
