This is a rough mix of a song called 'I love My Baby' from We Happy Few's 3rd album. I produced the video so people can get an idea of what you can do on a Tascam 688 analog cassette portastudio. The first run through has all the tracks playing constantly, and the 2nd run through demonstrates the individual tracks being soled. The album is now finished and on sale here -

Cheers Feter, glad you like it - it's a simple tune but goes down well at gigs and gets the crowd moving!

Hell yeah, I have a 688. I thought about selling it or keeping it for submixing drums or whatever. Your video sold me on keeping it. I have ran everything I ever recorded on it out to a DAW through an M-Audio Profire 2626. Some of the songs on my YT originated there, check them out. Thanks for sharing.

I love these, I chose a 488 over 688 cause it was cheaper, had phantom power and I didn't need to record all 8 tracks at once. Love the music, and always interested to see cassette multitracks in action! Thanks!

I think the BK box were if I remember right, and the instruments and main vox were straight to tape. Surprisingly I found it didn't make a much audible difference if there was one a/d converting or three stages. a/d - performance to computer, d/a - computer recording to tape, a/d final mix back to computer for mastering. The main difference was having the tape stage in their, which smoothed out the sharp bits and glued the sound together.

Yeah 688's sound great as long as they are working properly! It's easy to dump to a DAW if you've got an 8 input interface, but tricky without. You'd have to chop the audio up every now and then to re-sync manually if you transfer it in a couple of takes. A cassette tape won't playback exactly the same twice. You need to make sure the 688 is on the mix down setting when you connect the tape outputs to the inputs of an audio interface. I left it on the record setting once which broke the machine.

What broke?
@wehappyfewmusic
@wehappyfewmusic 4 жыл бұрын
@Josh Swann I'm not sure which internal components broke, but it smoked a bit and wouldn't power up after the feedback loop. I got it repaired by professionals, as it was way beyond my technical knowledge.

What about the vocals? See my question for asking is I'm curious if recording your tracks first on the 688 then dumping them into a daw makes more of a difference then first recording your tracks on the daw then dumping to the 688. My theory is that it would be a better idea to record your tracks first on to the 688 then dump into the daw. It would be less a/d d/a converting.

Did you first record the tracks into garage band and then record them into the 688 like you did in your previous video or did you record directly into the 688?

WOW Man! Does this really sound as good as i think it sounds(from this video)? I'm looking for an analog multitrack to get that warmth and natural compression from a tape.... found one of these units from $100, I'm almost hitting "buy" here. How hard is to dump it to a DAW afterwords, how would you sync the tracks if you don't have an 8 input interface?
@straighteight9154
@straighteight9154 5 жыл бұрын
print a sound across all 8 tracks, at the start and at the end.Something like a very short square pulse off a synth as short as possible (essentially a click), then record each track 2 at a time as a stereo pair, split them to mono, then using the zoom in your daw find a common transient in the wav form of the noise you created at the start and trim them all at the same place. Make sure the one at the end lines up also, sometimes there will be slight discrepancies in playback times (belt wear etc.) so trim the end click to the same place then time stretch the tracks if required. A horrible boring laborious process which shouldn't be attempted for more than 8 tracks (to keep your sanity!)

Sorry I missed this at the time, and I guess you worked it out. For anyone else though it helps if you put the 688 into one of the mix down presets. There’s some more details in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j9WReNxqmJ3Kln0.html

What I'm mostly surprised is by not hearing a lot of hiss if any at all?
@wehappyfewmusic
@wehappyfewmusic 4 ай бұрын
Yeah, the combination of double standard tape speed and DBX noise reduction really helps limit the hiss on this unit.

@wehappyfewmusic

Hi sounds like you might be in overdub or recording mode. Try using preset 12 as this will put the 688 into a mixing scene, and give you full access to the mixer channels.

hi, quick question: which are you supposed to use as main output for mixing down/mastering or just to properly record. 1-RCA (LR)monitor out, 2- 1/4” (LR)DUAL OUT, 3- 1/4” (LR)aux out or 4- the TAPE OUT 8individual RCA channels? thanks so much i hope is not too much ask

So are all eight tracks being multitracked onto one cassette tape?
@wehappyfewmusic
@wehappyfewmusic 9 жыл бұрын
Yes that's right.
@adesyndicate
@adesyndicate 9 жыл бұрын
wehappyfewmusic A regular cassette tape? Wouldn't that sound bad since so much information is being squished onto such a small tape? I'm asking because I heard that mulitracking onto a 1/2 inch reel-to-reel with four tracks would sound bad and this is 8 tracks to a tape even thinner than that.
@wehappyfewmusic
@wehappyfewmusic 9 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean, but the 688 heads must be pretty clever as it still sounds good.

The way cassettes work is they have 4 tracks but you can have as many channels you want. Channels are just inputs on a mixer and you can mix those down into a stereo channel. Where you are limited to 4 tracks.
