Super pro tip: Buy dried rosemary, most generic brands are cheap. This will give you an extra few bucks back into your budget. It's nice to have fresh herbs, but when you are strapped for cash and want flavor in your dishes then dried is the way to go 😉
@viviannichols3582
@viviannichols3582 4 жыл бұрын
I think dried is a better option if you’re only cooking a portion or two at a time since it lasts so much longer. I get fresh rosemary for Thanksgiving, cooking for a large group, but when it’s just me, I go with the dried.

Some good things to remember is that the less packaged/processed something is the cheaper it is, block cheese is cheaper than sliced or shredded. Also always check the sign for the price per unit, two products might have a similar price but one might be a better deal because you're getting a little more product for the same price. And keep a calculator handy so you can keep a running total and don't go over budget.

Another great tip is if you're starting out, take 5 bucks out of every week's food budget to either buy a bulk spice or a thrift store cook piece. Within a year you'll have a stocked pantry.

@@lukedodson3267 I take a photo of my shopping list with my phone and then I open the calculator app and keep a running total - I also shop at Aldi's and get about three times more food for my dollar, their prices are amazing. If you've never been to an Aldi's, check it out. You won't recognize any of the brands but I promise you almost everything is as good or even better. Aldi's and Trader Joe's are from the same family, so there's a lot of organic, vegan, non GMO, Fair Trade, etc. kinds of foods and much cheaper than even Walmart. You should also check out what Aldi regulars call the Aisle of Shame (AOS) where they have all kinds of tempting items for much less than large stores. If you're struggling, you need to shop at Aldi's -- bring a quarter for the shopping cart (you get it back) and your own bags. They take debit and credit cards (and cash) but not checks, and no coupons coz everything's so inexpensive.
@viviannichols3582
@viviannichols3582 4 жыл бұрын
Always start by taking inventory of what you already have. Decide on meals based on what you need to use up first. The best way to save money is to use what you have and not throw anything out! Next, look at weekly sales. Items on the cover of the store flyer are usually the cheapest: in-season produce, for example. So if you’re doing, say, a stir-fry, choose your vegetables based on what’s on sale. I use coupons, but you don’t have to. Just keep an eye on it as an option. If you can make something you were already going to buy cheaper with a coupon, go for it! Keep an eye on the clearance section too. Sometimes you can find great deals. (But make sure you’re familiar with what a good price is before buying something just because it’s “on clearance.”) Use a calculator to stay on budget. When you can afford to, stock up on things like spices. Don’t rely on using meat in every meal. Other options like beans are a lot cheaper. A bag of rice goes a long way and is so much cheaper by the pound than a box with a seasoning packet. I season plain rice with cumin and oregano. I hope these tips are helpful!

Yeahhhhh you read our comments, that's such a cool episode ! Honestly, this is my favorite show on the internet right now. Also extra tip when prepping something hot, wait for it to be cooled before you store it in the fridge, it saves energy and avoids unwanted moisture inside the containers.
@Magnesium02
@Magnesium02 5 жыл бұрын
No. Room temp is the time bacteria is most active. Letting your food sit out to cool down only increases the time for bad bacteria to multiply within your food. Back in the olden days putting hot food in the fridge was bad as it would lower the temp of the fridge and put all your food at risk of being at the wrong temp. However modern fridges are much better at temperature regulation and are designed to chill food quickly, so it is much better to simply package foods into smaller containers so they chill faster and refrigerate immediately.

My kids would never eat raw kale... but can always toss it in the oven before the baguette slices and make kale chips! :) Thank you for the meal prep ideas for this tired mommy.

AND if you are SINGLE you get LEFTOVERS that you can bring to work or school the next day for lunch. Heck, you could eat the Fritatta for breakfast OR lunch. This is BRILLIANT, and Frankie you made me laugh out loud....The Struggle Is Real!

Adorable watching you lose your mind moment to moment as you cook. Makes me want to shout "Get to the chopper!" with my worst Arnold impression.

Don't cut onions days before actually using them as they get a bitter taste by reacting with oxygen. Better prepare them just in time.
