Poor Governor Swann! First he is told his daughter is dead. Then he is told she's not dead. And all the while he can't trust either of the men talking to him. Cut it out, you two maggots. Stop torturing this poor man for goodness' sake! His only friend here is Norrington.

If not for Norrington, Swann would have absolutely been screwed. Imagine that: Governor Swann becomes captain of the Dutchman, then learns the hard way finding out his daughter is still alive. But now, all of that could have been to its greatest advantage too: Governor Swann kills Jones for lying to him and destroys and kills Beckett's reputation for deliberately playing head games him.

Bill Nighy's acting is amazing. You can see how much he must over act to get the intended emotions through all the CGI, and he's doing it brilliantly. The prequel would be a trilogy that spans over 100 years and involve Jack Sparrows dad, the pirate lords and eventually Johnny Depp as Jack in the third film. They would be PotC the heart of the ocean, PotC the cruelty of the sea and PotC god's and monsters. Yup, I have thought too much about this lol!

"Cruel" is the perfect word to describe what they just did to Elizabeth's poor father. First telling him that she was dead, then saying "No she's not". This scene could have stayed in. He just didn't want Elizabeth's father to suffer that fate.

Its also important to distinguish why Beckett could not afford Jones to be slain, he knew how formidable he was with the Dutchman and if anyone were to break his command (like we saw Will do at the end) Beckett could not effectively eliminate piracy as he was doing in the movie.

@@SirMarshalHaig It’s likely something having to do with the curse. Jones cut out his heart to try and rip out his ability to feel love, which clearly didn’t work, and thus when he put the curse on the heart he may have wanted the person who kills him to share the same fate of lovelessness.

@@TheOneWhoReportsForDuty I think "why" in this case was more like "what rule says it must be so". I respect James Norrington's character and is otherwise very pleased at the way they drew his character in the next two films i.e DMC and AWE. It is imperative to note that he is traditionally a British elite navy man and that requires his stereotypes. And it was welly executed in his interactions with the other characters. And the best part is that the makers retained his goodness of heart throughout the series proving that even though misguided he is a good man. And that I'd what makes it so realistic to have a character like that in the films. It is also sad to see that he died in the end, because he refused to choose the path of piracy and his obvious stubborn ambition drove him to trust the wrong people. Atleast before his death he realized the correct distinction between right and wrong and that often law discriminates between them favoring the unjust over what is justified. So yes, that is pretty much why I love Pirates Of The Carribean, even though it's been almost 20 years since it's release.

It's interesting that Norrington is one of the very few lawful good characters in this franchise. Most of them are lawful evil (like Davy Jones, Beckett and Barbossa) or chaotic neutral (like Jack, Will and Elizabeth). It's tragic that the world of PotC is too cruel for a lawful good character like Norrington, where those who upheld the law and those who break the law are practically the same type of people who, at the end of the day, are simply concerned on their own personal interests.

There are so many deleted scenes within At World's End that, in an ideal world, would have been kept in, but their omission makes sense. The story of Jack and his previous dealings with Beckett would do much to make Jack out to be more of a hero and explains the bargain he made with Jones, but it shows that Jack has a moral compass; it would benefit the ending and the character to purposefully keep the audience unknowing of his ambitions, because then the scene where he wilfully surrenders immortality, even when it lies in the palm of his hand, to save his friend, feels more poignant, as we, the audience, won't know ahead of the moment whether he would do the right thing in the end. This scene also makes sense removing. Governor Swan being kept in the dark of the whereabouts of his daughter and the next time we see him is when he is a spirit makes the news of his death more heart wrenching as not only do we not know it was coming, thinking he of all people would be safe, but it means that when Norrington learns the truth it has more impact as well, as it becomes clear that even the most prestigious men within Beckett's ranks are still unaware of what goes on. Plus, we learn of what happens to those who destroy the heart in a later scene, it isn't worth reiterating. Whilst seeing how far he would go for his daughter makes us endear to him, we saw that already in the previous film, where he is prepared to give up all his titles and authority to Beckett to ensure her safety.

He didn't want to be "freed" (die) because near the end of the movie, when Jack offers to stab his heart to free him, Jones says "My freedom was forfeit long ago". Mu favorite part of this is that he uses a irish scottish term for a curse, a geas, which is a curse that bends the very laws of the natural world to ensure it is carried out. Amazing research on the side of the writers. Absolutely amazing. As an Irish pagan i must applaud for the depth of the script here.

I noticed that the two standing closest to Jones are Maccus and Penrod. Supplementary materials say they are two of his most trusted crewmen. The other two are Angler and Ratlin. Also standing close is Palifico, who is implied to be Jones' bodyguard. Their loyalty is clear. Look at Maccus when Beckett essentially calls *Jones* immaterial.

I would've _loved it_ if there was an Extended Edition of each Pirate movie that completed everything they cut-out. Because this scene was great...I always found it irritating that A; not only do they find out about the Heart from Governor Swan's ghost with no explanation of how he learned. But B; how retconny it felt that Jones' heart somehow became tied to the Dutchman when logically, it should be separate. So learning that Jones is not only the one who told _him_ - straight from the fish's mouth as it were - but also that Jones himself put a curse on it to bind his heart to the ship, to pass his burden onto his killer, honestly makes the movie feel more _complete._ Also, this whole project must've been a strange time for Nighy...surrounding him are a bunch of A-List Actors all dressed in full costume and make-up...meanwhile, he and his "crew" are wearing gray, skin-tight body-suits, with dots on their faces. To me, it'd feel like showing up to a fancy-dress party in my pajamas.

Why cut this scene? It actually makes the movie make sense, like when the governor dies and he's asked what happened and he rambles about Davy Jones heart (which is purely used as a way to alert the rest of the cast of those rules as they do not know yet) it makes NO SENSE, because if that caused his death he would be captaining the ship, so him tambling about that makes no dang sense until you see this scene. Like yes we knew Beckett wanted him dead from a previous scene but when the governor goes on that rant it makes his death really confusing, it also makes it confusing that he went to that ship and it was the last place he was seen alive but Norrington didn't know he was dead. WITHOUT THIS SCENE IT DOESN'T MAKE SENCE

I didn´t have a problem to understand governon Swann was killed off-screen. There was a line form Beckett: "He´s not useful for us anymore." or something like that. Than later when he´s dead in that small boat, and Elizabeth wants him to join them on the Black Pearl, he is little bit numb obviously, which is a hint about his soul becoming free of all troubles of his previous life, becoming to be in peace. He tells Elizabeth and others he learned about the chest and the heart and says something like it was such a weird reason to die, which implies he´s dead and knows it.

I love this scene and it definitely should've been in the movie, but it was well explained that Beckett had Swan killed in the movie. During that scene on Beckett's boat, Mercer asks "And what about the governor?", to which Beckett says something of the lines of "His usefulness has run its course". It's implied he'll have him killed.

Its such a damn shame that they removed this scene. It's just a perfect ironic parallel to his later demise when Elizabeth finds out he's dead. However it does make sense why they removed it because this scene is supposed to be about how Jones is brought to his knees by Beckett not about the Governor. Still, they definitely could've just shot another scene where the Governor overhears a similar conversation and they integrate the scene in there that way.

I like the scene of Davy talking to Governer about how "are you prepared for the consequences" when he tries to kill him, but not that big of a fan of the previous changes of him telling of Jones with Beckett as it just feels a bit too humiliating like they're mother and father scolding a child.
