TW: body dysmorphia
In this episode, Tay Lautner interviews her husband and co-host, actor Taylor Lautner, as the two discuss growing up in the limelight, body image, and men’s mental health. They touch on Taylor’s hiatus from the entertainment industry and explain why, at one point in time, fame felt like a drug to him; one that would be healthier to abstain from, but would be rough before it got better. All of his wife Tay's experiences with mental health struggles prior to her own were with men in her life, so it is important to both of your hosts to destigmatize and openly discuss men’s mental health. In particular, the two touch on body image battles, an issue often attributed to only women, and offer words of encouragement for the men out there struggling. Lastly, Taylor tackles the Lemon 11 segment, during which he opens up about his massive misinterpretation of “that” moment at the 2009 VMAs. When life gives you lemons, what do you do with them? Over here at The Squeeze - we talk about it.

He really set the stage for how to treat an ex when you live such a highly public life. We'll never know what went on privately, it's not our business, but BTD and Midnight Rain tell us how good his heart is. ☀️He was sunshine☀️

well he is the most humble and down to earth famous person in the world. Even if Taylor (Swift) was careless in their relationship (I'm just quoting her, don't get mad at me) he didn't hold a grudge on her.

I'm a few months late here, but I just wanted to pop in and thank Taylor for his honesty and openness about the impact being a "teen idol" had on his mental health. I remember watching the movies and wondering how you had the confidence to put so much of your body on display, and to hear you say that you thought your abs were your most valuable offering is heartbreaking. So glad you've found a partner who is so supportive of you.

Taylor’s insight on how going to a grocery store is fun or how it is going to a movie theatre after being in the spotlight is honestly my favourite example of how out of touch celebrity life is. It’s a likeable version of it, because this really mundane thing that most of us consider a chore, is something he hasn’t experienced in so long that now its almost like a wild, fun adventure to experience. It’s a great example of how the cult of celebrity in our age has spiralled out of control and taken the simple life away from people.

I am just starting to watch this on KZfaq 5 months after it started. And I have to say this is so refreshing. To see a young couple have such a healthy marriage and see the value in good communication and vulnerability with one another. The Lord can truly bless this marriage is so many ways. Thank you Taylor for being vulnerable about your experiences as an actor and shedding light to the truth of body image and mental health for men and women. It is not spoken of enough. It is nice to see someone you have only known as a celebrity show their humanity and relate to everyone as just a normal person who hurts and feels like everyone else. I think as fans we sometimes get lost in the celebrity of the person and forget they are just like us. The comments made about them hurt the same way as anyone else. I look forward to listening through the rest of these and getting caught up! Blessings to both of you!

I was married to a man with huge body image issues. It was really taxing for me to constantly reassure him that I loved him no matter how he looked and, at the same time, to receive passive-aggressive comments when my weight shifted. These mental health problems are hard for both people in the relationship.

I love this! I can relate 100%!! I've listened to both your podcasts on my way home from working at the hospital but I also wanted to come here tonight before bed see you both doing the podcast in the flesh on youtube, plus show the tube support 🙌🏼 I'm really looking forward to the future of your podcasts and the focus being mental health. One thing I will say that It’s sad when it comes to men. Men’s Mental health isn't spoken enough and I applaud you both. Especially for you Taylor because you have been a very private person for year's so to see you step out of your comfort zone and speak about your feelings and mental health is nothing short of inspiring. Tay thank you! I 100% resonate sister as I am a nurse in Australia who also faced this pandemic that can on be described as a head on collision overnight. It’s been a horrible 3years. Again I come back around to the cycle of mental health and don't get asked enough how we are doing and are always last to be addressed how we are doing and honestly, NO we aren’t. Thankyou guys! (from Australia) xx

I have teared up several times listening. Special tears 😊 it’s so amazing that you both are bringing mental health to light in such a way that anyone can relate to. My mom attempted suicide and thankfully survived only to lose her five years later. My ex boyfriend, father of my son, died of an overdose and then my father passed away last year. The past three years have been tough. But, I have also overcame those obstacles because it’s people like you who bring light to mental health. Knowing that you are not alone and can relate to anyone’s struggles is a huge factor in mental strength. Thank you both for opening up to something so personal and being so selfless to spread the word of healing through mental illness and struggles. Lemons by Tay honestly gets me through the day and from the bottom of my heart Thank you♥️

So good for people to hear about how being adored & well known can bring a massive added psychological burden to take a clear step back and adjust where you feel worth & value from. We all want to be celebrated for our work and personality, and so many kids now want fame thinking it’s the ultimate experience of love and being valued. Smart man Taylor to create his own new definition and boundaries on how he feels valued, and to articulate why it’s something that needs careful handling and a strong mind (and lots of trusted good close ones around you). Loved that this popped up on my view suggestions. Wish you both the best!

This is SO powerful! Wow. I had no idea how much I needed this podcast! Thank you! Honestly, I had never struggled with “body image” until I had a major surgery. All of a sudden, I had to adapt to having scars and embrace my new look. When I got married, I was SO happy and comfortable that I realized how uncomfortable I was beforehand. Growing up, there was a tremendous focus on how I looked, what I ate, being forced to workout, etc. I used to apologize to my husband for not being able to give him my “16 year-old body” with the new confidence that I have gained in my late 20’s…early 30’s. It took me years to realize that I am totally different person now and accept the fact that I will never look how I did in high school/college and that’s okay. This is such a good reminder! Thank you for putting out such a positive and pertinent message into the world! 🤯👏🙏♥️😎

I love how you talked about body image and the struggle with fighting the obsession that comes with exercise and diet but also went full circle on how changing your relationship with food and exercise can make it a positive part of mental health. So much of body image struggles and fitness struggles talk about embracing your body and not worry about exercise but they skip the talk about getting active and adding healthy foods to your diet can also be a huge positive on mental health! So anyway thank you ❤

This podcast is amazing. It also brought me right back! Back in 2011 I became a massive Twilight fan, and in September 2012 I had a presentation on Twilight. (Team Jacob by the way). I'm also a massive Miley fan, and back when I looked at tons of Kristen and Taylor videos I came about a compilation of videos where they talked about Miley Cyrus' the climb. Last week I started watching the Twilight movies again, and today I'm working on a big project (at university) about Twilight. Yesterday I watched the old compilation of interview that took place back in 2010, today you guys mentioned The Climb again. My childhood is complete. Podcast is awesome. I'm really glad it shed a light on men and their mental health journey, I feel like society often forgets about that and talks about women's mental health (Not that that isn't important, but gender really shouldn't be a factor)

So happy for both of you to have each other and that you're in a good place. Love that you're talking about body image issues and where to find value. Thank you for your honesty and vulnerability. I've struggled with weight my entire adult life because I rebelled against criticism when I was a size 4-6. So, I totally went through waves of getting in shape and letting everything go. Finally, trying to choose to be healthy consistently (now at size 18) because I deserve to feel good...not because of what I will look like.

This podcast was really awesome! I am a psychiatrist myself and stumbled upon this podcast while on a walk with my dogs and was pleasantly surprised. You guys sound like such a great, loving and supportive couple. Mental health is SO important and I think talking about it and being so real and grounded while discussing it is helpful in diminishing the stigma against discussing mental health in general. A few things I wanted to point out from a medical perspective- Taylor is wise and seems really well versed in mental health! I am a HUGE advocate for exercise and sometimes "prescribe" it as additional treatment for those struggling with mental health issues, and there are tons of studies to back it up. Also I think it is important to note that yes body image issues happen in both men and women, and when Taylor described as "seeing himself" as being way different than others is a real thing- body dysmorphia which is hard to overcome but it sounds like having been able to work on himself and mental health in general has been so beneficial. PS: My husband is a diehard Taylor Lautner fan and when I tell him about this podcast he is going to be so excited to see what new stuff you guys come up with. Great work!

Also let’s be clear, toxic media “journalists” are to blame for delivering a lot of emotional pain to actors and musicians. It can be so intentionally cruel in order to sell views for their own benefit. As soon as a corporation exists that refuses to treat people like human beings and like a commodity, that’s the epitome of a sick culture. Not sure how we let them get away with it, it’s genuinely the source of so much wrong! The average person at home is much kinder and more compassionate than media.

Thank you both for this. You are doing something really important by discussing body dysmorphia in teens and men. I so admire Taylor Lautner for choosing to lead with thoughtfulness, gentleness and vulnerability despite being known for physicality and athleticism, and I admire Tay Lautner for taking the mental health of men seriously and platforming his experiences to help others, whether they be men dealing with body image issues or kids being treated less than thoughtfully in Hollywood. My daughter and I saw the Twilight Saga this month for the very first time, and while we both agreed we were Team Jacob from the moment he appeared on screen, (fully clothed) we did notice how much TL was sexually objectified as a minor by the time we see him in Eclipse. He was still a kid! So I have been wondering how that felt. I can see how that would be complicated and anxiety provoking, and you would have to have a huge ego to absorb all that attention without some ambivalence. Ironically, TL gave the most natural, believable and committed performances of the three leads. He’s the one who really sold the story, with or without the physical transformation. The character’s emotional transformation was there. We would love to see him in more projects if something appealing comes his way, but it so wonderful that you both are prioritizing building a deeply joyful life with each other.

There is simply something that makes me root for this guy. His wife as well of course. But since I haven’t seen her navigating in the public eye since her teen years. I don’t know as much, have as many thoughts of what challanges she might have had. But just the thought of him that early being ”known” for and celebrated for a certain body, looks (let us be honest, more shallow traits). And now fast forward to him as a grown man that has such a humble and kind aura. And is open about what struggle it has been at times to get there. To get to a place of being a kind and whole person past the teen stardom a franchise like that can do to you as a person. Simply put. No matter what he is involved with work vise, I wish him the best. And I hope that he knows that talking this openly and candid in a forum like this. It matters to people just trying to figure their own lives out.

I remembered the times when twilight posters were in my room. I had it in my room from 2008 up to 2013… my goodness. I love Edward but my love for Jacob too is infinite… i remembered i was also hoping for a story about jacob and renesmee…. Still…. Twilight series is my favorite movies of all time… i always rewatched all of it every year…. Its crazy…Breaking Dawn 2 was the last movie i watched in cinema together with my dad before he passed. He was also my big supporter back then for my craziness in the series… he was the one who bought me books and would asked me how did the story go so that he know what to expect when he watch it in the big screen 😅 The movies had great memories with my dad thats why i will always remember it with my heart. Watching Taylor Lautner here remind me of those days. Those were the good old times… thanks for this video about sharing mental health awareness. And for bringing back my memories with my dad. And congratulations to your wedding! Taylor, you are absolutely amazing. I am so incredibly proud of the man you have become. Inspiration to so many men out there. I’m sorry you had to struggle with people being rude and nasty but as you said you have no control over others. I personally don’t understand why some people feel the need to be so mean. You are a bright light in this world. Keep shining ❤
