welcome to my Taylor Swift “In Summation” Poem Analysis 🤍
this poem is so so so important and such a beautiful and eloquent introduction to this album. after a couple weeks, a fortnight if you will, i wanted to sit down and break down this poem and what it tells us about the bigger meaning of the album as a whole. there is so much we can learn from this album, not just about taylor, but also about our own lives. this poem is the key to what Taylor really wants us to know about TTPD💌
I post new videos every week, so turn your notifications on so you don’t miss a single upload! thank you guys so much for your support! thank you for being here💜

If only the pop critics would have seen this video prior to writing their TTPD reviews, the reviews would have been so much more to the point. Without reading the summation I touched on all the topics discussed in the songs. Of course being a longtime fan of Taylor and knowing the history and all the songs, helped me understand the songs. Then we have the sound of the album (the original album of 16 songs). For me it’s definitely not Midnights 2.0. Yes, some of the songs breathe Midnights and the 1989 vault. But there is so much more to it, it’s an amalgamation of country, dream pop, synthpop, folk and indie. In a way that’s never done before. Remarkable for the most popular artist at the time. In a way the album is breaking borders and is completely not understood. It took me a couple of days to fully understand the work as a whole, but I now know that this album (for me) is the best album ever made (the original album as well as the full body of work). I really appreciate your explanation and I have nothing to add. If only English was my native language. Much love from an old man from the Netherlands. ❤

The number of people that were in denial about what the songs were about is staggering and hysterical! Everyone expected a breakup up album all about Joe and they just couldn’t understand initially that it wasn’t! This was the biggest secret about this album!

The microwave is more of a metaphore: the microwave reheats something & the matty situation was a case of rekindling the situation over and over, its full blast super hot and then cools fast "Never scratched the surface of me" - because she was shapeshifting into something that fit them or the relationship, she was never able to be fully herself in any of them She keeps referring to Joe & Matty as polar opposites, depression vs mania / slow vs fast / locked up vs showed off - but in the end its all heartbreak and in the middle of this tug of war she found her new footing

This album is so deep. It has it all- heartbreak, anger, exasperation and delusion. It has humor, acceptance and accountability. Unfortunately, all most people want is the tea. How did it end? What is the beef between two people. How can you be so down over this? When something takes you down, or leaves you wondering what went wrong, you have to reflect on it. You can’t just bounce back easily. You can fake it, but at some point you have to deal with it. When you move past it and find a new passion, it can feel like something that makes you feel young again. The critics are not getting it. Some fans are not getting it, and that’s ok. The fan may come around or they still have her other albums. I love this album. Great analysis of the poem Nena. I loved Stevie’s poem too, but she is the queen 😊

Honestly as a swiftie I think The Manuscript is like Dear Reader she’s telling a story of all the things she went through in life with every guy she dated not just one the song is also saying I’m done with that part of my life it’s not my life anymore and it’s for my fans to enjoy and relate to!! It’s an entire goodbye to her old life and relationships!! I love The Manuscript it’s so underrated already!!

Thank you so much Nina. I knew what she was talking about but without a history of the players I could only get so far. It’s so generous of you and very kind to help us new Swifties. I’m a word nerd. Even my siblings would say speak English. So frustrating when you have that gift and people don’t get you. I was a very bright kid reading and writing after a few months of kindergarten. Taylor is such a brilliant writer. 5 words in and I’ve got a perfect picture in my head. Never a need for a dictionary. Actually after I got home from elementary school, I think by 3rd grade I’d take out our world book encyclopedia and study maybe 30 minutes of those 2 huge books. I loved writing poems the most. Anyway, I’m sorry for rambling I don’t think there are many of us so thank you again!

I loved this analysis. I haven't seen much of the criticism on this album but I agree that a lot of people are entirely missing the point. It's called Tortured Poets Department, of course it's gonna be dramatic, fatalistic and slightly unhiged. I think she explored it very well, letting out a lot of her hurt in raw form even toward her own "fans" and the music industry and media in songs like But Daddy I Love Him! and Who's Afraid of Little Old Me. I also think people are putting so much effort into figuring out who which song is about and while it's pretty obvious in some verses, in others I think it's entirely beside the point because she is just talking about the fact the she had her heart broken twice in a row, in different ways, it's about losing hope for her dreams coming true, despite who was with her at the time. And although I too was surprised about the amount of realstate Matty occupies as muse, when you listen to it you realise that it wasn't in fact just a few weeks or even the fortnight established by the media, it was hinted at, promised, wondered about for years, so that's a lot of hope to be built up and then torn back down.

I really appreciated the comment about not trash talking her former boyfriends. I think each relationship serves a purpose and met a need where she was in her life. I think these men should be respected and we shouldn’t assume the worst of any of them when we don’t know there side of the story. Not to even mention nobody can really understand the dynamics of a relationship but the two people who were in it. Great video and gave me a lot to think about!

As a swiftie I also think The manuscript is like Dear Reader is telling a story of All the lives she had with every one she dated not just one person and it’s also saying goodbye to lose lives forever unless she has to sing them on Tour! And for fans to enjoy now and relate to!! It’s also very underrated The Manuscript deserves better!! I also think the Professor is a therapist Taylor has that no one knows about or it’s a friend who told her that but it’s not really a Professor that a metaphor writing what you know looking backwards can get rid a lot of trauma and heartbreak and it also can help you heal I know this for a fact because I journal!!!

Also with “wishing on comets”, a comet is a very big event doesn’t happen that often, perhaps she is noting to the fact that there is a lack of hope or a very slim probability of the relationship working out. A comet also doesn’t have a very regular orbit which could lead into the next part of stars never aligning, the chance for the relationship to work out had passed and will not come around for a while or never again. Just an idea

@@NenaShelby Plus the fact that in ancient civilizations, (and even now for some niche groups) comets are a sign or harbingers of approaching calamity. Thank you for this. As a fan of The 1975, it was so obvious to me that most of this album was about MH. The album is full of references to him lyrically and musically. There’s so much…I was shocked. The summation poem really explains it all as well as her notes on Twitter/x when she released the album. Also the part about her feeling that upon reflection, a lot of her wounds were actually self-inflicted. I wish I could hear his side of it, though we’ll probably never know. I wonder if the outcome would’ve been different for them if a section of her fan base hadn’t attacked him/them so brutally. No one wants to hear this, but I really feel that initially he had good intentions, but something happened. Brilliant album. ❤

Agree. I really think the lyric “how dare you say it’s romantic leaving me SAFE and stranded” is the tiniest bit of information we get about why he left. I really do think he was concerned about the impact the negative press would have on her, his mental health, his relationship with the band, his sobriety, etc.

I think he got caught ip in the fantasy they both created during 10 years, they both did. They built up their relationship on that and it was never going to survive reality. Yes, part of the fandom criticism had an impact on the relationship but in her songs she mentions he was self sabotaging the relationship from the beginning .

What an amazing break down! I love the last part about writing the worst men the best. Prob why we don't get anything too harsh about Joe because he is a good person, her main criticism of Joe is boredom, which is of course not great but she couldn't write so scathingly about Joe. It makes me chuckle so much!! 😂😂😂😂

37:30 this is something I've always tried to explain to people! I actually had a conversation with my comparative lit professor about the writing process and she shared that her best writing comes from anger, bargaining, and depression stages of grief. It is sort of a coping mechanism and allows us to sort things out in words. When you are happy, you just want to let the good marinate and seep in. But when you are sad or angry, you write as an outlet, as an escape.

This is so well done and such a cohesive and thorough analysis of TTPD. Just another example of how this album wasn’t written for your casual TS listeners. It was written for the Swifties (the only people who would be buying a physical album and seeing this poem) as an explanation of what has taken place and as a message/lesson. It explains so much and clears up so many "Huh??" moments while listening to certain songs on the album. It breaks my heart to think about her going through all this while on tour. I love all your thoughts!

My mum is married to a singer-songwriter and he has sung and written about her so many times. Even I, as his stepdaughter, appear in several songs. I want to write my own songs too, but only for myself. And my stepfather really helps me a lot with this process. I help him even if he doesn't have an idea for a song, for example. And he also produces his songs himself. At my mum's and his house, they built themselves a tiny little studio. And he records in there. He mostly writes in Russian and he mostly sings in Russian too. My mum and I are Russian Germans. That means our ancestors moved to Russia sometime in the 18th century and settled in what is now Ukraine, for example, or in Kazakhstan. That used to be the Great Tsarist Empire of Russia. And even Catherine the Great was originally a German princess. And my grandmother and grandfather came to Germany 30 years ago and built a life for themselves here after such a long time. And I can even understand Russian, speaking is OK, I'm learning that. And reading and writing are better for me. I know that people will now ask themselves, are you for the Russian government or for Ukraine? I can say for myself and my family that we are for Russia and for Ukraine, but not for the Russian government.❤❤❤❤😊😊

Cloe, Sophia….he never told her he loved her ( learned that in 1989 vault songs)…””tell me you loved me”…”say you’ve always wondered” Peter…she turned out the light when he was 25 and hadn’t returned If you listen to these 3 songs again…thinking about Harry, you will see many other “clues” And these songs will finally make sense

25:15 While writing and recording Midnights the 1975 were writing and recording in the same studio with Jack. Matty said they even collabed on a song but that one did not make the cut or that version did not. Taylor being a diary style writer might have opened that diary more or less for him or as you call it saw him as the night in shining armor and opened up to him. Anyways he got all the material needed to lovebomb and make the right promises to be sure that he would be her first call. At least that is how i picture it in my mind.

I actually don’t think of it as a prologue. I see it as an epilogue. The author’s conclusion and findings after this “autobiography” that was ttpd. I think this was written and meant to be read looking back to what happened and what she learned. That’s why she didn’t put it at the beginning but at the end. It was very deliberate.

Here’s something I don’t think anyone has mentioned. The TTPD logo has a art deco look to it. This was the popular architectural style of the 1920s which is when Clara Bowe was acting. I think this is part of the reason Taylor chose this logo. Art deco is also all over NYC where Taylor loves to spend time. I have to think this inspired the logo. Look at the curves of the top of the Chrysler building and the windows in an art deco home. They are curved like the P and D in the logo. Also the poses she does on the album cover and when she’s lying in the bed in the video resemble the art deco paintings where women are lying across a couch or bed in different states of contemplation. Also the glove and fan she had at the Grammys are very reminiscent of that time. As are the feathers in the TTPD set on the tour. art deco is a big theme and look of this album. It started in the 20s and ended at the end of the 1930 aka the Great Depression. Which is interesting since depression is another big theme of the album. Wonder if there is a connection that she’s using the art style of period in American history when everything and everyone was depressed. Also the roaring 1920s kind of mirrors what life is like when you are in your twenties- a lot of partying and then things settle down in your 30s. Wonder if Taylor is using the 1920s and 1930s as a metaphor for her 20s and 30s and using art deco to pull it all together. Hope someone asks Taylor about this. ❤

Soooo enjoying your dive into her poem. A few things…I was listening to an interview with Matty and whoa… he doesn’t like “double albums”this is before Taylor puts out her Anthology. Haha THE 1975 latest album - song TOOTIMETOOTIME Tays IMGONNAGETYOUBACK And finally on Alchemy…he jokes that it’s heroine but this time with an ‘E’. Matty has (had?) an addiction to heroin - his song ‘can’t live without you’ and your mine may be about them too ‘just can’t say ‘I do’. Why do I feel that they (family) were at city hall and he didn’t show up? She played a song at the 1975 concert in Madison square - her twin - writer & performer. Anyway whatever it is I’m so glad she is in a much better place xo She loves those Brit’s! Now she found someone who’s crazy about her and shows it 😅

29:10 she makes the same kind of comparison with the line in loml "The coward claimed he was a Lion" which has a double meaning since the English Lion stands for bravery.

Interesting…. Your take on it is the opposite of mine. I think it’s for after the album. It’s the summary of what she feels she learnt through making the album not a prologue but an epilogue

I think you're definitely correct. It's in the back of the "book", and is summarising her thoughts on the album. Literally starts with "in summation" :)
