Agree, specially with the merch. It could be more sustainable, since they are very hefty priced. For example, all the cardigans (that are collector pieces) are made with polyester. Why not pick cotton? Or bamboo? Keep in mind they cost 80/90 dolars a piece.

aah Leena that's why I'm heeere, the careful nuance of fangirling grounded in anticapitalism and also anti-stardom. ngl i don't care for Taylor Swift at all and my initial reaction to the video title ugh not that hypetrain but ofc i love you for making criticism accessible via the hype train and also, your poems are lovely!!

I've been a huge Swiftie for years (1989 was my gateway drug) and this video is everything I want the fandom to be. Hopefully we can move away from the picking every word apart for the dirty details of people's lives and instead picking every word apart to form our own meanings and find inspiration for our own art, work, and lives

I love the idea of getting inspiration from songs titles, and I really liked getting your thought process on each of them. I especially liked the last poem, it made me think of Funeral Blues in its structure. The very classic rhymic pattern adds some kind of normality to the poem, though it's talking about being used for love and I found it particularly striking.

our swiftie journey is so similar. i could see her appeal prior to 1989, it just wasn't appealing to me specifically. but that album was on repeat in my car for a year (tbh i skipped about half of it tho). and then i dropped off again until midnights (but some of my fav songs, not just of hers but in general, are on the albums that came out between those two albums). ANYWAY! i love this video concept, am so on board with your reasoning, and will resume watching now.

I do not consider myself a swiftie but I can recognize that she is a good songwriter, engaging performer, and one hell of a business woman. I also didn’t relate to most of her first albums but connected to 1989 at kind of a time in my life when things were in flux and then I didn’t really connect with her music again until Midnights. But I don’t listen with any real regularity. Also I agree that no one needs the influence and wealth and notoriety she has accumulated. Love this prompt for yourself. Really enjoyed the Tortured Poets Department poem.

Taylor gives back constantly, in every city she tours she donates a lot of money to food banks, and she also donates millions to natural disaster relief and cancer research. There is more but I don't have the time, but you get the idea. She also helps any fans who need help, Taylor's people are called Taylor Nation, and they help Taylor carry out good deeds.

Beautiful poetry! I love the idea of engaging with pop culture in this way - using your creative energies to put something out into the world, and not just passively consuming. You and ItsRadishTime have got me thinking a lot recently of how empty a person can become when all they do is consume and never create. Specifically, you create a positive model of what the self can look like when it puts in just as much as it’s taking and I’m so grateful for that 😊 Would love to see a collab between the two of you eventually!

Haven't watched the whole thing yet but needed to comment RE Rime of the Ancient Mariner and an eco reading of it! Two students at my university wrote a play based on the poem about the conversations different seabirds might have at the end of days. It's incredibly poignant and beautiful and raises awareness of microplastics, habitat loss and species decline. It's called For the Sound of the Sea in the Sky!

I think I'd call myself a critical but appreciative casual listener of Taylor Swift. I definitely like some of her music, but I wouldn't consider myself a Swiftie, don't really care about her personal life or album releases and such. And I still think something about it all just puts me off, like the different deluxe versions of albums and the movie and tour and merch prices and all that just feel so drenched in capitalism that I can't help but see her as a billionaire businesswoman, and it kind off puts me off her music as well I think. And from an environmental standpoint too, it's not just the jets and touring itself even the friendship bracelets: the millions of plastic beads people must be buying for those just to (likely) never really wear the bracelets again or (if they do) have them fall apart in a couple of years? Considering the amount of people who go to her shows, often having made tens to hundreds of bracelets (not joking)... it does bother me. But I see my Swiftie friends so excited, buying multiple albums and spending a bunch of money on merch and beads for friendship bracelets and I'm like... am I just a grumpy old hag for not appreciating this like they do and am just hiding behind the anti capitalism argument? At the end of the day, it's fun, people are engaging, finding a creative outlet! Who tf am I to shit on that?

Thank you for the video. I feel someone is geeting a call from Taylor Nation, a special edition with Leena's version. :D I don't like that people need to dig who the songs are about, I don't like that for any artist. I like to separate the artist from the art, because it feel it minimizes their creative effort if it is just reduced to who the song is about. I like to see albums as capsules and I like to imagine my own version of events, that is why I like concept albums so much.

I had a moment when i thought i'm NOT too cool for listening to Taylor Swift, around 1989 album when i was listening to it on repeat trying to convince myself i liked her. But i don't. I just can't stand her and i can't shake the feeling she's not really an artist, she's only a businesswoman that makes heaps of money through her business decisions - not artistic choices. Especially when i see the timing of collaborations or album aestethics - whoever is popular, whatever is currently most on trend. And i can't see the lyrical genius everyone else claims she is, her lyrics are nothing special and sometimes so dull it's cringe. That being said, i love your idea of using the titles as prompts, and i love your poems, so when the album comes out i will definitely check out her lyrics at least (TO COMPARE :x). I really liked your last poem, it reminds me of Paris Paloma lyrics - the self awareness that comes to you only after the relationship ends and you realize they treated you so badly and you never even noticed because you just wanted their love and approval. Considering joining the patreon to hear them all!

I think she is a savvy business woman and the tactics could easily overshadow the art. But she is truly an artist. Every person that talks about working with her talks about how much of a natural, unfiltered, talent that she is. She comes in with fully fleshed out ideas and her collaborators often only tweak or edit. She was signed as a songwriter before she was ever signed as a singer. I wouldn't class myself as a swiftie but I can certainly respect her artistry but can see how the Taylor Swift Machine overshadows this. Plus, in the mainstream at least...I can think of a better example of a lyricist that reaches the emotion of the masses. And that is art too. I don't think all art needs to be complex. That often just makes it inaccessible.

This was fun and I hope you'll do more but I gotta say if you talk to people who actually dedicate their lives to fighting for the environment you'll find that they don't care about Taylor Swift or any other celebrity because the aviation industry (commercial and private) makes up about 3 percent of carbon emissions every year. If every flight was cancelled and nobody ever flew again it would not matter. This conversation mostly serves as a distraction from the CEOs and and the companies they run and the governments who refuse to punish them for destroying our planet. The discourse about Taylors jet usage is largely led by people who hate Taylor being successful which is why people don't keep the same energy for Kim K, Beyonce, Travis Scott or many other celebs and politicians who have a much worse record. The guy who tracks her jet usage is a right winger who successfully managed to "blackmail" Mark Cuban into being his friend and riding his jet in exchange for no longer tracking him. And until recently would like and retweet tweets slut shaming Taylor and wishing harm on her.
