Actually what you read about affirmative action online is exactly how he explained it. It is a system set up to benefit marginalized groups. But what he is saying, is it doesn’t actually benefit those marginalized groups. As the saying goes “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” The goal is supposed to be beneficial but the unintended consequences are as he describes in the video. It is also discriminatory towards “non-marginalized” groups. What Xavier advocates for is getting into schools or jobs solely based on merit. Not based on skin color.

The real problem with Affirmative Action is that it essentially tells you that you aren't good enough to get into a school without help from the government. It tells you that you aren't enough. Raise the standards, and people will rise to them. Lower the standards, and people will fall to them. I'm willing to bet that if affirmative action was truly abolished and the standards were based on a merit system, within a generation, we would see a turnaround in the education system. People would be forced to rise to the occasion. Why do you think charter schools are so in demand? Because they expect more from their students and demand their excellence.

One of the worst episodes of my life was when I accepted a job because the company wanted to hire more Black employees. This was in June 1973 around the time Affirmative Action was building. I was a Machine Designer but was hired as draftsman and was given menial jobs. I discovered that I was a "Token Black". I didnt like and and i became a 'problem' so about 6 months later, I was exiled to a design group in B another building as punishment. Instead I got involved in Advanced Technology spannig several technologies with applications in defense, space, oceanography, and atmosoherics. I was with the company 17 years and ended up with career most people couldnt dream of. 1984 i was promoted to management and became part of the division's A-Team. We were assigned to rescue troubled projects, or introduce new Manufacturing Methods and Technolgy programs. I credit my opportunities and longevity to my standing up as an individual instead of as a "Token Black". Affirmative Action might work for some cases, but the resentment thing was real and demeaning. But i wasnt really an AA hire, coworkers simply thought i was.

My opinion: AA is racial discrimination. Yes the google term mentions marginalized groups- but in the USA, AA has indeed made it easier for some groups and harder for others to get jobs, into college, etc... based on race. Why this hits home- I'm a poor white dude who's been homeless 3 times as a child- and my father was denied jobs for... being overqualified based on his skin color. Equity, equal opportunity, and merit based judgement is what we need. God bless you 2 for always listening to understand rather than listening to reply. 2 things; 1, Thomas Sowell is one of the most educated, level headed, and genuine scholars of our time. Anything you find with his name on it is very likely worth exploring, especially when it comes to American history and black history. 2, Affirmative action IS what you read and it IS what you heard from the video.. Affirmative action when described by someone in favor of it especially a legal brochure, pamphlet, website will be put in a positive light using positive words. Most times using as few words as possible to limit the possibility of questions and introspection. The description the narrator gave in the video was dead-on accurate when it comes to detailing it's functionality and impact in the real world! I've seen it in action, now the wacky left has doubled down on it with DEI. Since DEI hit mainstream society there has been an increase in unqualified individuals making mistakes, accidents, and or showing a serious lack of caring when it comes to work performance and accountability! We have had a massive jump in airplane failures & crashes, contaminated baby formula and many many more such events since Affirmative action & DEI. And just Incase anyone out there is looking to call this hate speech or racist in nature, think again! The REAL world runs on FACTS and FACTS don't care about feelings. ❤ PS, love the channel keep it up!

His point is the main way affirmative action benefits “marginalized people” is to accept them into schools with lower gpa’s and test scores over supposedly non-marginalized people with higher test sores and grade point averages. This means a black student who scored 450 points lower than the Asian student on his SATs and had a 3.2 GPA gets accepted to college ahead of the Asian student who scored 450 points higher on his SATs and had a 4.4 GPA from advanced placement courses. It also denied low income Asians and whites grants and scholarships because they did not belong to the correct racial or ethnic group even though they have higher gpa and sat scores and came from lower income families. It also required institutions to hire or admit quotas from these racial groups over whites and Asians even if they are less qualified. If companies and institutions did not comply they would be denied funding.

Other than Thomas Sowell, read Shelby Steele and his book "White Guilt." This man and his brother are SOOOO incredibly brilliant and impressive in what they have done in their lives. What is heart breaking though was in his book he mentions his singing and his audition for, I think it was the San Francisco Opera. He won the part and said it was the only accomplishment he ever had that he KNEW, for CERTAIN, that he had actually EARNED. THAT one thing was the only thing in his life that he was certain was 100% based on his merit and not on his race. If you just look him up on Wikipedia, your jaw will drop. This man didn't need the help of ANYONE to be successful......but he still doubts himself because of Affirmative Action. While on this subject, there is a movie he narrates about Ferguson you should watch. He son filmed it (he's a prominent filmmaker) and it was really interesting to learn the history of the area and the truth behind the entire series of events surrounding the Ferguson riots. Thomas Sowell is one of the most brilliant people of the last century. He's an economist who has been denouncing Affirmative Action for the past 40+ years....basically since it started. Affirmative Action was designed to "help" people but all it has done is harm. It's not just blacks, it's also women and other minority groups. The idea is that a certain number of women/blacks/Hispanics/etc must be hired/admitted to university/selected. Now, in theory, those people are EQUALLY qualified to the white men (this is the only group that it has been historically okay to show bias against) but the reality is that often in accepting the most qualified minority candidate they are taking the BEST candidate. So on a 100 point test, assume the white man scored 100. The black man scored 95 the white woman scored 90 the black woman scored 85 Affirmative Action makes the choice for the company to hire the black woman. Two boxes checked: black and female. She is not, however, the best choice, based on her score. This is an oversimplification, of course, but Affirmative Action was a disaster from the start for all of us....including those of us who were supposed to benefit from it. Seriously, read anything (and EVERYTHING) Thomas Sowell has written about it. Watch videos on here about him. He's kind of Like James Earl Jones and Morgan Freeman.....I could listen to Mr. Sowell talk for hours.

I've been binge watching your videos. Keep up the search for knowledge. The more you know the better off you'll be. I was a Republican for decades and now consider myself a Libertarian as my views shifted over the years and politicians left me disenfranchised. Affirmative action is meant to help groups that are being segregated or discriminated against. If a company is in an area where 30% of the population is race A but you employ 90% race W, that company can find itself on the wrong end of a lawsuit for discrimination. Public institutions are mandated to match the demographics in their area. There's a lot of debate over the policies’ effectiveness and whether it’s outdated and should be done away with. I think there’s a lot of nuances to it. If everyone had access to the same education, financial resources, etc. it would be a simple answer, But we don’t. I definitly don't have all the answers but it's good to debate and educate.

The video does indeed accurately describe Affirmative Action, and fits the definition you found. The way it was purported to help black people is by simply increasing the number of black people that get into college, whether they were academically prepared or not. It sought to right alleged wrongs by artificially inflating the numbers of black college students. The statistical disparity was misinterpreted as racist policies designed to keep black people out of colleges. Affirmative Action then set out to solve this disparity by making it easier for black people to get into college by lowering admission standards for them rather than trying to help black students study harder, learn more, and thus become more intelligent as a result. Affirmative Action was a misguided attempt at solving a problem that wasn't even there. The people who came up with Affirmative Action didn't even see the real problem. They only saw skin color.

If you had to get open heart surgery and you knew the hospital system participates in affirmative action or a DEI type of program. The surgery only had a 25% chance of survival. At your first introduction with the surgeon you find he could have been someone who was hired on one of those practices. Would you not prefer the surgeon you knew gained the position based on merit? You must understand googles definition of affirmative action leaves much to be interpreted and not the actual full definition. Let’s look at it at its core and the actions in which it does. Does it not lower entry requirements based on the color of someone’s skin? Yes it does. Just as you would judge someone a thief who told you they weren’t yet you saw them sliding through a back window, you judge based on actions. Thats what you do in this situation with the definition. They may have a weak open ended loose definition on google but this video is describing what affirmative action really is….. real systemic racism

Definition of discrimination: the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of ethnicity, age, sex, or disability. The least woke definition of Affirmative Action I could find: (in the context of the allocation of resources or employment) the practice or policy of favoring individuals belonging to groups regarded as disadvantaged or subject to discrimination. Translation: Systemically discriminating against one group or groups of people in favor of another group or groups of people. Ironic that the only "systemic" racism that occurs in this country is part of the thing designed to stop it (i.e. affirmative action).

He actually explained how affirmative action impacted SAT score policies and how they adversely affect individuals. Keep in mind affirmative action is applied in every aspect of society. To opporate a company Affermative action states, I must hire inclusively regardless to who is the most qualified. Hiring some one not qualified (even a white man) isjust stu[id business, however, according to affirmative action I have to have an inclusive employment staff or I lose my LLC. I hire anyone who has the qualifications for the job regardless of skin or sex. The problem comes when I lose a "minority" employee, I can not just hire the next qualified applicant I have to hire a representation "Token" or that minority. Keep in mind at it implementation it was a needed policy cause there are ignorat people in the world but it is doing more harm now then good. It removes the idea that I can get anywhere if I apply my self and work hard, and replaces it with I am dependent on the government to get anywhere in life.

One of the things "affirmative action" did was to make college acceptance based off race. Acceptance Scores on the exams very dependent on your race so that it makes it easier for black and Hispanic students to get in and harder for white and Asain students. So when you go to college, the Asains have to score the highest to get accepted so they are coming into a college where the lowest scoring Asian is already the smarter then the lowest scoring of any other race on campus. The reverse is also true. The scores for acceptance are so much lower for the Black community that the lowest scoring Black student is already behind in college when compared to the lowest scoring students of any other race. In my opinion, Affirmative Action is racist. It has nothing to do with your own person achievements but is based solely on your race and immediately ties race to classism. Viewing Asains as the over acheivers and Black Americans as the weaker class. In my opinion, it's disgusting. The more things like this that take place, more people will be separated by race because it isn't an even playing feild for all people as it should be. I don't even like using race as a descriptive word for another person but yet I have to in conversation about this ignorance. We are all people and if we are all citizens, we are all Americans and should have an equal chance to build up our future and family with our hard work and dedication to fulfilling our dreams. JMHO

Dr Sowell is an economist and has written columns, books, etc. I love his work and mind! I watched a Clarence Thomas documentary, and he was very liberal as a younger man. It may have been AA policies that started him toward conservatism. Thanks for reviewing videos which may be different in scope to your beliefs/leanings.

That all sucks! No one should get a job, promotion, education, or anything else based solely on their skin color or ethnicity. We are all God’s creation and we all should work for what we get!

I have a few people I talk to and I try to tell them to get the MLB 24 baseball game and it has the Negro Leagues on there where you play Jackie Robinson Willie mays Buck Leonard but it shows pictures back in the early 1900s ,1920s where the negro league as it was called would sell out baseball stadiums every night across the United States. Now when you look at the pictures the stadium full of African-American people the baseball players when not in uniforms dressed up to the nines I just feel like we have been lied to about history and they have covered up stuff for so long that some people just are uncomfortable with uncovering the past. For some people it's hard to leave that little bubble they've had around them all their life. Kamala Harris wants to come out praise Abraham Lincoln and he was a republican, and in the same sentence wants to condemn slavery which was a democratic thing. I mean it makes no sense. And I'm like how can people not see this. I mean a lot of people don't know Abraham Lincoln's vice president was a Democrat

Affirmative is good and helpful to many American students. Where I feel it fails sometimes is the college and student's grades don't match. For example an average student gets accept to Harvard the chance of success for that individual is less likely. An hornor student in the same situation has a greater chance of graduating and doing well at Harvard!

Think about this: do you want the pilot of the airplane that you’re Flying in to be hired because of the color of their skin, or their ability to fly an airplane? Diversity hires, and affirmative action put the doubt that the pilot was hired because of his skill rather than the color of his skin. That’s not a risk I’m willing to take, is it a risk you’re willing to take?

You are smarter than you think. He was explaining the result of affirmative actions. Google is quoting what the creator of affirmative action , wanted to happen. It’s definitely not the same thing.

To ask a question to your question...Is it right to grant success based on skin color? Affirmative action was a well-intentioned move that forgot the lessons of history...We aren't God. Let nature take care of itself. Generally speaking, the more we intervene, the more we screw things up. Peace, Love!!

Why affirmative action? Easier and cheaper to lower standards instead of training and educating. If someone is not qualified when he had a 3.0 GPA when it used to be a 3.5 GPA to get accepted.

Thomas Sowell is a legitimate source. He is an economics professor I don't remember which university. He doesn't do individual videos as far as I know, but you will see him quoted all over. I do believe he has written several books. Well in fact he would have had to as a professor. He is not a republican nor a democrat. As far as I know. But he is definitely fiscally conservative.

Anything you can watch from Thomas Sowell is a must . Ok first if you Google an answer it's from a place that doesn't want you to think for yourselves. And will change the definition of words to fit their needs.

Hes not wrong, that is affirmative action. But it is also more nuanced. It's not just schooling. It's also in the workforce. Corporations like Coca-Cola, Apple and Google just to name a few also use affirmative action policies. While I think that it's a noble thought on paper. It does tend to sometimes put people who may not be as qualified in the position. All in the name of dei. Just ask yourself one question. Would you want a brain surgeon who is completely qualified to do the surgery, or would you want someone who isn't as qualified but instead got the position because of their skin color? This is the problem with affirmative action. Not to forget it does cause a division between people. On terms of education, I think these institutions should have the exact same requirements across the board, but maybe have scholarships for minorities that can't afford it. As a way to lift people. But they still have to earn it. That way there is never any doubt.

The definition you gave is what he said. Put in systems to benefit marginalized groups. The university system he explains does that, It benefits certain races over others.
