Despite the former cold war metaphor that you describe in the intro, Noxus feels a lot like the usa to me A melting pot that cares only about what amount of individual power you can bring to the table and considers your ability to step over your compatriots as an expression of your personal skill and merit, I mean...

Yeah, the whole 'Triumvirate of Power' thing feels like an idea that got tacked on as an afterthought, way after the artists in charge of Noxus's visual design did their thing. It rings especially hollow since, although Swain needs Darius's backing to stay in charge of Noxus, several of his voice lines mention that he and Leblanc are constantly playing this cat-and-mouse game of espionage and assassination attempts that imply Swain is not only at odds with Leblanc but also *as good as her* at being a spymaster (a theme which appears strongly in both his lore and in-game mechanics): Swain is capable of being the pillars of Vision and Guile all on his own, not to mention he also represents Strength quite well what with being half-demon and all. If we delve back into the lore - and as you mentioned in an earlier video about Swain, if I recall - the previous leader of Noxus, Boram Darkwill, was being used as a puppet by Leblanc to pull Noxus's strings from behind the scenes, which is very much the modus operandi of the Black Rose. Supposedly Leblanc has attempted and failed to do the same thing to Swain (who in a very Bruce Swain kind of way is said to have an unbreakable and incorruptible will) and instead is trying to remove him, presumably so she can install another puppet and regain her control. Rather than a Triumvirate ruling with a singularity of purpose it seems more like the newly-arrived Duumvirate of Swain and Darius holding out against the traditional leader Leblanc, almost like a civil war but one played out in typical cold war style with spies and lots of behind the scenes backstabbing. On a related note, one of my favourite lines from Swain's rework is the following: 'An assassin is due at any moment. It's how I know Leblanc cares.' The 'frenemies' dynamic Swain has going with Leblanc is an amusing one, although I do wish people would stop shipping them on that basis: Swain is the cold, calculating, visionary leader of Noxus, he has much more important things to plan for than getting his rocks off.

I see modern Demacia as Athens and modern Noxus as Sparta. Athens was a very civilized and smart nation but had very little room to grow as a nation because they were such perfectionists, on the other hand, Sparta was incredibly engaged in war and military but also had women in higher roles where they could not have them in Sparta, and had much more freedom to do what you wanted to as long as you could prove yourself

To offer a reason why the aesthetic is overwhelmingly Noxian in spite of the nation being a melting pot I think it's because the people come there *to become Noxians.* It's not a melting pot in the sense that the culture formed by the people emigrating to the nation turn it into something *more,* rather they assimilate and become part of *it*

Hey, dude. Your videos are nice and deserve a bit more exposure considering how much time and effort you put into each one. Seeing you(or more accurately hearing you) nerd out over League makes me incredibly happy. I feel like there isn’t much of a fandom around it unlike other topics you cover constantly, like Overwatch. The triumphravte was installed after Swain staged a coup, and it was his idea, but the empire was there before so the lack of 3's could simply be the old ways staying around a little bit.

I wish that somewhere within these universe pages there was something about the biology such as what animals/creatures and plants reside within them. Idk, it would be something id enjoy looking at and drawing. Nice video btw!

The Institute of War (The League of Legends) was retconned out because it's a bit of a stretch for a few magicians to be able to control powerful beings like Aurelion Sol. League of Legends (The game) is just a hypothetical thing, if all the champs fought. (And had their powers roughly equalized) I think that now, Ryze and his master (Or something like that. I can't remember) stopped the rune wars by taking the World Runes, the things that were actually destroying the planet.

I think you can't see a lot of triangles because that'd give Noxus a resemblance to ancient Egypt, and while that could be good (the Pharaohs did essentially enslave every single one of their citizens) it would also look too much like Shurima, which is supposed to be the Egypt in League.

Since they retcon the nations, i'm really hoping at some point they'll introduce other minor factions, or at least branches within the different nations. Like have a state that acts as a Burgundy to Demacia's France; technically bows to the Lightsheilds, but strong enough that they are more a tributary rather then a proper vassal. Or Switzerland to Noxus's Germany. Always desired to be conquered, but to well fortified, and to defendable of a nation for Noxus to actually spend the overwhelming resources needed to take it.

Going back to your discussion on your criticism with Noxus not having much of much of a personal aesthetic when the whole nation is about the individual and rising to power. Perhaps the three top dogs in Noxus, Swain, Darius, and possibly LeBlanc have forced that aesthetic. You ask why aren't there any circles going on in the architecture of Noxus; that could simply be because if the individual wanted to make a circular type building they would have to rise up in power and defeat one of the three pillars of strength. It would be in Darius' right to destroy someone's building if he did not find it fitting, if the individual wanted that building he would have to be more powerful than the person opposing his individuality. The Noxus aesthetic could simply just be an enforcement of the three pillars of strength that only allow some individuality if the three find it fitting. Just a thought though! I love your videos over the analysis of regions and nations and hope you make more, keep them coming!

Part of the missing triangles in Noxian architecture could also be that the virtue of guile very much necessitates secrecy. That could've been done way better by incorporating the shadows within the landscapes more clearly as continuations of the many rectangles though. BUT: I also think that outside of the Noxian Arches which line their roads there are tons of angles insenuation parts of triangles. A lot of the negative space on their city maps likely results in (uneven) triangles, especially when it comes to their largest walls.

Immortal bastion is one of my favorite places ❤️ mayby it’s part of the reason why noxus builds more around 4 and why u don’t see cycles around it. It might propaganda everyone who sees it to strife for something similar... I hope we get more of it at mordekaiser rework ^^ and mayby then we find out more about swains ravendemon which was contained in the castle.

I'm going to sound like a broken record, but I love your videos so much, I can't even… Architecture is great, love architecture. I noticed a lot of triangle shaped decorations in the concept arts. Like most of the towers are decoracted with triangle shaped edges ( 4:40 and 10:13 ), when you look at most of the pictures you can see the triangle in how it generally reaches towards the sky, which makes it look like a triangle. Also if you look at the city scape of the Immortal Bastion it is shaped like a triangle, with the main Tower in the centre and the sprawling suburbs around (10:59).

The weapons concept page really reminds me of the Hunger Games aesthetic

there is something to be said for the way that Noxus in aesthetic an lore reflects al lot of the ideas of the fall of the roman republic and the emergence of the empier specifically the ide of the triumvirate is lifted straight from the fall of the roman republic and further the idea of a melting pot witch makes all into itself in an empire bult on power alone is something that is deeply reflective of the power politics of the roman oligarchy

just had a thought: if lebanc is an entity that transfers between hosts, that is v v v similar to the aspects from targon that choose new hosts, as well as the darkin. theory: leblanc is an aspect, guile specifically. swain is in control of the aspect of vision, and darius has a nameless darkin axe.

As a LeBlanc main I’d really love for you to go over her lore and in game stuff, Because i feel like they could do a lot with her deceiver theme without actually changing her gameplay, for example when you die on your screen she just like turns invis and watches a clone die while the enemy team just sees you die, as well as the fact that she should probably receive some more in game voice lines hinting at the lore and secrets of other champions in a similar way to swain maybe? Anyway i just thought she’d be an interesting character to talk about, especially since she has so many connections to so many champs in the lore: mord, swain, riven(she enchanted rivens sword) ect. (Can you please reply if you don’t want to, its fine if you don’t, I’d just like to know that.)

I think the reason why you don't really see many Trifari references in Noxus aesthetics is because the Trifari is more of a recent thing. If I recall correctly, I think that in the short story "The Principles of Strength" is mentioned that this mentality was instaured about 7 years ago when Swain got the last emperor killed. 7 years is enough time to change flags and stuff, but I don't think it would be enough to have their architecture affected.

It does seem like the "three" principle does not appear often in the designs of Noxian architecture but at least on the Armor and weapons, you can see three holes, or three markings on them. Triangular shapes might have looked less brutish and strong, so the rectangular shapes might have been incorporated to emphasize that idea, and the marks could the reminders of Noxian ideals

I overall like the idea of Noxus over Demacia. They say that they are the good guys and stuff, but they kill mages, which are sometimes Demacians, so they literally kill their people. In Noxus there's more "freedom". You still need to gain reputation to not end up on the street, but they aren't discriminating anybody, they have strict "rules", and if you brake them, then you end up broke and as a beggar

In terms of there being more threes... Well it should be mentioned that THAT mentality that philosophy is relatively new in terms of Noxus' history in comparison, there hasn't been enough time for it to be fully intergrated into the architectural designs and such. Swains rule is like what 10 years old at this point i think? And idk it probably takes around 10 years to build a decent house or something like that. All im saying is there hasn't been enough time for the rule of 3 to become apparent in their overall aesthetic. The old aesthetic of Darkwill the previous ruler will be more prevalent for a while dont u think?

The reason there arent more symbols of three in Noxian architecture is because the Triumvirate didnt exist until Swain took over. Before tSwain Noxus was led by a dictator, Boram Darkwill. But when Swain uncovered that Darkwill was being contolled by the Black Rose (LBs secret society) Swain overthrew him and decided to implement a Triumvirate so that no one man could lead Noxus into ruin in a conquest such as the one in Ionia.

* Noxus seems like it could be a good place to explore the consequences of limitless personal freedom, with no obstacles save other free citizens. Such a society would tend towards having a minority with power using their personal freedoms to gain greater power at the expense of others (and their personal freedoms). It seems to fit well with what Noxus is in practice, with its unified aesthetics and values; there _were_ individuals from many nations and cultures there once, but they have been crushed by the powerful elites who can force their own preferred aesthetics and values on the entire nation. No idea if Riot wants to do that. * The League of Legends isn't really like the United Nations. It's more like what the UN would be if they could get people to listen to them. * I like the idea of an army not enforcing a _uniform_ in favor of enforcing an _aesthetic._ Probably because I have no idea how it could work out, so I just keep imagining all the ways it would fail. * Another idea I like is an argument between one of the Aesthetics Officers arguing with a blacksmith over how practical a triangular breastplate would be, or a king trying to convince his architects that triangular stone blocks would be _perfect_ for his next big tower.

I think the whole triumvirate thing is shown most in the icon for Noxus, and the three towers of the Immortal Bastion, but yeah, I don't see many triangles. Then again, to me (in-world at least) Noxus doesn't really feel like a place that would preach its beliefs through architecture. I'd imagine the principles are much more ingrained into the people's minds than their buildings. As for the lack of melding of cultures, it think it fails to show in that wide shot piece of art because the Immortal Bastion is in focus, not the entirety of Noxus Prime as a city. In the foreground the buildings feel looser, and I think that in those later expansions upon the Bastion, you would find a bit more more evidence of people who've moved to Noxus without dropping their whole homeland culture. Then again, afaik we have yet to see pre-Noxus Immortal Bastion, so who knows what's new and what's from Mordekaiser's original fortress. Love your lore and breakdown videos, they really make me think.

I get that the Cold War metaphor has Noxus as bad guys and therefore the Soviets, but in practice, I feel like both nations subscribe to American ideals, just different ones. Demacia's values the 1950s suburban white picket fence Americana, with good wholesome values of justice and friendliness, think "It's A Wonderful Life", until you peel away the veneer and find a society deeply hostile to anything that doesn't fit its ideal, with a persecuted underclass that's brutally suppressed, think religious fundementalism's hatred of LGBT+ and gender nonconforming people (and racism, but that doesn't super apply to Demacia). Noxus is more 80s America under Reagan, the American dream melting pot where anyone can hypothetically make it, where people come and chase their dreams, if they have the ambition to seize the dreams by the throat and strangle it to submission. Realistically though, if you’re a pretty smart guy with excellent skills, you’d still probably get killed really quick by the well-established powerful people in Noxus who already have a an advantage from accumulated capital. Given that I don’t see Noxus having trustbusting laws (maybe unions, but your boss will send thugs to kill you unless you kill your boss first), and you might have been a non-citizen slave, you’re screwed. It's social Darwinism and the capitalistic “philosophy”. It’s the cult of the individual. You can make it big! Or you can be trampled. So, depending on what you’re born as, both places are nightmarish hellholes. As a distinctly non-exceptional person, the best bet out of the two is Demacia, but I’ll have to live with the mage persecutions on my conscience. Aesthetic wise? I love brutalist architecture and constructivist aesthetics so Noxus is gorgeous to me,
