Today....we take on a mystery. A 25 year old Islay from one of our favorite independents. And Mike and I are going to deep dive into what in the world this stuff is!

Taking into account there’s no independent bottling of Lagavulin and Ardbeg IBs are just crazy expensive, this must be either Laphroaig or Caol ila. Based on the review, 99% Laphroaig. But again anything is possible!

I get Laphroaig in such a powerful way in this scotch. It’s not Lagavulin. Maybe some Ardbeg? Guys pick up the Offerman 11 yo #4 with some time in a Tim cask! Delicious! I bought a case this morning!! $119 before taxes in Vancouver. It will disappear fast. In this expression I am thinking it’s a Laphroaig with some Ardbeg.

I'd hope they wouldn't blend two Islays and sell it as Single Malt... but that wouldn't rule out something super cheeky like finishing one in a cask from the other. 🤣 I often get a tropical-ish fruit note in Laphroaig, for whatever that's worth.

I can imagine this distilled at, lets say Ardbeg. Then aged or finished in a used cask from Laphroaig or Caol Ila. I would love to know for sure.

Yes great point Mike. There wouldn’t be two Islay scotch whiskies in this expression. But was it distilled at Ardbeg? Makes sense!I did enjoy it a lot. Not spectacular but very nice!

Fun review - consensus seems to be Ardbeg (but who knows!).

This is my kind of "blind" review. An off profile indy bottling of god knows what. That's what makes it fun.

I didn't get the "cooling peat" but it's not a stretch to say Ardbeg.

I bought 3 bottles of batch #1 a couple years ago and I'd say it's a Laphroaig due to the tropical notes. But again it was batch #1... Great whisky anyway!

I”ll have to keep an eye out for that bottling. I would imagine it’s just as impressive of whisky.

@@topshelfwhisky I'd love to hear your thoughts on the first batch if you manage to get your hands on a bottle! Very elegant whisky. For what it's worth I'd rate it a 91, just about what I would rate the Talisker 25 from '05 (for reference, Lagavulin feis ile 2015 is at a 93 for me)

Nice evaluation, guys. Having bought 3 bottles of this, I agree with much of what's said here but lean more towards Dustin's take on it. I also have it on rather good authority that this was distilled at Ardbeg by the personnel from Laphroaig using Port Ellen maltings. Thinking more about how this comes off, I'm also guessing that they used Laphroaig casks.

Ardbeg!!! I can believe it. This was fun to speculate on. I would have bet money it was Laphroaig.
