This video demonstrates the ease and cleanliness of using TCR Composites' towpreg in the filament winding process. Also included is the application of stretch tape (used for compaction) as the outer layer, prior to curing in an oven.
*Note: the winding machine process has been slowed for the making of this video.

If someone else have the same doubt about it: *It's an empty mould, just an giant aluminum can, and it's meant to be left inside, the aluminum by itselft would break, but the CF is holding it tight so when pressurized, it's like if the inside and outside pressure are equalized. But yes, there's also two other types of moulds, one is made of rubber(with structural steel wiring to retain desired the form) and it's inflated, and the other is a meltable polymer, or even soluble polymer, one is pulled from inside when withered, the other is just melted away during the curing proccess or dissolved by a solvent that doesn't cause harm to the CF.*

I'm a winding machine operator, from my experience working with a similar machine a cylinders shown on this video could take anywhere from 15-45 mins depending on pressure capacity. A higher pressure will increase the amount of fiber used and winding process.

@@RBAERO I assume there is no mandrel inside the tank, which means that the liner is also playing the role of a mandrel. Any thoughts if there is a risk of liner buckling due to the applied tension load of winding tapes, which "I assume" will generate a compressive load on the metallic thin liner?

Helical & hoop tapes will generate a compressive load on the liner during the winding. Any thoughts on how to check if there is a risk of buckling of the liner? It sounds like the liner in this case plays the role of a mandrel as well. Thanks.

Amazing illustration of pressure vessel manufacturing. Did you get to design the liner regarding any potential buckling failure? How much is the applied load on the liner due to winding tape? Thanks very much.

How is the adhesive that binds the layers together applied? At what point in the winding process is it applied? Is the carbon fiber pre-impregnated with the appropriate resin before winding or is the cylinder wrapped and then the binding agent is added afterward? I've wondered if the carbon fiber is actually bonded to the surface of the mandrel or is it just wrapped around the mandrel with no bonding between the mandrel and the carbon fiber wrap?

just wonder, how you take the aluminum mold out after the winding is done?
@tonythomas951
@tonythomas951 6 жыл бұрын
Hasan Kazani, often the aluminum mold is hollow and is left inside but if a pure carbon fiber vessel is desired a soluble mandrel is used then washed out after curing the fiber. Advanced Ceramics Manufacturing in Tucson, Az. makes water soluble mandrels in just about any configuration. They are a Native American owned company owned by the Tohono O Odam Nation.
@Anaxagoran
@Anaxagoran 6 жыл бұрын
The aluminum is meant to be the interior liner. I work at Steelhead Composites in Golden and that's the most common product we make. We have also done linerless vessels which the initial liner is water soluble like Tony said. There are also steel liners and plastic liners, both of which stay inside as well.

How long does it take to wind a vessel like this, approximately?
@Anaxagoran
@Anaxagoran 6 жыл бұрын
Depends on the size and intended pressure of the vessel. Where I work we make as small as 0.5 liter, 3500 psi vessels which we can wind in like 10 minutes, or larger ones like 25 gallon vessels that can take a couple of hours and can do 3 at a time.

The material being layed up is "Pre-empregnated" carbon fiber which means that the material has an epoxy resin mixture with an additive that kicks at a higher temperature thus requiring an auto-clave to kick and cure the part.

@@mishal531 Hi! I'm looking for a cheap manufacturing process to make 10 meters cubed tanks that can handle water heated to 1000c AND remain liquid, continuously for 25 years. Can you recommend something?
@mckenziekeith7434
@mckenziekeith7434 Жыл бұрын
@@l0I0I0I0 water cannot remain liquid at 1000 degrees (F or C). At any temperature above 374 C it will be either in the gas phase (at lower pressures) or it will be a supercritical fluid (at higher pressures). Also, there is no epoxy resin system that can maintain strength at 1000 degrees (F or C). Also, most of the physical properties of water do not remain as expected at such high temperatures. Basically, it is not possible to heat water to 1000 degrees and contain it in a vessel (except maybe as a vapor) and even if you did, it probably won't behave the way you expect. I can't even find a reference giving pressures at temperatures that high. I think practically speaking, whatever application you have in mind is not going to work out the way you think it will.
@l0I0I0I0
@l0I0I0I0 Жыл бұрын
@@mckenziekeith7434 all good points. I've reflected on this over time, the bigger problem I suspect is that in order for water to suck up those massive BTUs requires the actual phase change to take place, meaning for water to change from liquid to gas. No change no btu jump. Even if you get the phase change, it would require a large cat to contain the gas, I would also think? I'm yet to verify this but I suspect or rational it to be the case. If no phase change, you miss out on many BTUs at the phase change. There are high temp high pressure epoxies but they are exceedingly expensive but again more importantly after watching the titanic sub implode, I have questions as to how well it would last over time. I suspect stainless steel would be a better choice.

MIkeflower It would be a disposable mandrill. Some chemicals corrode polymer and that is why we dont use carbon fibre for space craft fuel tanks, if this is intended for similar chemicals or cryogenics than having an aluminium liner would protect the carbon fibre while the carbon fibre is the structure. Or, the carbon fibre can be cut on one end to remove the mandrill and than a specifically made end cap can be fitted.

you mean the carbon fiber winding !? if so, its for increasing the pressure capability. its a high strength fiber. if you are asking about the last shown tape wrap, its for compaction during curing process (where you can expect volatiles causing distortion ). hope it clears.

Yep, for increasing the capability. An aluminum liner by itself won't hold nearly as much pressure as a carbon-wrapped vessel. Carbon wrapped vessels are a lightweight alternative to steel vessels.
