Te Huia Train - New Zealand's NEWEST Rail Service
Welcome to the next NZ installment. In this episode, we get to experience the rail journey between Auckland and Hamilton. We dive into the origins of this service and how it came to be, and also discuss how sustainable it is seeing how this service is on a 5 year trial run.
I genuinely enjoyed this ride, but I also did observe some pretty glaring faults with it.
Come along with me and enjoy the scenery.

Great video Ryan, you got me, I’m heading to Auckland tomorrow night with a couple of days free b4 a cruise back to Melbourne, so loving trains too I’m going to do this trip. You’re pronunciation of New Zealand place names , wow, they just roll off your tongue, I’m impressed.. Safe travels, looking forward to your next video..

Te Huia is a great service to have. Have used it a couple of times now from Auckland to Hamilton and return. Great to not have to fight the Auckland motorway traffic, sit back and relax on comfy chairs with a bite to eat and drink from the on board cafè. The timetable is created for the Hamilton folk in mind. Would be great to have an earlier service from Auckland to Hamilton as you have to wait for the train to return to Auckland so it is limiting if traveling from Auckland in the morning. Staff are awesome on board. Get a Bee Card which costs the cheaper than paying full fare and can also be used around other Districts on their public transport.

The carriages were converted from British Rail Mk 2D carriages which were new in 1971. In 1998 they were launched as suburban carriages in Auckland. The bogies are definitely different to the comfortable ride of the standard gauge bogies they rode on in the UK.

Te Huia is a Hamilton/Auckland/Hamilton subsidised 'commuter' style inter-regional passenger train service, currently operating 2 return services per day Monday to Friday and 1 return service on Saturday. The Te Huia fleet consists of three 4 carriage (two 50 seat passenger carriages, one 20 seat cafe/handicap carriage and one generator/driver cab carriage for 28 passengers and bikes) and one locomotive train sets. Due to the current timetables and Auckland Council not keen for Te Huia to operate on its precious Metro train network, only one train set is used with the second train sits at Hamilton's Te Rapa rail yards not earning any money. The third train set as an emergency spare set. Despite the issues, Te Huia is exceeding passenger targets and is developing its own market both from Hamilton and Auckland. During school holiday periods and on Saturdays, Te Huia operates as a 5 carriage train set with a extra 50 seat passenger carriage being added. From 8 February 2024, Te Huia will have a new timetable with additional services. As a frequent user of Te Huia, the ride quality is slowing improving as the track between Auckland (Pukekohe) and Hamilton is slowly being upgraded, as the track is maintained for rail freight operations. Up to 7 weeks ago Te Huia use to have two locomotives at either end which didn't help in the ride quality, as the trailing locomotive was 'dead' weight restricting the natural ride of carriages. Now Te Huia has one locomotive in push/pull operation, where the locomotive pushes the train from Hamilton to Auckland pulls the train back to Hamilton. which has improved the ride quality. I have been on Te Huia where speed has been up to 108 kp/h which is not bad for a track that has a maximum speed limit of 110 kp/h. With regards to Te Huia running time of 2hrs 36 mins each way, the timetable has a lot of padding built into it to cater for speed restrictions due to the upgrading of track and electrifcation between Papakura and Pukekohe in preparation of the opening of the Auckland's Central Rail Link in late 2025/early 2026. Pukekohe is the end of Auckland's metro rail network and is close to the Auckland/Waikato boarder. Once the Central Rail Link is opened and high capacity signalling (ETCS Level 2) and train control is operational, The Huia's running times will be reduced. Since Te Huia, is funded as a public transport service, Beecard 'tap & travel' ticketing/payment system is available for travel on Te Huia and on Hamilton's urban and Waikato regional bus services. Beecard can also be used on public transport services in 9 other regions in NZ. Once the new national open loop 'tap & travel' ticketing/payment system is rolled by 2026, will see more passengers using Te Huia between Auckland and Hamilton as the new system will eliminate having 2 'tap & travel' cards and cash fares on Te Huia allowing seamless travel to/from and within each region. Rotokauri is a local bus/train transfer hub. The Train manager is correct, it is cheaper to go to Frankton, as on demand ride sharing (taxi, Uber, etc) prices are cheaper from Frankton than from Rotorkauri. Yes, the creamy chicken/mushroom pie is very tasty and so are the heated muffins. Ryan is right, prices are cheap on Te Huia.

Mate, always appreciate your insights. It now makes perfect sense why the ride quality is such. Some sections of the track were so bad there was just no way anyone could safely stand, and the crew did make announcements for people to hold on. Yes, I was always wondering why Te Huia doesn't pull into Britomart. Would be awesome if it did. I got into a taxi at Sky Tower and the driver didn't even know where is Strand Station. 🤦
@chrismckellar9350
@chrismckellar9350 7 ай бұрын
@@ryansofly - No surprises about Auckland taxi drivers not knowing where the The Strand station is. Diesel locomotives are no longer allowed in the Britomart Station hence the Northern Explorer and Te Huia has to terminate/depart The Strand station. The worst ride quality is between Pukekohe and the beginning of the Whangamarino Wetlands being the second largest wetland complex in the North Island, which is single track. There are plans to upgrade the track between Pukekohe and Te Rapa (Hamilton) with electrification and track speeds up to 160kp/h for approximately NZ$3.2 billion due to increase rail freight but NZ is a country that see rail as out dated despite the national rail network has a catchment of 80% of NZ's population - from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island. In your video, you mentioned Te Huia was banned on Auckland's metro rail network. The ban was put in place by the rail safety regulator - NZ Transport Agency which is the same agency the provide public transport funding to regional councils but also funds roading in the country. Since Te Huia next funding negotiations start next year, whilst I am not into conspiracy theories, me and others find it odd the NZ Transport Agency placed the the ban on Te Huia. After review into the red light incident, Kiwirail which owns and operates Te Huia under contract 'forgot' to activate the ETP (electronic train protection) system that didn't warn the driver of the red light. To give you some back ground into rail in NZ, Kiwirail Holdings Ltd trading as 'Kiwirail' is a Government owned 'for profit' company that operates a 'closed access' national rail infrastructure network as well as a train and ferry operator. Kiwirail is only interested in operating freight trains and the 3 scenic 'tourist' passenger trains and the Interislander ferry services between the North and South Islands and has no interest in operating any urban, regional and inter-regional passenger train services unless some pays for them. The two regional metro train networks in Wellington and Auckland, are fund by their respective Councils who owned their respective passenger trains, receives top up funding from NZ Transport Agency, making passenger rail in NZ a bit farcical ☺
@ryansofly
@ryansofly 7 ай бұрын

@@ryansofly - If you do come back, I suggest travel on the Capital Connection train that operates between Palmerston North and Wellington. This service is a 'commericalisied' service which is also operated by Kiwirail receives funding from Greater Wellington Regional and Horizons Regional councils to cover any operating losses. The Capital Connection train has updated version of The Huia carriages. In Wellington, besides the the metro train services there is the Wairarapa Connection train that operates between Wellington and Masterton in the Wairarapa. The Connection train is subsidised 'commuter' style passenger rail services. The Wairapapa region is known for cuisines and, wines and crafted beers. Kiwirail's Great Journeys NZ passenger trains being the Northern Explorer, the Coastal pacific and the TranzAlpine will have their 'new' Scenic Plus carriages on the TranzAlpine from 14 Dec 23, The TransAlpine from 14 Feb 24 and the Northern Explorer from 16 May 24. Scenic Plus offers a the traveler a fine dining experience whilst watching the ever changing unique scenery. People from overseas forget NZs small population. Apart from the main cities, you must have a car, or you will never leave your home. For this train service to work you need at least a 2-hour service and preferably a 1-hour service. It MUST also be quicker. I have often considered this service, but found the timetable means hours of waiting time. Car is a much better option. Sad really because the price is fair, and I love trains.

@MichaelBeeny
@MichaelBeeny Ай бұрын
@@ryansofly Coming from the UK some 20 years ago, I still miss the price competition you get from scale. Supermarkets and petrol are good examples. When we first arrived in NZ, petrol prices were to the cent exactly the same in every garage. Price fixing was illegal, but everyone did it. Today we only have 2 sources of food. Everything has GST (sales tax) on every item. Unlike UK, even food is taxed, all helping to increase the overall price. No free pay either, earn $1 it will be taxed. Even food made here is expensive, it's cheaper to buy NZ lamb in UK than here and often better quality As for the trains? I don't really think it's going to happen, maybe in the larger towns but for the other areas, it's way too late, mostly single track, and everyone has a car, because you need one!

Re: The Northern Explorer, yes your suspicions are correct, they are pretty much the same, although the cafe offering was much more substantial (though when I went in 2019 much of it was supplied by Wishbone, so I don't know what is happening with that now that Wishbone has folded). In fact the cafe is in a dedicated lounge type car which is available to patrons of the cafe (you must vacate when finished your meal/snack). I ended up buying quite a few things there so I could stay in the much more comfortable cafe car for longer! Its a good idea to take cash though as the train won't have signal for much of the volcanic plateau (you can still use card but they will insist on holding it until the train comes back in range).

@@ryansofly it’s sad that people recognise that we need to get greener and reduce our carbon footprint yet still insist on driving everywhere and in single occupant cars more often than not, and entirely determine viability by time taken to get there faster by car. The train is even named after a native bird extinct from colonisation, yet locals haven’t heard of the service, much less, use it. Frustrating where we’re headed as a society in general. 🤷🏽‍♀️ The train looks clean but it’s a shame they couldn’t circumvent the quality of the ride and suspension as you said.
