Teaching our 7 year old daughter Braylee (with autism and nonverbal) is one of our goals while homeschooling. Her handwriting has regressed over the last couple of years but we are starting to make progress again. We also talked about earth and did some cutting. #autism #weefam #weehomeschool

I can honestly say that Braylee is doing a spectacular job with her homeschooling. She is making leaps and bounds...you guys are way ahead of me in schooling even though I'm in the 10th grade and working on algebra, science, reading, writing and geometry. She is just learning to write do math, science and learning to communicate effectively with the Proloquo2go app. I enjoy seeing your daughter's progress in everyday tasks and responsibilities (and the struggles, to say the least). Once again keep up the good work 😉and continue doing what you do to strive. I do apologize for a long description of how much I LOVE ❤ this channel but I do appreciate you taking the time to read this. Thank you for these amazing videos. It helps me understand that my autism is more than just a disability, it's a DIFFERENT ABILITY💪. Anyways I'm running out of ideas to talk about here but please have a blessed year🙏

I know I’m a little bit late to comment on this video but I would like to mention the pomodoro technique. You do 1 activity for 20 min and have 5 min brake. This time can change depending on her tolerance and build up time in the activity or shorten the time of rest. And you could use sand watch so she can understand visually that the activity time will or rest time is going and will end. Hope this is a helpful comment you would be surprised how effective are sand watching in a ASD children’s centre.

You can look on Amazon they have pencil grips that would probably help her grasp the pencil better, and she will learn how to use the pencil easier. She traces the letters really good.

She can do it, just needs more help. She doesn’t like the grips and things that would help so far but we do work on the different types. I think it will just take finding the right thing for her. 🙂

U guys are doing a great job working with her/teaching her at home. I did it for the last 3 months of last school year,the first month of this school year n I've been doing it again since November 13th n still doing it. It can be tough on her sometimes because she needs breaks n they give her a hectic schedule for a 6 yr old with all her classes n therapies. She has a tough time differentiating-she thinks school is for learning, work n home is for playing/chilling/doing what she wants but she's getting better with it. And I actually love being so hands on n involved in what she's learning/doing. I think it's stupid that Pluto isn't considered a planet anymore. It's been a planet for my whole life n before me n all if a sudden the past couple years they say it's not. Crazy.

I've been going back through your channel and watching the past videos that jump out at me. I can not get over how precious she is. And I applaud you for sticking with the homeschool thing and helping her through it. One of my friends has six year old twins and little boy absolutely hates anything that involves writing, even writing numbers on math worksheets. Trying to homeschool during the quarantine thing has been a nightmare. Keep up the good work. You can do this!

☺️ thank you. Sometimes it’s hard and I know so many are struggling right now. We don’t actually have to do schooling since she’s not enrolled but I feel for those who do. Many kids like B need supports and taught in certain ways to succeed and we definitely aren’t professionals! It’s a drastic change for so many kids and probably weird to do school at home that way. We are definitely rooting everyone on to make it through!

My daughter still wants to hold writing implements with a fisted grasp even though she did improve for awhile by using more of a pinch grasp n was using scissors correctly after using squeeze scissors for awhile but now wants to keep grabbing each scissor with each hand ( like hedge trimmers). Her writing n tracing is improving n she is spelling n reading some at 6. Braylee's writing/tracing is impressive. My daughter gets upset like that too. Especially now with virtual/home learning n when too many demands are being put on her or she doesn't get a break in between classes or activities. Sometimes we just have to log on to a class a few minutes late to let her decompress. I love how u stop filming when she has a meltdown or just gets upset. It's hard for me to watch my daughter get upset or Braylee get upset,let alone being able to film it. I'm glad u guys look at it the way u do-show/talk about the good n bad but don't cross certain lines.

Braylee is working so hard! A suggestion to practice letters and get in some sensory stim at the same time, is to use salt or sand on a sheet tray, and let her make her letters and numbers by tracing with her fingers. Pudding is also good, and bonus points for licking your fingers!

I would suggest a smaller pencil, shes holding it correctly but it’s top heavy so that’s also why she’s holding it so far up. Like a golf pencil or one from ikea. You can also highlight the lines or box it so visually she sees it better to stay inside the lines We use hand writing without tears also, it’s amazing. we do a letter weekly and make craft along with it. AND YES! Pluto is a planet

Good job on practicing letter writing! The way she holds the pencil is common for kids that start writing. To make it easier and get her used to holding the pencil right you can use a triangle shaped pencil or add a ‘pencil grip’. (You can find them on amazon). Specially the ‘BIC kids triangle-beginners-pencils’ are great. ❤️
@TheWeeFamily

We are still working on tolerating grips. Her fine motor skills are at about a 5 year old level right now. She is able to write more legibly, it’s unfortunately a skill that has regressed. But we will look at those as we work on it 🙂

Great Job! I had an idea that Braylee might like as far as learning about the solar system. You could (or Braylee) cut out and color the planets and then put them out on the floor. She could jump from one to the other while you learned facts. That would make the learning way more "active" and unique. I might also recommend a globe with raised terrain (I can't remember what they are called but they give great sensory input) or an inflatable earth beach ball. I don't know if these ideas are any good for Braylee but they might help someone else out there! Keep up the hard work!

Play dough for letters with curve lines... start with pattern to pattern, then imitation and on her own... play on the floor more and you can also do other play activities or academics... Also, draw a frame to let her know or give her an idea where to start her letter💐hope it helps🧸

When I was her age, I filled out an entire worksheet with random words even though I was only supposed to practice writing my full name. My older Nephew still has problems with reading despite his love for science and mathematics and his younger brother's progress has yet to be seen. I have been writing and making charts since I was three years old since writing is an effective way to relieve anxiety, which may lead to erratic behaviors if left untreated. I have in speech therapy since I was two years old. Medications like the amphetamines that I was prescribed when I was 7 years old and the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors and antipsychotics that I was prescribed from 9-14 years of age affect academic progress as amphetamines and antidepressants are known to cause psychotic behaviors in children. I hated middle school and that made me have to relearn its mathematics in tenth grade, when I took geometry although I did well in Algebra I and the first half of Algebra II. Perhaps Braylee may be dyslexic. If she likes to cut, perhaps she is a kinetic learner. I am a visual learner and perhaps my nephew is a kinetic learner due to his energy, his medications suppress his appetite.
@priscillafrye2951
@priscillafrye2951 4 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree that stimulants and antidepressants commonly cause psychotic behaviors in children. They should obviously be prescribed thoughtfully and non-medication therapies used too. Many of my friend's children benefitted a lot from those medications.

Braylee prob finds handwriting very boring, she prob can't grasp th need for it. I know there are neurological benefits to practicing handwriting but with all the technology today, she can do lots of writing without being good at handwriting. Once again, Braylee's speech leaps ahead with every video. She says new words all the time and is very understandable. I know some of the speech is "parroting" but that is important learning just the same, I'm sure it builds her communication skills. Hey, I know everyone's always recommending stuff for Braylee, you guys probably get sick of it:). But, I just thought - what about learning tools used by blind kids? I think they use paper with embossed lines for handwriting? And I'm sure they have models of the solar system etc for science. I could see Braylee really digging that stuff and enable her to learn by touch too.
@TheWeeFamily

Handwriting is a skill that she used to be much better at but as we work and focus on other things has regressed. She doesn’t need it at this point but may someday and with staying home it was just a good thing to do to work her brain as she didn’t seem to be getting the same stimulation and brain working the way she would at therapy full time as she was home. Oh definitely her speech is improving and at the current developmental stage that she is age the repeating is pretty standard and it’s a great start. 🙂

Go, go Braylee! Do you feel comfortable using library books with B? If so, I think some of the libraries have where you can order online and do a pick up. I have been doing that for myself at the Eagan library (we don't live in Eagan, but hubby works there) since I am addicted to reading. Wee school looks fun tho. And its true, we all learn stuff we do not want to, but putting a spin on it to make it fun sure does help. Glad to see you are all healthy and as happy as you can be during this time. At least the rest of the week and into the weekend should be beautiful for us Minnesotans.
