It will. Plus you'll get charge sockets on lampposts wherever there's street parking, and car parks will have one for each bay because if everyone's got an EV, then it'll be a money spinner. The panic about charging infrastructure is entirely manufactured. Such an easy fix.

@@mattnicholas9842 It absolutely will not cost that much and it absolutely will not take decades. This stuff is way less complicated than the fossil fuel supply chain. Every building in the country already has a power connection. We just build a little more on top of existing infrastructure. And given how much it'll save the country on oil imports, the investments will pay for themselves many times over. It'd be financial madness NOT to do it.

A Mulitistrada V4S ain't much cheaper, all bikes seem to have gone up in price considerably in recent years, when you take into account the running and maintenance costs it's not that far out of the ball park. I don't expect prices to drop very much being that the battery is the lions share of the cost, demand for lithium is rocketing. There aren't any radical battery technologies that can be mass produced on the horizon, double the range ?, not in the next ten years, maybe never. I think we need to wait another 2 or 3 years to see what Ducati, BMW and the Japanese 4 bring to market, we live in interesting times. I'd have one of these for my 60-90 mile a day commute like a shot, There is a free charger in my work car park, for the moment free fuel, zero road tax and low cost easy maintenance makes quite a compelling case.

Hydrogen fuel cells are an absolute no go for bikes. The power to weight ratio of the system, combined with the horrendous inefficiencies of the energy to motion conversion process, mean these systems are best suited to extremely large vehicles, such as ships. As for synthetic fuels, I don't see them working out as economical either. Even if you leave aside the pollution problem (these systems put out just as much cancer/disease causing pollution as a standard fossil fuel engine), they're so much more expensive to produce and distribute than electricity. You have to use electrolysis to produce the fuels, so you immediately lose a whole bunch of energy to wastage, and then you have to distribute the liquid fuel around in pipelines and tankers. Much more efficient to use that electricity for charging BEVs instead, and it can be distributed around the nation using wires much more quickly. The distribution network for fuel relies on ubiquitous demand. Give it ten years, when all new cars are battery EVs, and the demand for fuel is dropping significantly, you'll see filling stations going out of business. Whilst it is theoretically possible that access to fuels will remain legal, the price is going to be very high because the volume demand isn't there anymore, and the distribution system won't be nearly as comprehensive. The issue with BEVs right now is simply the cost. You could make a 300 mile range motorcycle now but it would cost £50k, and everyone knows there's no market for that. As more capacity comes on stream, the price of cells will continue to fall, and you'll be able to get a bike like this for cheaper than its ICE equivalent, because when batteries are being produced in such volumes as to service a global passenger vehicle market of 100 million units per year, the cost of a battery for a motorcycle will be far lower than the cost of an engine. It's just a matter of time. What we want right now is brands like Energica mastering things like weight distribution, handling, brakes, suspension, so that when batteries' cost achieves price parity and then falls below ICE, we'll get a flood of models on the market that retain the engineering heritage that has given us a great riding experience.

No man electric doesnt have to mimmic what you are used .. .. commuting is hardly over 100mile a day .. and easy cheap charging at home ... i m in !!! Very low maintanance .. and through my company half price ...

Anybody who ever ever watched a ytub vid .... they know waisting 40 min is nothing :-)... and easy overnight charging at home or campsite doesnt sound like a hassle

Makes me wonder if the energy a person uses sat watching the cinema or phone charging,lighting, drinking coffee etc and all the power consumed sat waiting around should be included in the power consumption figures. Petrol users just mainly fill up and go using minimal power consumption.

Thanks Paul, I used to think price would come down as more people moved over, but I just don’t think that’s the case now. As demand and components prices increase, the overall cost will only ever go up sadly - same with almost everything nowadays. Range will improve, but not in the staggering leaps we hope for. The latest few years has seen much smaller increases in technology in EV’s, so until there are big developments there I don’t see range doubling for example. It’s all about people changing their mindset to how they travel, as you rightly say. I don’t think this is something we need to worry about too much in the biking world… yet, but for sure in private cars.

@@teapotone I think you'll enjoy it so long as you take it for what it is. If you can plan some decent places to stop and aren't in a hurry electrics aren't so bad. The problems come when you want to go long distances in a decent time but if you're doing a feet-up and relax type ride with plenty of spare time they aren't bad. I wonder how many bike museums there are or similar things? Things like that are perfect for electrics because you are going to spend an hour in there anyway so if you plan your ride around things like that all should be well. Having been around the world and knowing how to deal with it won't hurt, either. I can't help thinking how much less stress it would be on my old RT though.

I don't understand your claim about only charging quickly over 60%? That is not how it works, the bike recharges the entire battery in about an hour. Roughly 80% in 40 minutes (the fastest part of the charging). We own two Ribelles and we often just plan a lunch stop for recharging (2-3 hours riding before lunch, 1 hour charging while we have lunch, and 2-3 hours riding back home).

Yeah I think maybe Si has the wrong end of the stick there regarding quick charging over 60%. All Electric vehicles get the quickest charge between 20-80%, the last 20% and particularly the last 10% are what take the significant time as the system balances the battery and all the ‘magic stuff’ 🤷‍♂️ (it’s beyond me, I don’t understand it, I just know this last bit takes the longest). This is why manufacturers always tout their recharge times for 20-80% as it’s the quickest - but it’s also the best way to ride and electric bike. If you keep the battery between 20-80%, then you can just give it a quick charge whenever you stop near a charger and that will top the battery off for your days ride. When you get home you plug it into an AC charge (via your homes 3-pin plug) and this will balance everything out in the battery and keep it operating at an optimum level. You can’t continually charge via DC as it will reduce power output down to around 75% before levelling off - I believe they recommend every 4-6 charges is done via AC to balance the systems.

@@teapotone Just to clear this up I meant 20%-80% is 60% of the battery. So its only charging quickly over 60% of its capacity - not above 60% charge state.

This notion of "the infrastructure" being in place...presumably you are familiar with electricity being available in every home and business throughout the country? You can do overnight charging anywhere with a three pin plug, and fast charging with a box that costs no more than £200 to install, and which blanket the country already - download zap map for your phone and see for yourself. It's a myth that the infrastructure isn't already there.

@@grumpsrides6074 That's not really a thing... the EU standard is everywhere. In Europe is not like USA, where everyone except Tesla use the same connector (but still has the biggest infrastructure). There are a very few cases of cars who have the Asian standard (CHAdeMO), but they are not sold anymore, and basically every charge point has at least the Type 2 or CCS. In practice: if there is a charge point, you can charge.

@@grumpsrides6074 As has been pointed out to you Grumps, and as I said myself if you'd read my comment properly, there are fast charging boxes everywhere throughout the UK. I myself have ridden all over Northern Ireland, and also from Birkenhead through the Pennines to Sheffield, and from Norwich through the Midlands back to Birkenhead. I charged in lots of different places, often for free. Any Lidl car park has them. You seem to have done some research about the situation in 2014 and not updated your information. Everywhere uses CCS now.

I'm in a similar situation to you Ray; even with 2 diginow fast chargers in my Zero DSR's tank, it still takes 50 mins or so to go from 20-80 on a road trip. I'm in New Zealand and the number of chargers around is roughly keeping up with the number of EVS, so infrastructure isn't a real problem here. But that price?! Maybe there'll be a few secondhand ones kicking around in a couple of year's time? My only reservation with Energicas compared to the Zeros is chain and gearbox maintenance and noise; I would really miss how quiet and smooth the belt drive is on the Zero, and a huge advantage to EVs for me is no maintenance, so that's a real negative for me. Also, I wonder about the longevity of the brand now they've been bought by Ideanomics; will things get less premium, will Energica's design and ingenuity be stifled, and judging by the massive deflation of their share price, will they become yet another EV maker who goes bust because it's incredibly hard to mass produce EVs and make a profit? I hope not as they're amazing bikes. Enjoy your Zero mate!

😉👍 Sadly I don’t think they’ll ever come down in price bud, just look at the cost of everything else currently ⬆️ It’s going to be a question of making them affordable via HP etc, same as most big bikes these days. For me it’s the infrastructure, I just don’t think any real practical thought is going into it these days to accommodate the huge numbers of cars that are due to switch over to electric within the next decade. Chargers aren’t maintained generally and when you do find one it’s often occupied. How will this work out when most cars are electric? I genuinely don’t see bikes going electric across the board, there will be a lot more of them, but I think petrol will remain the majority, certainly for my lifetime at least 🤷‍♂️ Could be wrong though

@@teapotone I believe that the secret to reasonably priced eMotos is mass production, and that won't happen until governments properly push the big bike makers to switch to electric. By then the biggest current limiter to producing profitable EVs (battery availability) will most probably have been cracked. I think 10 years will do it. Ducati taking over from Energica as the bike supplier for the MotoE race series is a positive step.

I have toured on a Zero DSR, around Ireland and Scotland. With DC rapid charging it is 20 to 30 minutes. And there are more and more multiple charger stations on motorways.

Just had a test ride on the Energica Esse Esse9 today, I really enjoyed the instant acceleration and can't get it out of my head, although I could feel the weight on rough corners it was a fun bike... This Experia seems to be much closer to what I want, more range and a more comfortable riding position... Now if only I could pull £27K together (realistically I need a house of my own first and then a car that's not a 15 year old Citroen scrapyard dodger, but it's fun to dream).

While most charging stations do have a relatively easy charging process, mainly the popular ones, they can be a headache. I think the issue is a lack of standardization. Here in the US, we have Tesla plugs, CCS, J1772 and Chademo - and that's not even counting the different handshakes these stations have to go through for each vehicle. A petrol nozzle doesn't know whether it's in a Toyota or a BMW - these charging stations have to go through a longer step process to deliver the right amount of electricity. Until these plugs and voltages become standard, I think we'll continue to see awkward charging steps.

FYI A number of guys have now ridden across America on Energicas; it's all about the charge speeds :-)

FYI All Energicas have gears. This is unusual for eMotos but many car EVs have gearboxes too.

Interesting topic that, @mancavemoto and I chatted about this in one of the latest episodes of ‘Bru Time’. They’ve pretty much got a blank slate again haven’t they, be interesting to see who really goes for it in terms of design and radicalism 🤷‍♂️👍

I think they will change. I would certainly prefer it. I'm very used to the usual layout but its only that way as a compromise for the clutch lever really. Thats not just electric bikes, either. I see no reason other than to appease the knuckle draggers why the DCT bikes don't have a hand rear brake. Foot controls never really made sense - its just that with a lot of things to control you run out of digits and need something else to make the numbers up.

I have a bike with drum brakes front and rear. I can't imagine that rear drum with a cable on it ! It's bad enough with a heavy foot and a steel bar operating it. Maybe that's where it all started with being foot operated.

@@chrishart8548 When I started riding that was the norm. Discs were only for the techy stuff. The only advantages with the bar/rod arrangments were ease of production and longevity over cables. If you want more mechanical advantage that just means changing where the holes are drilled and how long the rods are. Mechanical (all) rear brakes are set up deliberately so they are harder to press because your foot is much less subtle than your hand and if you're not daft its usually in a dirty great boot too. That means its pretty easy to over do it and lock up - especially in dodgy conditions - so they tend to get designed either with very low power like sport bikes or with a lot of effort needed to make them work like cruisers.

@@siraff4461 my back brake is good lucky it has abs so I know when I'm asking to much of it. That's with a modern bike with a disk and ABS.

You'll be fine at 5'9; my friend's 5'4 and she struggled but managed to ride it.

Hi Thierry, I genuinely didn’t feel the bike was high seated at all, although it obviously is going by seat height figures. My best advice would be to test ride one, go to the Energica website and find a distributor close to you where you can test ride one and see for yourself 👍

Very true. If you do fancy an EV but are worried about the environmental impact, one option is to buy a secondhand one as there is then no impact from producing the vehicle in the first place; that's why I bought my electric motorbike secondhand. Also, if you've got piles of cash (I certainly haven't!) you could buy a Tesla as they are immediately negative impact from day 1, as the company's squillions of solar panels have generated more green energy than all of the energy used to create every car they've ever made, plus all of the energy ever used to charge all of their cars at Tesla superchargers.

Don't be too sure about that. The cost of these bikes, especially the batteries makes them ripe for the back alley parts market. Give it a few years and there will be people out there who won't want to pay through the nose for replacement parts and you'll see a similar problem that's currently happening with E-bicycles!

Tesla started the same way. Give it time.

Range isn’t a big deal anymore. 120-140 miles of normal energetic riding is ample for the vast majority of people. But recharge time and the infrastructure available to facilitate large-scale use of EV’s en masse is. THAT is going to be the stumbling block next as it currently struggles at todays levels in places. Price won’t come down, they’ll come out with various credit options to make it more affordable but the actual price won’t reduce by much in my opinion.

@@teapotone Which will make it unaffordable for those on lower incomes who want to tour (Not everyone can afford the monthly payments) This is likely to make touring on a bike the preserve of the well off. The rest of us plebs can walk and cycle to work or use the chaotic public transport systems outside London and the SE. 😡
