This week we found out that neither of the main party leaders have good chat, and my god was it painful to find out.
We're chatting PMQs, and Keir Starmer's campaign to undermine the Tories on the right. We also consider who the SNP would issue their first fatwa on, after Rishi Sunak compared them to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Finally, we take a look at the proposals to overhaul the UK's sex education curriculum.

The Rwanda policy isn't an example of Newspeak it's actually a textbook example of Double-think. Proponents of the idea are supposed to hold two incompatible truths in their head simultaneously when thinking about Rwanda: namely that the country is somewhere safe and yet equally it's somewhere so awful that it will act as a deterrent. Just popped over from the podcast feed to get that off my chest. Please carry on with the good work.
@Auriflamme
@Auriflamme 22 күн бұрын
Well it's true, but on a technicality. Rwanda is considered to be the safest country in Africa and one of the safest countries in the world. But if it were so good, wouldn't refugees be streaming there in droves? The safety claim is a red herring since low crime is only one determining factor in the desirability of a country alongside language, community, economy, geography, etc. And apart from anything else, there are no guarantees that Rwanda isn't going to turn around and abdicate their responsibilities towards the deportees, or allow them to fall into the hands of people trafficers.
@annoloki
@annoloki 21 күн бұрын
Is it double think, or is it just lying? But it's like this weird kind of lying, where it's not a lie that's particularly meant to be believed, it's very playground-bully... like "stop hitting yourself", it's part of the power thing, they win by dragging you in to arguing against something that nobody even believes... so the bully shows his friend, "hey watch this..." goes up to the victim "stop hitting yourself!" and the friend laughs "oh yeah, hey, why are you hitting yourself". Like stealing billions of dollars from Venezuela and telling them to "stop doing socialism to yourself", and the more recent examples of "stop genociding yourself" and "why are you shredding your own charter, UN?". You can probably find in their childhood a violent parent telling them "this hurts me more than it hurts you". Being truthful implies a level of respect that bullies, by definition, do not have for their victims.

I know Ollie was probably playing devil's advocate, but civil servants are impartial and unbiased, but we are required to act within the law. If the Government changes the law, we have to follow whatever the new law is. PCS's issue is that if the advice says it's fine to continue issuing licences (or to send folk to Rwanda) there's no reason to hide it. More importantly, facilitating illegal actions may make civil servants personally culpable for crimes committed by their Department. So we cannot just take it at their word that something is legal. That would apply if they were trustworthy. Given they aren't there's even more reason to want to see absolute proof that the action is legal before we facilitate it.

The English Civil War is another part of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, and if I remember correctly in Scotland generally we do the parts of those wars associated with the Conventeers and Cromwell's New Model Army incursions into Scotland if we study that period. The True Levellers and Winstanley are great to study though.

I was ignorant and clueless and could have done with some kind of advice about keeping yourself safe, or knowing how to say No to what you don't want. There def needs to be some kind of basic Sex and Relationship guidance at some point, even for religious schools in fact especially for them.

The selling arms to Israel argument is similar to the Tory argument about leaving the ECHR and introducing a UK Human Rights act. It would be possible in the future for a Government to amend that act and take away our rights.
@EdJames-tb9oz
@EdJames-tb9oz 22 күн бұрын
It would actually be in massive breach of domestic UK law to leave the ECHR. The UK and every other signatory has removed all laws concerning the rights granted by the ECHR from the statute book and underpinned UK law in the ECHR for those rights and have passed domestic law that prohibits copying over the rights into domestic law. If a country leaves they have to rewrite all those rights from scratch after leaving. The UK designed it that way so it would be insane to leave. It's a measure to stop the rise of someone like Hitler again. One of those rights is the right to life. If you leave the ECHR you actually invalidate every law concerning murder. For everyone in the country. The UK and the other founders of the ECHR designed it that way. Also as a byproduct scrapping that right alone would also result in a automatic loss of the UN security council seat.
@annoloki
@annoloki 21 күн бұрын
The practice would be, yes, but the reality of what the government is hiding is more down to the fact that the legal system has a massive Palestine sized hole it in, due to the refusal to recognise the existence of Palestine as a nation state, so all the laws that apply to the protection of foreign nationals simply don't apply... sop, for example, when David Cameron refuses to answer the question of whether Gaza is "occupied territory", saying things like "well I'm not a lawyer"... the assumption is that he knows very well that it is, but this is incorrect, as occupied territory is when one sovereign state asserts authority over the territory of another sovereign state, so refusal to recognise the existence of Palestine as a nation state precludes the territories being considered "occupied territory" in law. Israel also calls it "disputed territory", also because it doesn't recognise the existence of Palestine in law. They would have a very hard time defending their refusal to recognise Palestine if people understood what not doing so lets them get away with... as long as they don't travel to one of the 140+ nations that do recognise Palestinian existence. So this is what they don't want people to know.

The long "s" (that looks like "f") is just an "s"... The "normal s" was used if at the end or start of a letter because it takes more space. And old scripts stoke size was rigidly defined. It was still used in European printing into 1900s, because it saved space. There is also variant of "k" where the < is at the top. Reason for this was that when writing with a quill the angle and direction of stroke is extremely limited and downstroke is the easiest and most consistent, 2nd easiest is the left-to-right diagonal stroke upwards. So for convinience the letters were broken down to down strokes and diagonal upward strokes. These same practices just moved to print.

7:46 “an _F_ like an _S…_ ” _Edit:_ Oh, *Ollie* got to it a bit later. 11:07 Well, here’s some info about it, anyway. It’s the _long s*_ or the _medial s_ or _initial s._ It looks like the lowercase _f_ but it _is_ an _s._ The rules for using it (or _not_ using it) were pretty complicated, e.g., not using the long s at the end of a word ("success" becomes "ſucceſs") and not using the long s before an _f_ ("transfuse" becomes "transfuſe"). It wasn’t like the _long s_ was some kind of special case, so why use it? It was more like the regular lowercase _short_ or _round s_ was, i.e., used in places where the _long s_ “shouldn’t” be used, according to the rules. It dropped out of favor in the US and Great Britain/the UK by between 1790 and 1810. An evolved form of the _long s_ survives today as the slash [/]. *It’s a _long s,_ not because of the sound (as _Ed_ makes a hissing sound)-it was pronounced identically to the _short s_ -but just because of its elongated shape.

34:36 To be fair to Sunak (and boy am I loathe to say that), Britain doesn't in fact sell weapons or munitions to Israel. What we do export, however, are sensors and components for use in platforms such as the F-35 and drones, self-defensive countermeasures and other secondary military goods. Whilst selling any military technology to a regime currently on trial for genocide is a moral outrage, there is a level of nuance that is relevant. Unlike the US who, until recently, had been providing shipments of 2000lb bombs amongst other munitions, Britain can reasonably claim to be offering, at least in practical terms, only limited and indirect military assistance to Israel, despite the clear moral peril.
