Just a quick test of flying past a star while at warp.

I noticed that you've made a great many improvements to the bridges' overall design. It looks a lot better already.

Thanks :) I was never fully satisfied with the original design, and this new one feels so much nicer, especially the rear and side sections. As soon as the current build we're working on is complete I'll be making a new dev update video showcasing all the new rooms and game systems.

I agree! Personally, I would do away with the "warp cloud" effect and just show the stars and planets flying past in the distance...

So, I've got a physics question. How should things look, if we're travelling faster than the light particles/waves that allow them to be seen? In War Thunder, there's an effect that shows a neat attention to detail. When your jet is flying faster than Mach 1, you can hear your engines roar when the camera is positioned behind the jet, but when you swing it around to the front, the engine noise goes silent. Similarly, I'm wondering if there shouldn't be some sort of similar visual effect here, although we need to take the warp field into account. The speed of light (through a vacuum) is constant, regardless of the light source's velocity. We can assume for simplicity's sake that the warp field acts as its own little bubble of spacetime, and that light inside that bubble behaves "normally" relative to other things in that bubble (eg. you can see the ship's running lights even at warp). So I think we only would need to consider how to handle the external light from stars. I would think that the magnitude of the starlight from the hemisphere ahead of the ship would increase proportionally to the speed of the ship, whereas anything in the hemisphere behind the ship should be utterly black. Thoughts?

If we were sticking completely to real physics, then in all honesty I doubt you'd see anything beyond the event horizon of the warped space. Or perhaps the lensing effect would be so intense it would be a mess of light patterns. I'd be fascinated to see that modelled mathematically for real. Another point is the ship currently moves at around 10,000,000C, which sounds mental but is still fairly slow in galactic terms. At that speed the red/blue shift would be intense, perhaps so intense that the light from stars would be so far into IR/UV that they'd not be perceptible to human eyesight. Red/Blue shift is already present in the warp effect, but it would be interesting to apply that to stars as well to see how they look. I'll look into it :)

@@StarshipSimulator Yeah, it's totally not a demand or anything; obviously it's a game before it's a "realistic" FTL sim (😆). I just can't help but wonder if the effect would end up being amazing, similar to that mathematically-rendered black hole in Interstellar. :)

@@sandwiched Funnily enough I was picturing the same scene. Really heavily lensed patterns of light bending around the ship :)

I still prefer streaking stars, like those seen in Star Trek TNG. The warp effects in films and tv series these days are not as good looking as what they once were.
