I am a retired low mileage 2009 D-2500 Cummins owner ... typically I drive about 1200 miles per year towing my buddies 14" aluminum skiff to go fishing .. about 120 miles round per trip. I do pull out that dip stick before we go and always wonder, when should I change that oil & filter? Mileage isn't the issue .

My husband changes oil in his 2015 Ram Laramie about every 5000 to 6000 miles and records it. He uses Mobil1 full synthetic and a high quality filter. He says he settled on that number just watching how dirty the oil looks. He drives 1/2 highway, 1/2 city. He said tell you thanks for all the really great videos you've been making for DIYer's like him !!

The best "guarantee" you can get is a regular oil and filter change. Suppose you change every 5,000 miles and your oil and filter cost $50.00. You can drive your vehicle 100,000 and it will take 20 changes. 20 X $50.00 = $1,000.00 No car company I know will guarantee their engine will last 100,000 miles for $1,000.00.

Hello David . Great video. I am old school on oil change 3,000 miles (cheep insurance) . My 2014 ford works on the light system. The biggest problem I see going with the 5,000 to 10,000 oil change is the oil filter. They are smaller and smaller that seems like a big problem waiting to happen. Especially when running a turbo. The cleaner the better. I also think that dealers see it as way to find other big problems with your car or truck. Also it is harder to look at your engine from above with all the plastic covers being used. Keep the videos coming. PFSmith

Hey I have a 2013 jeep wrangler bought it used with 100,000 miles on it ,would it be worth changing the lifters and roller rockers and maybe timing chain components?, I turn wrenches for a living, reman grove and Manitowoc cranes so with the info I got from you I don't think I would have a problem doing it . The jeep runs excellent so far ,did have to put the dorman oil filter bypass on it ,don't know how long it's been running without one, but the oil stays clean no smoke

Having multiple JKs sitting in my driveway, wife and son driving one as well as myself... the light coming on is helpful in getting them to take it in for service vs depending upon their looking at the sticker on the windshield. It would be nice if that algorithm could be modified to more reflect the owners service interval desire.

I bring the car in about 4,000 to 4,500 the algorithm usually shows about 50% oil life remaining. Seems like the industry needs to develop a oil life sensor than measures contamination friction and oil clarity. With all the sensors on cars and miles of wiring I wonder why a oil pan level sensor has not been installed to throw a 1 quart/liter low light on the dash unless selling replacement engines is part of the business model.

Since the 80s, I have used mobile 1 oil and Purolator oil filters. I change my oil once a year. I do not put more than 6000 miles a year on my vehicles, mostly because I commute my motorcycle. However, if my oil starts to get dark, I will change the oil sooner. I have never had an engine oil related failure. I am the guy that checks under the hood, at least Once a month. I am the guy that even changes the brake fluid every three years. I am the guy that rotates his tires.. I do not trust anyone to change my oil for me. I know of three instances that a garage forgot to put the oil in someone’s car after draining. When I change my oil, I open the hood and set the new bottle of oil on top of the engine so I cannot close the hood without putting the oil in the engine after draining. I let the oil drain out of the engine for at least an hour. I wondered how much extra oil would drain out over time once, and I left a clean empty pan under my drain plug overnight once. I got about 12 ounces of extra oil out of that motor by letting it drain overnight. If you take your car into a quick change or a dealership for an oil change. They will drain the oil, and when it stops coming out fast and just drips, they will put the plug back in. They won’t give it more than a minute to drain.I will jack up my truck or car so that the oil will flow towards the drain.. when I remove the oil filter, I clean The area that the oil filter gasket meets. I filled the brand new oil filter with oil before I install it so the engine will not starve for oil for five or 10 seconds while the oil filter fills.. Then there are the promotions by garages.They claim they will do an oil change with filter for $29.99. Then when they get you in there, they will give you the best oil, for $49.99. When you get your bill, you see that not only had they added tax, but they charge you an oil disposal fee, and oil filter disposal fee, a shop materials fee for things like rags that they had to use while changing your oil. So you’re 2999 oil filter change was upgraded to 4999, then you have tax in those other fees, next thing you know, your bill is up over $60, while your car is in there, they try to sell you everything from fan belts, PCV valve, air filter, cabin filter, even if your car only has 6000 miles on it. There are videos on KZfaq exposing places like this, that don’t even change the oil when they charge you for it. Not only that, you didn’t see what kind of oil they put in there. They probably charged for the best, and put in the cheapest. Another thing I dislike about having dealerships or garage is change my oil, at a dealership, it’s probably the least skilled mechanic or maybe even the lot boy that does the oil changes. Because mechanics are on more complicated jobs. And a mechanic wants to make money on bigger jobs like head gaskets, timing belts, air-conditioning repairs. So usually, some kid is changing your oil . If you want or can’t do your own oil changes, I advise people to, find a garage near your home where are you know the mechanic, you trust him, here in Pennsylvania, we must have our vehicles safety inspected once a year. Schedule your inspection if you have yearly state inspections, and have the oil changed at that time at your trustworthy mechanic. Buy yourself some high-quality motor oil of the correct weight, and buy yourself a Purolator oil filter, and ask your mechanic to use your oil and filter after changing the oil. If you don’t have a local mechanic to do this, and you have to take it to a service center, take it to one where you can stand outside of the garage and watch the mechanic to make sure that he drains the oil and that he put in the oil that they’re charging you for. If you take your car to your dealership, they will not let you in the service area to watch, but if you go to one of the places that specializes in tires or exhaust systems, they have see-through windows on the doors and you can watch them through the door. After they change your oil in your car is ready to go, check the oil yourself before you start the car. I’m sure that it Happens hundreds of times a day, across the country,that the mechanic forgets to put oil in the vehicle after draining it. It happens, he gets distracted, another mechanical ask him a question, he’ll get a phone call, he may walk away from your car to go to the bathroom, or eat lunch. Check your oil when they’re done. If you do not drive your car more than 5 miles a day to and from work, condensation that collects inside the engine that ends up in the oil never gets a chance to boil out, these are the toughest miles on an engine and it’s oil. In conditions like this. It is better to change the oil more than once a year. The most corrosive time that your engine is running is right at start up when the engine is cold. Your car engine is water cooled. The cylinders are surrounded by water to cool the engine. The fuel being induced or injected into the motor condenses on the The cold cylinder walls of the combustion chamber, much like humidity does on a cold drink on a warm day.. this fuel condensing on the cylinder walls dilutes lubrication and is actually corrosive. This is why a car That does short trips only may have more engine ware than a car that does long trips and has high mileage. A short trip vehicle also must have more frequent oil changes. One last thing, don’t use additives to your oil. One of the best known additives was STP. A friend of mine since childhood is a petroleum engineer. He told me that STP is nothing but refined raw crude oil before the additives package has been added to it. It thins out like water when it’s warm, and it’s as thick as honey when cold. It is not temperature stable. There’s no polymer package added to it, no anti-friction additives, no anti-foaming additives , No zinc, no phosphorus to give it added film Streghth..There was another popular additive called whynns friction proofing. That product was over 90% kerosene. So just use the best oil, Purolator filters, don’t add additives, and take it to someone you trust if you can’t do it yourself. Change your oil more often if you do short trips only

Up to 20K miles in Europe....Using a true synthetic that is 90% PAO/Ester.10k+ miles is nothing, use a synthetic media filter too. Pop the hood and check it from time to time. Using fake synthetic class III, yeah 10k is a stretch.

Great channel. Great information. You’re appreciated. Quick question please. I bought my 2014 Ram Laramie Longhorn new. I’ve put 33205 km’s on it since. Averaging around 791 km’s per month on it. Yup. Low mileage. I don’t bag on it but here Calgary we definitely have 4 seasons and winters can be quite cold. I’ve always put synthetic oil into it. Dealer servicing. My questions are, should I trust the info that the truck puts out regarding the life of the oil and what are your suggestions as to how often I should change the oil. Thank you.🇨🇦
@MotorCityMechanic

Personally I would stay in the range of 4800-8000km. 8000km is pretty good for synthetic....once it hits 161000km I would change to the 4800km. Thats just my thoughts and what I would do if it was my truck. Thanks for watching and dont forget to subscribe

I have seen major wear issues in Vw Diesel cars because the oil change interval was huge! 120,000 mi and a camshaft needed replacement because people were doing 10,000mi on oil changes, I always do it at max 6000mi, which is about every 3-4 months.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 8 жыл бұрын
+Sicktrickintuner I see internal failures like you mention as well.....mainly the needle bearings in the roller rockers that eventually damage the cam lobes. The mileage interval that we have been using at the shop is 5000 miles on gas engines which I can stand behind.....but nothing higher then that unless its a diesel and then its 7500 miles in my book. The 10,000 mile interval wont work for me at this point because I have seen failures even with 5000 mile intervals so until something chances.....I too will stick at a lower interval. Thanks for the comment!

I got to be honest u r doing the greatest job and simultaneously KEEPING LOYAL MOPAR CUSTOMERS that are biased to mopar products even though there's times when I ask myself "what the hell is Chrysler thinking when let this design go" That can be trying to the point of going Ford or WORST Chevy, But Toyota is has strong appeal and u know why I'm sure. My daughter just bought a 2013 Charger with 153k. I tried to get her down to get the older version but she didn't budge. Needless to say it's making a ticking noise but there's no engine code, oil pressure seems normal, and the tail pipes look okay and doesn't really smell. Any feedback is definitely welcome. Again keep up THE FANTASTIC JOB!!
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 5 жыл бұрын
I assume it has the 3.6 v6 engine.....typical noises on that one is a bad roller rocker arm. The needle bearings fail and can damage the cam shaft lobe. I recommend having it checked and then replace all the lifters and rocker arms on the side making the noise and see if any damage to any of the two cams on that same side. Its a typical thing we find. Other then that its a great engine. 10,000,000 of them on the road and they have good power (almost 300 HP). Thanks for watching and for the question. If she is somewhere in the Georgia/South Carolina area I would be more then happy to check it out.

I just bought a pre owned 2015 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7liter hemi 2wheel drive Lonestar edition with 5,600 miles. I was told at the dealership that the oil was changed when they got it but it is showing me that it is at 25% before change. What type of oil should I use and how often does the oil need to be changed. As a mechanic can you tell me anything about the truck do they have a lot of problems. Or is there anything I need to worry about
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Briana. That year truck and engine combo is an excellent vehicle. There are no real common issues with it. As far as the oil change.....there are 2 possibilities.....one is that someone changed the oil but did not reset the oil change reminder so that could explain the 25%. I would think that they would have placed an new oil change sticker on the upper window stating the next oil change mileage needed. The other possibility is that the oil wasnt changed.....if thats the case then usually the original oil filter from the factory will have written on it......"factory installed". Thats how we can tell if the first oil change was ever done. On to the mileage and oil type. I personally recommend Pennzoil Platinum Plus. Its what we use at the dealership and havent had any issues with it and it holds up great. On a newer vehicle like yours.....I wouldnt go more then 5,000 miles between the oil changes. The ideal mileage to me is 3,000 but I can understand the movement towards 5,000 but nothing higher then that. Over all you will enjoy the truck. Thanks for the questions and for watching the video. Now make sure to subscribe and share the videos with others.

Love these debates, here in the uk we seem obsessed with getting cars on 3 years leases with 18,000 mile service intervals, me I always used to halve the interval - of late I don’t I do a relatively high mileage (highway) and change as per service schedule with weekly checks, currently my VAG brand car says 10,000. The same engine in other VAGs states 18,000 - go figure. Anyhow it makes me itch leaving at 10,000 but after 80,000 miles it seems ok after 100 I will probably halve it. Anecdotally I see a lot of newish cars sat at the side of road in the uk, waiting to be recovered, is this a symptom of just drive it syndrome ?

Do you think that is enough or should it be done more often? Some background- I do not tow much, I have 65k miles total with only about 10k of them towing our 5th wheel. I do spend a good amount of time in Atlanta traffic though. Thanks for your time.

Ben C. I prefer 7500 miles. It's the interval I do mine and that I set my customers trucks with the diesel. It works well being the at 15k the fuel filters are due so basically every other oil change you do the fuel filters. It's what I have found to work best. Thanks for the question. I'm actually located just outside of Augusta Ga so we are basically neighbors lol. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe

Yeah, that "light".... I have a 2008 Challenger. When I first got it, I just drove it in the summer. I'm the second owner, I bought it in 2011. I feel like, oil really must be changed, 5000 miles or 6 months, whatever comes first. Twice a year? I mean, yeah. That's fine... I'm older... Everyone who taught me, preached relentlessly, it's cheap insurance. Oil is cheap. New engines are expensive.... Anyways, I didn't even know the car HAD the light... 3 years in, the light comes on.... I'm like, wtf is that light??? omg, is that telling me I need to change the oil?!?!?!? hahahahahahah! I mean, what if I had just waited?? Over 3 years, between oil changes??? omg... that would NOT be good.... So yeah, don't bet your life on that light.... For me personally, 5k miles, or 6 months, is PLENTY of time to wait.... I'm always amused by people who really think that that light, is somehow "testing" the oil... As David says, it's just an algorithm... It's just math. Run time, time at operating temperature, time spent at high engine loads... Whatever, it just figures all that out, and when the total amount is high enough, it lights the light.... It seems obvious to me, but, look, your car/truck, clearly does NOT have an "oil testing laboratory" built into it... It does not... Ever seen an oil testing lab? It's big... It's a big building, filled with equipment.... that lab does NOT exist under the hood of your truck....

What’s you take in these “bypass” oil filters that are on the market for diesel pickups? Are they really worth the $500? They really keep the oil cleaner then when it’s new as they say?
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 5 жыл бұрын
I have not seen any issues with the lubrication or cleaning of the oil on the diesels. Diesels are dirty by design the oil will always be dark due to the spot. I see it as a waste of money based on experience with these engines and no oil related issues.

If your Diesel is out of warranty use the Fleetguard LF9028. This is an extended service filter that combines, in the same canister, a full flow element and a 5 micron bypass element. I have spoken at length with Cummins filtration and Valvoline personnel and have been assured the combination of LF9028 and Premium Blue Extreme 5W40 is acceptable for 10000mile interval in my 2001 Dodge 3500. I feel comfortable with this interval because several years ago, when Fleetguard introduced the "Strapore" filter media, there was internal communication between Cummins, Chrysler, and Fleetguard over whether to inform owners that 10000mile interval could be advertised with the one caveat that Premium Blue 2000 5W40 and the Stratapore filter be used. Apparently the legal-beagles at Chrysler would not let it fly. This was in the middle 1990s. And my source was a management type at Cummins Northwest in Portland, OR.

Thanks for the video Dave, this was always a question of mine because I could never get a direct answer from different service centers. Another question along the same line is whether or not synthetic blend oil is absolutely needed. I went to a Dodge dealer today for an oil change on my 2014 caravan and I had a dealer coupon to save a few bucks on a regular oil change. They told me they don't even have regular oil anymore and that Chrysler/Dodge vehicles called for at least the partial synthetic mix. Is that correct? So I spent the 40.00 and got the partial mix. Is this just another sales tactic because I don't see why regular oil is no longer being used or kept for those who want it? This happened to me at a small garage last year too, but my other vehicle was 16 yrs old. So I guess people are changing oil at higher intervals and less often, but the trade off is spending more money for each change.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 9 жыл бұрын
John Smith Morning John. Checking the part number on the recommended oil thru mopar for your vehicle doesn't mention anything about being partial blend. A lot of the dealer have bulk oil in large drums and that's where they pump their oil from so that will usually have the 5w-30 and 5w-20 that way. I know that we have the blended oil here at our shop. With the 5000 mile interval that I recommend on the newer vehicles, the blended would work best. And your right....there is a cost/time interval relationship as well. The most costly states that they last the longer. Doing the math means it probably comes out about the same.

@MotorCityMechanic 9 жыл бұрын
Anthony Scira Hello Anthony.....it depends on how long you plan on keeping the vehicle. If almost for ever then yeah. It wont cover everything but mainly the major items. One transmission failure out of normal warranty would justify it. Just depends on length of ownerships and sometimes some warrantys can be transferred or even cashed in if the vehicle is sold. Just need to check more into it,.

Hi Dave....Great channel, I enjoy your videos. Like you, I use to never go past 5K miles between oil changes. When I owned a fleet of diesel trucks, I switched to a particular synthetic oil and filter, pulled oil samples and now change oil @15K to 20K miles depending on sample results. I do the same on my personal vehicles. Once a week, I wash my truck & wifes car, check all fluids and tire pressures. My adult kids just laugh at me and say "why do you do that stuff, you can afford to have it done". I have a personal connection with each vehicle and it gives me the opportunity to see if anything else needs attention. In 40 yrs, I've never had a breakdown and I take my trucks to 200K+ miles. Keep up the good work.

When it comes to engine oil.....on the diesel we use the Mopar bottle stuff and Rotella is the other option. I have no preference on which Rotella however. On differentials I once again use the Mopar products or another company called BG that sells alot of the up sell service kits like coolant flushes....they have their own fluid that we use as well.

hey Dave, have question regarding. 2014 ram promoter 2500 3.0£ ecodeisel hi roof cargo van. this question involves the transmission. recently have issue where the van does not want to go in reverse. works good in d, or m. but does not. want to go into reverse. When shift to reverse the vangives me a message stating shift to neutral. I have taken it to dodge dealer who tells me nothing is wrong. ?????? I took it to a diesel mechanic who told me that the transmission was UNSERVICEABLE???? they explained that the transmission. was designed such that the tech can unscrew a plug insert device and see if there is fluid. see is the device shows wet ..meaning it had fluid. then the started talking bout cylinoids inside the transmission may b bad but only way to tell is open the UNSERVICEABLE transmission replace the rather inexpensive cylinoids. rebuild then transmission?? or I would have to go get new transmission?? they looked and said there was fluid. they said it didn't smell burnt ..they said they did something to van to get it to relearn driving style mileage etc so it had to be the cylinoids? I know this is a rather persnickity vehicle but seriously is any of this possible. relearn ??? UNSERVICEABLE?? nothing wrong? of course I am getting the usual I never seen that before...can you provide a little insight of fact or fantasy regarding the diesel transmission? thank you jojo

I have only had one dealing with this trans and the customer didnt want to do the repair being that it wasnt warranty. The thing is that its basically a manual trans thats controlled automatically so it has a clutch like any other manual trans. I hate this trans because to me its a dangerous. The reason I say this is that I dont like only relying on the e-brake to hold the vehicle when off. You dont have a park gear and cant place it in gear to hold the vehicle as well. Plus its so easy to hit the e-brake release button when getting out the vehicle. Bad...unsafe design in my opinion. The trans takes one type of fluid and its a basic drain and refill. the clutch master cylinder uses one type of fluid and the hydraulic control system uses a type of fluid as well so 3 in total. The trans fluid is the only one that will get serviced over time and its like I mentioned....drained by removing a drain plug and filling it thru another. Another thing is that its not the same 3.0 edo diesel thats in the truck or jeep......yours is a 4 cylinder 3.0 liter, completely different engine. You have the typical manual trans internal parts that could cause a no reverse and then you have the external items that might as well. All internal and external parts can be replaced if you want to rebuild it. Not sure whats cost effective. Just havent had any experience with it and hope to never if I have that option lol

Hey bossman. I just bought a 2014 Dodge Challenger SXT with the 3.6L engine. I was looking over the maintenance schedule and I couldn't find an interval for changing the oil.. My 2006 Dodge Charger with the 3.5L had an interval of every 6,000 or 6 months. Would that be an acceptable interval for this new car? I use fully synthetic oil and the car has 37k miles on it.

Personally I would go every 5k miles. Thats great for rotating the tires as well so you take car of both issues at the same time. The service info states.....never exceed 10k miles and in severe conditions 4k miles. You have room to work with. In the end its up to what you feel it right for your situation. As mentioned....I say 5k if it was mine....6k isnt far off so I could go there as well.

With synthetics and blends, changing oil out every 3K-5K is a giant waste of money since these oils don't break down until around 7K-10K. Checking your oil levels at every fill up, watching your oil pressure and oil temps will give you plenty of chances to see if there is an issue developing and take care of it before breakdown. Preventive maintenance is key to long life of your engine, but overkill does nothing but waste money.
