The only other instance where we would advise a full set is where the vehicle has higher mileage and the failure in one injector can be traced to normal wear and tear due to the high mileage. In that case we would reason that the remaining injectors are approaching the end of their life as well, as they will have been in the engine for the same length of time, but we'd still leave it up to the customer. We'd give them both options and explain the reasoning behind both.

I appreciate your comments and the fact that your so responsive,we also live in a commission based world and the techs get a piece of the action,the other end is the shops that co-sign this by pushing big tickets. I love your quest to arm us with knowlege,I myself am a fan of dealerships,from my own experience,there's alot of good and bad shops across the board.dealership or independent.

One good thing you can do is to get a decent OBDII plug in code reader. I have an Edge so I can read the codes. Get the code, plug it into google, and then follow some of the links on forums specific to your vehicle. When I had an injector go, I had the code saying injector failure. Found a very close shop that specialized in GM first, they knew which injector. Then they sent me on to a shop a bit further down the road specializing in the Cummins. That shop was superb. Those two shops always referred customers back and forth. Fixed while I waited. One injector. That was well over a 100000 miles ago and all the other injectors work just fine. So get that code reader. You don't have to know a thing about fixing it, but you can know what it is the onboard computer is telling you.

At cummins the #1 reason we replaced all injectors was due to excessive black smoke or excessive regens. #2 water in fuel issue. Hard start or low rail pressure usually easy to diagnose, rarely requires all six.

I found this vid. In the pile seemingly never ending performance vids and articles all saying always replace all 6 in an 06 cummings... So I lost number 2. On a truck I bought new with 8 miles on it. It currently sits on 130 thousand. I have got fuel all over the western states. But 90 percent comes from one local gas station. Now I do use cans a lot since this is my hunting ,travel ,camping pickup. But I have wrenched on big diesels for a long time. And was a locomotive mechanic for a decade or so. With some truck experience on certian engines. We would swap out one injector all the time on those motors. Never would a guy who.makes his living with his dump truck want every injector replaced before he knew they were bad. Who wants to run that truck for a week and a half for free to pay for somthing that ain't broke. So this vid really reassured me nothing's changed on this oil burner compared to those. I will ohm them then have them flow tested. Add some better filtration and monitor them with incab monitor. See what happens

While every video regarding a Cummins and diagnosis and repair that you make is very informative and educational this one may be one of your best and didn’t actually teach anyone a damn thing about their truck so much as the knowledge to know if they are getting bent over or not. I’ve been working on and driving diesels for 30 years. You NEVER replace all the injectors when only one fails. Good info man!!

Thank for the good informational Videos. Maybe this is not a good place to tell this story so if not just ignore this. I have a story, 2019 ram 6.7 put DEF in fuel tank, (has push button start) did not start or press the accessory button. I had called the diesel garage and the are the ones that told me not to start the truck or press anything that would engage the electrical system. When the tow truck driver pressed the accessory button to lower the power window on the drivers side to steer the truck while pulling it onto the tiltbed. I was a little surprised when he did this but though well I guess he knows that he's doing. The truck was moved to the diesel shop where they drained and flushed the tank and started the engine, it ran for and minute then stopped and couldn't get it started again. In all honesty the last conversation I had with the diesel shop was they were working with information that the truck had not been started or any accessories touched. The diesel shop gave me an estimate of $1,8000.00 to bring in back to life. I wanted a second opinion so I had it moved to a dealership. They drained the tank replaced replaced the lift pump, filters, and I think the high pressure pump and maybe the fuel rail. Runs like it never happened, but was hard to start a couple of times and the engine light has come on three times, with a code saying low fuel pressure and cyclinder 3 low volts. First time they changed fuel filters and said they were pretty cloged up with debris, second time same filters but not as cloged, third time filters clean. Light is on again and they want to change all injectors, I asked why not just change just the one showing the number 3 low volts. Anyway they are giving me two qoutes, between 1 or 6 injectors. The truck runs so good I don't understand why 6 injectors. Iguess I feel like if I choose to replace one injector I am taking a chance that maybe the rest might decide go bad at a latter time. The truck run great just the way it is. Thanks

To replace one injector costs a lot on a 6.0 Powerstroke, a lot has to be removed, if you have a lot of miles on your vehicle, it makes sense to replace them all and upgrade the high oil pressure, dummy rail, and plugs, etc, So it boils down to your vehicle's mileage. There is so much labor involved for just one injector, you are better off replacing them all, depending on the miles you have. Now I am talking about the 6.0 Powerstroke.

Add caveat to that… high pressure fuel pump failure requires all six to be replaced. Along with rail, lines, lift pump HPFP, sensors, regulator and filters.

David, Your video's have been very helpful since purchasing my 2015 Ram 3500 6.7. ....? For you is while (first start up for the day coolant temp at 125 - 185.) accelerating it happens at at a 2nd red light 1/2 mile to 2miles from home 3 - 4 times a week. Issue is a pause, delay, or hesitation at point of acceleration from about 1/2 second after pressing accelerator lasts just a split second. .....I noticed Geno's Garage offers a ( Throttle Sensitivity Booster ). Pedal lag. ......Is this my problem and fix and is this a common issue with 6.7L. Can I........just live with it or is something I need to address? ....had to replace rear Nox 2 sensor module about three weeks ago. Mechanic said it could have been causing the problem and may fix it. Wrong! Thanks, Jeff

Hmm 🤔 one thing you didn’t mention was mileage on the injectors. If you have one injector go out on a Cummins with 200k miles, wouldn’t you go ahead and replace them all? A bad injector can take out a piston easily and then the 3k for a set of injectors is relatively cheap compared to a full rebuild. Thinking out loud because I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500, a 5.9 Cummins with a little over 200k miles. I’m considering a full injector replacement and capable of doing the job myself, so no mechanic or business is influential to my decision. The truck runs perfectly but knowing that injectors last an average of 200k depending on many factors. I have factory fuel filtration but replace the fuel filter every oil change, 7-8k miles. Stock truck with bolt on Banks Ram air, 4” exhaust from turbo back and Edge Juice with attitude tuner. The replacement would be preventive maintenance as far as I’m concerned. I’m a CNC machine tool service engineer and not a mechanic but it makes perfect sense to me. Your video doesn’t mention any of the horrors that a bad injector can cause so it didn’t change my mind about replacing my injectors as a set before they fail, because they will fail. This is my daily driver and I need it dependable. Great video though, I just disagree with your train of thought about this.

Making sure that the fuel filter gets changed regularly is very important. The trans is the weak point always. Making sure that the bands are adjusted properly (both of them) at each trans service is very important on an automatic trans.

Stock OE Bosch injectors are only about $500 for a set of 6 shipped with new tubes for a 6.7 ...I mean if I got 150-200k on my truck and I got shitty injector I'm just going to put 6 new ones in why I have it apart ... thankfully anyone with an IQ above 85 can do injectors on a 5.9 or 6.7 so it's $500 job for anyone wants to do the Job in their driveway.

Howdy! Another great video! I have 223k on the truck, bought it with 194k, it's a 2012 ram 2500 w/6.7. I have been running BG products in the fuel, I have had the best results with that cleaner in even my gas engine vehicles. At what point should a person pull the injectors and have them replaced or professionally cleaned? I have heard ppl getting 400k out of the stock units, so wondering if that is generally a true statement. I have seen some videos of people tearing them down and cleaning, but I can't find an actual rebuild kit for these injectors. Love the vids!
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
There is no real mileage where its recommend to remove and clean them/rebuild them. Personally I say no need unless your having issues. BG is a company that we use everyday when it comes to servicing vehicles. I say keep doing your basic maintenance and make sure you have good clean fuel and you should be find except for those rare failures that are out of your control . Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe!

Personally what I like to do on mechanical injectors on the earlier 5.9's is have them cleaned and POP checked and set as close to the same pressure as the strongest injector. Cylinder balance is easy to screw up if your mechanical injectors are high mileage and you replace only one without cleaning and setting injector POP on the remaining 5. The old mechanical injectors usually don't just wear out even with contamination. These injectors typically are much more tolerant of foreign particles in my experience. The only time I have seen the older injectors replaced is when something fractures or the nozzle or pintle overheats.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 8 жыл бұрын
+vais3 when it comes to the common rail diesels.....that's when they seem to have issues narrowing down which one is at fault. I fully agree with your statement on the older mechanical injectors for sure. I hear from viewers where diesel shops tell them that your lucky to get 150k miles out of a set of injectors. I'm not sure where that info came from but it just doesn't hold true. Thanks for the added info and hope you have a great Father's Day

Not a common issue that I have seen. Typically injector codes are electrical. I have seen the valve cover gasket cause issues (gasket has the injector harness/wiring made into it). I have also seen loose injector wiring nuts. Both are possibilities. I recommend having diag performed to see what it might be.....the parts can be expensive so I rather you not replace anything yet with out getting it checked. Thanks for the comment and make sure to subscribe.

Thanks for the advice. I took my 07 6.7 Cummins to a so-called reputable shop and they wanted $5100 to replace the injectors and associated parts. Said "the injectors are bad." Didn't test the fuel system for contamination or do any real diagnosing. I left and paid the $99 "diagnostic" fee. Still on the search for someone to help, no one seems willing to really diagnose anything. Any tips for locating the bad injector? I've tried measuring exhaust temps, but my sticking injector is so randomly intermittent that it's hard to nail down.

If I suspect an injector issue, I remove all 6 and send them to a semi-local company called Antrim Diesel. They are a certified Bosch reman injector facility, and they will test the injectors and send a printout for them, for a nominal fee. I just sent my own injectors out a few weeks ago for testing, and 4 were bad, of which 1 was locked up, and two were perfect OEM spec. So I bought 4 injectors. $40 per to test, and the $40 cam off the replacement price of each replacement injector. I recommend Antrim, at least for my Mid-Atlantic area.

Everyone has their opinions but as a 15 year diesel and heavy equipment tech I can say to many times have I seen the customers cheap out and buy just the failed injector or two. I always recommend a set due to I have been back to countless machines and trucks putting the remainder of injectors in due to us only replacing the one of two that faild. I run a freightliner m2 service truck with 2018 6.7 isb, I lost the #2 and #5 hole two days ago. I replaced both injectors and today 2 days later I lost #4 so I am replacing the set at this point. Diesel is not contaminated as I sent off a sample to be analyzed. I do not sell parts and when I do it's at cost so there is no benefit to me replacing one or six. I have however replaced just one or 2 and been fine but also have done just one or two then went back for the rest. I work remotely average day is 200 to 300 miles at 2 bucks a mile and 135hr, can you imagine how mad the customers are when they just do the one that failed then I'm traveling back again to do the rest! That is way more costly then just doing all six at once. I know I'm ranting but don't S#&+ on the guys that are informing customers they could have further issues down the line and honestly trying to prevent further headache down the road. I work on all brands on and off road and may have some experience with this kind of thing.

So just had my alignment done at the dealer on my 16 Ram 3500 dually mega cab because my front left tire was wearing really bad. Anyway dealer told me that I need my injectors serviced. I tow a 20k# trailer nearly every day and have 32k on the truck. Are they full of sh!t or is this normal? Also what does this service entail?
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 7 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a regular service that they are promoting. Much like a tire balance or brake fluid change. Its not something that is required but doesnt hurt either. I see it more being uses on higher mileage trucks...not as early as yours. We have a special set up that attaches to the lines coming and going to the engine and then it runs only on the cleaner. Hardest part is hooking up the lines. I have used it a few times to actually fix a few vehicles. At this time....I dont think its needed.

I completely agree with you, but you should have mentioned motors with high mileage, that haven't seen diesel additives, or good clean fuel. Injectors can lose their effectiveness over time due to their constant cycling. But overall I agree with you, "your motor has a miss, soo were gonna put in a new motor"? Fixes the problem, just not cost effectively! Lol

Very true. Its the approaching of the customer that I have an issue. I feel you should tell them the exact issue and then options can be given and they can make the final decisions if they want just the one or all. Too many shops dont give that option and just say it needs all. There are legitimate reasons but they need to be honest and not to just cover up the fact that some techs cant check it further. I have one in the shop know waiting on parts.......took longer then the usual diag but eventually found that the #5 injector was bad. I cant imagine being on the opposite side of the counter and being told I need $4,000 to get my truck back on the road. $4,000 isnt easy to come by. Thanks for taking the time to comment and for giving me your feedback. Make sure to subscribe and keep watching!

I subscribed to your channel within the first 5 minutes. I thoroughly enjoyed your explanation, and I have the same feelings about just "throwing parts" at the problem. I'm not the fastest in the world, but I've got an extremely loyal following, and they've been with me for most of my 20 years as an independent shop. Some will go, but when they feel like they aren't getting treated right, they always come back. I find that even if they don't have a clue as to what your explaining to them, they at least appreciate the effort! Thanks, and keep doing what your doing!!!

MotorCity Mechanic, Carl here, I've got a possibly silly question for you. Customer brings in 06 d1500 5.7 hemi complaining of occasionally dying when creeping to a stop, pulled codes, only has p0404 egr performance. Can this valve sticking when idling down shut the motor off?? Haven't gotten it to do it when I test drove it, and there is no rhyme or reason when it does it, but when it does shut down, it starts right back up every time????? A little direction would be greatly appreciated, I mainly work on diesels. Thanks

I have seen this issue before and had an EGR issue. Being that you have a symptom and a code.....I would go with the EGR replacement and then recheck. Double check also that the throttle body is clean and no build up on the throttle plate. Usually thats not as much as issue unless the battery was disconnected or weak and then when the memory is reset due to the low voltage....there are idle issues so make sure its clean as a second item.

I couldn't agree more. Had a 2003 duramax 40k miles and went to start it in the morning...almost hydrolocked. It was under warranty and they did replace all of the injectors...but if it wasn't under warranty I would have repaired it myself and figured out which one was hanging open and filling the oil pan with fuel. Which ever cylinder it was would have been soaked with diesel and identified the faulty injector. At $500 each u bet! That is what I take from the point given here...why would a dealer just replace them all? DIAGNOSE PLEASE :-)
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 8 жыл бұрын
What is odd is that I know that Cummins would not allow me to put 6 injectors in. They would require me to isolate which one. If it was contamination and all 6 needed to be replaced then it wouldnt be warranty anyway. They are very specific and what we replace and the diag we need to submit and perform. Some shops still stand by the "all injectors" rule and believe that I am in the wrong. To me its common sense and what we get paid to do....not hand grenade a repair by replacing everything. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

IF running clean fuel, maybe not, as you say. The problem is, how do we know the fuel is always clean? We don't, unless we find a station that is and only fuel there. Not a real world situation. Sound advice on the six ejectors, tho. Another great video David.

Hope you can help with my problem. So I just bought a 05 Dodge Ram 2500 w/ 80k miles and 2 days after I bought it the truck started blowing black smoke it’s fully stock other then a airdog 150. So I took it to a shop here in Southern California and they diagnosed it and said they couldn’t figure out why it was smoking, so they suggested to have the injectors pulled out to have them tested I said ok. Yesterday they call me and tell me there is 5 bad injectors I don’t remember how many of which are doing what but they said some are overfueling and some are returning fuel or underfueling. Now does this sound like its a possibility and what do you recommend I should do?
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 5 жыл бұрын
Its possible. For all 5 to fail at once is odd unless it started with a fuel quality issue. We can only take their word on it at this point unless they can show some test results on paper. Maybe they can or maybe they cant. Typically one would cause the same issues but like I mentioned....contaminated fuel can cause issues on the fuel system.

i would say false.. 03 5.9 CTD with 216,000 miles on it. far past the engineered lifespan of what injectors should be used for. 1 injector started to leak down causing issues. this means the rest arnt to far behind it. could i just replace the 1 and cal it good?? sure, bet then im back in the shop in who knows how long, not to mention if its a major failure and it wont start how much a tow will cost to even get it to my shop.. as a mechanic and someone presented this i would recommend all 6 for the fact that they are consumable, they do fail, and the other 5 probably have just as much gunk in them as the one that failed. im not the drive around with a ticking time bomb type

Here's the problem is I see it you are an old-fashioned Motorhead you're rare we should keep you in a box so you don't get dust on you. The people out there now are just Parts changers. The hard part is to find a shop that actually has somebody who doesn't read a computer and said this is the parts we have to change and they have no idea why. That's probably the reason why they change all six injectors they don't have the training to isolate each individual problem injector.

I get when people say that if you have very high mileage that it might be okay to replace all. But most just jump straight to saying all 6. I concur with this comment, good mechanics are so hard to find. I usually do all my own work which is why I love these great videos but when I bring it in the shop I’ve regretted it almost every time. They give you the run around, leave your truck till they wanna to do it so a one hour job takes two days, and parts are an extra 100 bucks. The dealerships in Canada seem to be more crooked than not.
