The NEW Apple - • The NEW Apple
Apple is well regarded as a design innovator, but what if I told you that isn't exactly true. Let's dive into Apple's past and dissect how a German design heavily influenced the Apple we know today.

Don't forget the influence of the Bauhaus Movemet. The principle of "Less is More" and the whole Braun design really goes down to the Bauhaus philosophy of how things should be designed. Great video as always.
@TheNightstalker80
@TheNightstalker80 5 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely, Bauhaus brought one of the most radical changes in design and architecture. This was the first time design became a thing in peoples mind, there was a clear change in how people and designers look and think about products. The Form Follows Function principle was reinterpreted and lead to a radical reduction of "unneccecary" things. Clear and simple forms became a standard. Not only Rams and Braun did this but Rams design stood out at the time.
@VMHappy
@VMHappy 3 жыл бұрын
Look into the Ulm school of design. It came after Bauhaus, and many Braun products were designed in collaboration with other designers from that school. They introduced the world of product design to Dieter Rams (who was working before as an architect for the Braun brothers). But yes, definitely a follower (after WW2) to the Bauhaus school (closed before WW2), with the addition of a more of a holistic design view.

sorry among designers and even at apple it has been acknowledge for years. Not sure if we can blame people on the street or on the internet of not knowing some of these facts of how thing really work and flow from company to company how they get picked up and extended. Even Jobs who people always show 'we love to steal stuff' video clip in the same and many other interviews talks about this about the design angle, about the sri angle he was not shy about defending the 'stealing' since he rightly so felt he could take it a step further and bring it to the masses.

When my nephew sees a guy in a white jump suit, a bowler hat and mascara on one eye he thinks it is a reference to The Simpsons not A Clockwork Orange. Don't do that. Apple didn't invent minimalism, but neither did Braun. These design elements you cite (orange buttons, brushed aluminum with black accents, simple geometric shapes, rounded corners, drilled speaker grilles) were absolutely _everywhere_ in the 60s and 70s. The interesting thing is that Apple has been able to bring back a style that was considered to look "cheap" and pose it as luxury. Braun is pronounced 'brown' by the way.

This reminds me of how someone might explain who was Richard Teague. You might not know the same, but you would spot his design language a mile away if you knew. He's the one who penned the Rambler, Ambassador, Gremlin, Pacer and latter the Cherokee and LHS series of automobiles. That "cab forward design language" with swoopy fat fenders and generous use of pillars. Almost universal on cars today but in the 90's it was fresh as it was in the 1970's. This is most seen on the 2001 to 2007 Dodge Caravan. You can see this swoopy cab forward design language very clearly and I think fellow designers at Chrysler who bought AMC did that as a nod to his legacy. Yet that's a lot like the German engineer. Once you see it, you'll know it and his legacy lives.

I would disagree that they Apple isn't useful or long lasting. I still prefer macOS (but really prefer Linux) over Windows 10. As for long lasting, I mom's iPhone 6s is still getting updates and is relatively blazing fast. And since iOS app support is better than Android's as a whole, I would definitely say that Apple is long lasting. Sure, there are plenty of Apple fanboys, but that doesn't mean some of what they are spewing out of their mouths isn't truth.

I'm not surprised, Braun has had some of the most gorgeous designs around. I had a Braun electric shaver years ago, stainless steel, completely straight and linear with these raised dimples on it and even the foils were gorgeous. I'm trying to find a photo of it to link to, man that was a gorgeous piece of machinery. * Found it, or one close to it, the photo doesn't do it justice. I can't believe Apple hasn't copied this yet. commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Braun_Micron_Vario_3.jpg

Jon incredibly well done video. You have gone from merely reporting on the hype of latest tech to creating videos that are a work of art. Your creative style is definitely seen in the types fo videos you are creating now. I enjoyed you previously, I love your work now even more. Well done!

Amazing to see such new video ideas from you Jon.Looking forward to seeing more of these what goes "behind the tech we see around" kind of videos.This video makes us connect to the technology we use and throws light on a novel perspective - The journeys people , ideas , design take to get technology into the hands of people.
