I bought one of the original Opals and received it in 2016. I still use it today. The only problem is sometimes it stops making ice. I will drain it and run it thru cleaning with just vinegar. Also I take it outside and blow the dust out. We have an electric blower that cleans it out really well. So worth it for nugget ice.

Wow, lots of traffic all of a sudden as I think Amazon has the GE Opal 1.0 advertised for Prime Day sale. I'd recommend against buying that for $449 as that is a rebadged Opal 1.0, the 2.0 has a lot of feature upgrades worth considering.

Like you I bought the first version through firstbuild, it lasted 3 years, the FirstBuild second version lasted a year. And we just picked up this GE unit as our 3rd Opal's pump died. There are some autofill options for plumbing this thing, I'd highly recommend it, placing a TSD filter on the line. I would avoid using the filters GE / Opal sell, I think they contribute to pump failure as their flow restricts over time. The pump uses a rubber diaphragm setup that starts leaking. I'm on day 2 of the new machine and its already much quieter. Over time using regular tap water means the machine builds up mineral deposits in the auger. I had to take mine part to address a high pitch squealing sound, learned my spotty cleaning schedule and high TDS water contributed to the build up. I have a two filter setup now, one that take the chlorine out and a second phosphate filter that binds the dissolved solids and reduces their ability to cling to the interior of the machine. I only drink water, and having this ice insures I drink more of it. I also enjoy chewing ice from time to time and this machine is cheaper than a dentist appointment. One more point, these machines do not due well in warm environments, over 85 and the machine may stop making ice.

@JasonGolden79
@JasonGolden79 3 жыл бұрын
@@areuaware6842 yeah, so did first build. Total dissolved solids is a problem for these devices because of the auger design. But at $4 for a gallon of distilled water that makes for some expensive ice. This time around I’m installing a phosphate filter. From what I’ve read it binds with dissolved solids so they can’t attach to the surfaces in the machine. We’ll see how that goes.

Just an update after a week of use that I've noticed that is different than the Opal 1.0: - Water tank pump cycle. The 2.0 pumps water into the main reservoir from the side take on a pump cycle now, so don't worry if it doesn't look like the side tank is draining passively into the main tank - UV Light. Noticed that they added a UV light to kill biological growth like mold and algae. This can be a problem due to sunlight + standing water (this is why you have to chlorinate pools). It is recommended that you perform a bleach cycle rinse weekly, so I'd recommend you still follow it, but the UV light addition is a nice touch. - Pumping cycles vary. There seem to be different cycles of water pump cycles that initially after the first few minutes of circulation, the Opal goes into a refrigeration cycle and the pumping noises go away. Sounds different, maybe this is smarter and burns out the pump less quickly. I think the opal previously just seemed to pump all the time at the same rate. - After a week still going strong and making a lot of ice!

Ty for the video. I am curious if you are using reverse osmosis water, why would I need to clean so often because the water I am using does not have many particles in it for mold to feed off and limited minerals also. Why do these things need to be cleaned so often if you are using clean water.

I have this one in the Black Stainless Steel with the Sidetank and I love it. I use it with the filter and have it running 24/7 I just fill it with regular tap water and only have to clean once a month. The ice is perfect for making smoothies. I just wish they'd tell us if the UV light ever needs replacing. Those things don't last forever and since it's enclosed there is no easy way to get to it to see if it's working.

My Brand new Opal 2.0 in the first batch had metal shavings in it, had one in my mouth with the first mouthful of ice. So far after about 6 batches of ice, I let it all melt into a large white bowl and i find metal flakes in the bottom. I also found larger metal fragments in the bottom of the water reservoir. What makes me angrier is I have posted a very objectionable review with no biasing or drama on GE's website and they take it down every time citing it does not meet their guidelines which are, 1. Keep your review focused on the product. (It was all about the product). 2. Avoid writing about customer service (nothing about customer service), 3. Refrain from mentioning competitors or the specific price you paid for the product. (None of this was mentioned). 4. Do not include any personally identifiable information, such as full names. (There was none). GE is censoring me from getting this out there because they know it will cause a shit storm. Please spread the word and check your ice and the bottom of the ice maker.

Most common problems are pump failure and compressor failure. These are not self serviceable options usually. Being overseas it will unlikely be serviceable unless GE supports this internationally which I don’t know. Probably could get parts and have some appliance person repair it though. I just got mine about 2 months ago, and I think that it's already gone out. I don't get any water out of tube "A", and it keeps telling me that it needs more water, even though I have a full side tank hooked up to it.
@TheChanClanLife
@TheChanClanLife 2 жыл бұрын
Make sure the main tank is full when you try to start it up even if the side tank is full, sometimes too little water in the main tank causes it to have a priming failure, or there is air in the line and it’s causing a priming problem. One way to help the pump prime is to place your finger over the main tank intake inlet with the screen/filter off while it is on and you should feel suction against your finger, once enough has built up let your finger go and the water should suck up, repeat a couple of times until the water is dripping down the back suggesting that the pump has primed effectively and water is circulating

Make sure the intake isn't clogged, sometimes need to prime by taking off the filter and covering the intake valve in the basin with your finger as there may be air trapped in the line. Do this with the basin full of water so that when the line sucks against your finger when you release the water can get sucked up, priming the line, like a siphon effect

I wouldn't even have any ice making concerns if I didn't buy one of those quasi expensive ($3,700) top refrigerator bottom freezer pull out units from KitchenAid. Our old side by side never had a problem making sufficient ice. However, I need another problem like I need a hole in my head. No, but I'm guessing that is mold/algae building up. Run a cleaning cycle as recommended by GE. Use a cap of bleach and circulate that, then do 4 rinse cycles to flush the bleach out. The bleach kills the mold pretty good. Even with the 2.0 with UV light I get green algae growing in the tank from sunlight and likely mold just in the water despite double filtering the water from my fridge and also through the Opal filter. Mold is ubiquitous. Bleach it.
