In this project video I cover the construction of two ballistic shields I made, modeled off the BZT-75. the goal was to make one level 3a(pistols) and one level 3 (m80, 5.56, 7.62x39) rated. Ballistic testing will be done over the weekend, so make sure to subscribe! They ended up being quite lightweight and cost effective, so I'm excited to see how they do. material list:
18 OZ Woven Roving fiberglass: www.tapplastic... I used 10 yards for both of the shields, if you were building one of your own you'll only need about 7 yards.
.25 in polycarbonate backer: freckleface.co... This place has the best prices for polycarbonate sheet around!
Resin used: Bondo fiberglass resin, from a hardware store: www.lowes.com/...
Ceramic strike face: cornell Ivory from lowes: www.lowes.com/...

Wait... is that symbol the symbol that Constantine had his troops draw on their shields? Cause that would be cool if it were.

Thank you for your video. For those who are unfamiliar with the ☧ symbol on the shield, this is the monogram composed of the two Greek letters X superimposed with P. Its pronunciation is Chi-Rho. ☧ represented Roman Emperor Constantine and his army who defeated Maxentius and his army at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge on the Tiber River on October 28, 312. Thus ☧ is explained by the victorious Latin phrase "In hoc signo vinces".

Great stuff. Consider covering the brittle tile face and edge of the shield with a thin layer of foam or 1/16" polycarbonate/hdpe. That way a simple melee strike from a baseball bat or just dropping it on the ground doesn't shatter the ceramics. Adding a layer of mylar or aluminum window mesh offers protection to the bearer from weaponized microwaves.

Man hearing them American prices blow my mind. Stuff is soo cheap down there. I tend to wrap a layer of fiberglass around each of my builds. Helps with spall and kinda holds everything together. I usually go 17 or 18 layers of fiberglass and then the last wrap puts one layer in front and two in back..

So more of a square design? I do like making the top transparent though, you could build up those areas with more polycarbonate, acrylic, glass, ect. And get it to a higher ballistic rating

@@Techthisoutmeow i have seen some shields that have given up on transparent sections altogether and instead place a camera on the front and a thin tablet screen for it on the back. Then it can benefit from thermal/night vision also.

Could alternating the weave by cutting on the bias help stagger the pattern in a way that would better trap the bullet? Like staggering bricks makes the wall stronger. If you cut each layer on a slight rotation, would use more fabric but maybe be worth it by limiting the access of the bullet even more?

Maybe polycarbonate in front of the fib glass since the fib glass breaks from sharp angle bends and the plastic would act as a contouring medium

May want to consider getting a roll or two of phenolic coated kevlar. 2 layers will stop a 9mm hp, 4 layers a 9mm ball round. 10 layers will stop ANY conventional pistol round, save for the "cop killer" bullets of the 90's, or obviously any rifle cartridge from an AR/AK pistol.

in theory would it be better to use HDPE instead of polycarbonate?
@Techthisoutmeow
@Techthisoutmeow 2 жыл бұрын
For the laminate? Or the backer? Polycarbonate is stronger than hdpe for most applications. As a backer hdpe would need to be thicker, at the same weight. Hdpe biggest advantage is the cost, because it's easier to recycle at home. You could for sure use hdpe, but I would do some things differently.

You are using "Plain Weave" fiberglass. Dose it work to use cheaper fiberglass like "Mat" (i hope i m pronouncing correctly)? Thickness/protection ratio, will have the same number of sheets if i m gonna use cheaper fiberglass?
@piratewhoisquiet
@piratewhoisquiet 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge chopped strand fiberglass matting is effectively useless for ballistic protection. Fiberglass laminate armors work on a similar principle to Kevlar, they rely on the glass fibers being woven together, so that the tensile strength of every strand is reinforced by the tensile strength of every other fiber it interlocks with. Woven fiberglass is to chicken wire as chopped strand fiberglass matting is to those bead curtains people hang in doorways. One will effectively restrain chickens when properly employed, the other has no chance of restraining anything.

@@piratewhoisquiet Woven fiberglass like he used in this vid, is too expensive in my country, and by my estimates to make two plates (rifle rated) it will cost me about 500$. The one used in making septic tanks , bathtubs, etc... is about 3 times cheaper, but if its useless for protection , there is no point to try it. Thx for explain g...

I feel like _not_ bending is the better option.
@whyukraine
@whyukraine 2 жыл бұрын
Couple reasons for this: _feel_ like, with almost all materials, wrapping the core material multiple times with a fabric intended to absorb the lateral stress & hold the material together, will work better across a flat plane.
@whyukraine
@whyukraine 2 жыл бұрын
2nd, the primary advantage of a pavise style shield is the strength of the "ridge". When you melt the poly, it is weakened rather than strengthened.
@whyukraine
@whyukraine 2 жыл бұрын
If you really want to make a creased ridge on a shield in a modern ballistic context, better to a) make the shield from 2 pieces, connected by a semi-flexible, springed, hinge, to absorb some impact & allow the 2 pieces to retain integrity.
@whyukraine
@whyukraine 2 жыл бұрын
b) offset the shield handle from the impact surface with a center-grip (rather than strapped as shown) to reduce the stress & available target area. Its fine to include the strap option, in fact multiple strap options, for carrying.
@whyukraine
@whyukraine 2 жыл бұрын
Think about it this way: with a shield like this, mounted with a bicycle mirror, I could basically shoot around corners. That would be the primary, amazing advantage.
