Teddy Pendergrass acting!!!! 1980 skit with Teddy acting as a New Yorker street singer. He sang “On Broadway” to the “tourist” trying to find their way through the city. He says he’ll sing if they pay the “kitty”(drop cash in his guitar case). After singing, he doesn’t accept the cash and tells the ladies dinner was on him.
Teddy’s silky, smooth baritone voice sounds amazing as usual even as a street singer!

The greatest singer ever before that horrific car crash that put an end to his career in 1982. The power in his voice was all gone. He was just on the verge of superstardom when it was all taken away. I was lucky to see Teddy live twice, once when he was lead singer of Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes in 1973, then I saw him in 1982 months before that terrible car crash when he was doing his solo tour in England in the UK. He wasn’t well known in the UK, like I said superstardom was nearly there, he would have sold out everywhere and become one of the world’s biggest stars ever.

So true! He was an amazing singer and you were so lucky to have seen him live and in person. It’s also true about him not being well known in the UK at the time. It was said and he himself even stated in UK magazine articles how agitated he was for not being as popular as he would like to have been. I believe it was because of his ego and his acclaimed fame in the U.S. Shep (his lifelong manager) said he cancelled his last UK performance. He claimed he had lost his voice, when the truth was he was annoyed at the fact that he wasn’t getting the fan response he had hoped for there. Shep told him it wasn’t fair to those that had bought his tickets or to moms who had gotten babysitters to come see his show. Apparently, Teddy was not phased by it and did not appear for the concert. Two weeks later, the accident happed.

Thank you for your comment! I am a true Teddy fan. Although I was just a baby when he went solo, I have a deep appreciation for his music, his performances and his life story.

@@msdemelogg I don’t blame him for being annoyed, his singing and the power and passion in his voice was very very special. They never played his songs when he went solo on the radio. At that time the radio was massive. BBC Radio 1 never played them. I knew he’d be a gigantic star, it was all taken away from him in that crash. The Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes thing didn’t help him as well. They had featuring Teddy Pendergrass on the later Albums. I like everyone else thought it was Harold Melvin on the lead vocals. I knew he would go solo, he was the whole group anyway. On Wake Up Everybody single he did all the vocals, double tracked his voice. He blows Elvis, Sinatra and all the big stars away, his singing was extremely special. I still play the Black and Blue Album today 50years on, I never get tired of it. His vocals on It All Depends On You are sensational. The whole Album is great. It’s my favourite Album of all time. The MFSB orchestra on that Album are fantastic.

@@msdemelogg Yes, he was special. I was lucky enough to be born at the right time, I was a teenager when all the Philly sound came out. The greatest music ever. Kenny Gamble Leon Huff were geniuses they wrote and produced fantastic records. The MFSB Orchestra had some of the best talent in the world. Dexter Wansel who worked with them was another genius, have a listen to all his albums they are incredible.

Simply amazing!!! Wish we could all go back in time sometimes just for the music. RIP Joe Tarsia…thank you again for sharing your experience and expertise on Teddy and the Philly sound. I was born in Texas, but I get to travel to Philly from time to time and I always wonder what it was like to walk downtown and on Broad Street during that time. I’ve only experienced the Walk of Fame there and where PIR once stood. All in all, it was still an amazing experience and yes Teddy’s baritone voice was simply amazing and unmatched til this day! There will NEVER be another! I just wish that accident hadn’t happened, he would’ve reached heights unknown and many more “firsts”🙂

That was one of his big plans, to be an actor. Even had Sydney Poitier coach him. Unfortunately, it got derailed.
