White Lies We Tell Our Children | Colin Stokes | TEDxBeaconStreet

You know that feeling when your child discovers you've been lying to them about something? Some lies we tell are pretty harmless. But others--like those surrounding privilege--contribute to the stubborn inequality in our world.
Colin was performing in a long-running off-Broadway show when his daughter was born. “I was singing and telling jokes for the delegates of the 2004 Republican Convention. There was such an intense conversation going on about values and the direction of the country. But as an actor my job was to distract from that. It dawned on me that there was more I could contribute.”
Fatherhood then showed him how little he knew. Leaving Broadway behind, the family moved to Brookline. Colin found a new career in non-profit marketing and launched into fatherhood, a role that continues to challenge his curiosity.
This is Colin’s third TEDx talk: his previous talks have examined the role that movies play in shaping our ideas about gender and race, and who should be the heroes of our lives. His role as a father continues to push him to examine life’s difficult questions, and he generously shares his thoughts with us.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Best information ever. Really needed at this time..Thank you for the content. You need a platform outside of TED for the sake of diversity and your knowledge to influence this generation , the absolute key needed to maintain peace and freedom so called , in the US , ultimately the only way to prevent this generation from war , not only with in our own country, but within ourselves. Please help make peace for the sake of our children who are not going to know how to deal with this. Branch out for humanity and prevention of war here in our nation

We were poor so mom would take me to the store to get what i needed and maybe an extra. I couldn't use it until after Christmas vacation so the other kids believe they were Christmas gifts. I totally understand and know she worked super hard for that extra and that she went without. It breaks my heart she went without for her kids. So yeah Santa skipped my house. I never got that reindeer driven sleigh magical man in the sky spiel. But my son did the first few years. I crumbled those cookies and used my left hand to write the card. Love my lil dude ❤

You are an awesome man. Not many white people acknowledge this fact or fail to. This topic is one of a historic monumental silence which is NEVER taught in this country where it has as much essential value as the "American Revolution" does in history because that's how long it has been in this country. Why is that? It's a dang shame that's why! I admire your humility. I commend you on teaching your children and now thousands of people the TRUTH. thank you

White lies are... lies. Few times to lie. "...if a doctor consoles a sick man by saying, "Thank God you are better, and there is hope of your recovery," though these words are contrary to the truth, yet they may become the consolation of the patient and the turning point of the illness. This is not blameworthy." ~ 'Abdu'l-Bahá, Bahá'í Faith

I don't think that Meghan Markle had a CLUE about being a British Royal Princess. I think she thought "I have handled the media before. This is nothing new to me!" and she got a mega shock so took a wee " I wanna go home " tantrum. At first they announced they were going to Canada to enjoy the wide open spaces but next thing they're in LA doing photo shoots etc. LA is far off from the wide open spaces they wanted for little Windsors. Harry HATES cities but they're young and in love so watch this space....... I think Ellen is just the person to pick on because everyone has been hiding away and not doing much to hate on. What you see is what you get with Ellen which makes her easy pickings. As soon as more things are going on the public will forgive Ellen for everything and concentrate on the latest "celebrities to hate".
