This is what happens when you focus on what you have instead of what you don’t. Steve Lacy is the youngest member of the band The Internet. When he was only 16 years old, he co-produced their Grammy-nominated LP, Ego Death. After graduating high school and turning 18 years old last year, he traveled the world from Fuji Rock Japan to Splendor in The Grass (Australia) to Bonnaroo. He is now home in Compton, California, collaborating with and producing for artists including Kendrick Lamar, Mark Ronson, Vampire Weekend and Tyler The Creator, and has projects in market with J. Cole, Big Sean, Syd, and more.Steve’s refers to his first solo project as a “song series”, a sampling of the breadth and depth of his talents that breaks away from the traditional EP or LP format - less a structured body of work, and more like a series of sketches that might hang on a gallery wall. Steve wrote, produced and recorded the project entirely using his iPhone. He played live guitar and bass, created drum patterns and even recorded vocals via the built-in iPhone microphone. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

TBH things might have been completely different. His restrictions on gear is what made him able to produce what he did, having the macbook might have meant he had access to so many professional sounding sounds that he didn't develop his style.

So YES I am in health and I hope that anyone else that finds themselves watching this video and other Ted Talks like it continue to pursue their dreams.

He is so dope! His shy humble spirit is adorable, you can tell he is so genuine and his resourcefulness in creating his art is inspiring and something I can relate to. You don’t need all the fancy equipment, as long as you have the drive and vision of what you want to create and capture, you will get the results you want. Can’t wait to see what else he does. His music is awesome!😍

LJs Journey Steve Lacy is producing a full album with (or for) Ravyn Lenae. Her first single actually came out a week or 2 ago called 'Sticky'. You can hear him harmonizing a little on the song as well. Maybe he will be featured doing vocals as well on other songs of hers once the project drops but I only know of full album production. I'm actually too excited now!

I hope he keeps having an amazing career and a lot of happiness throughout it

I produce songs on Garageband on my phone and started out doing so to see if I should invest in producing and production equipment before I even knew Steve did this, but I thought the fact that it was produced on an iPhone hindered the beat's validation, so I thought I shouldn't do it. When I found out Steve made such good quality beats and it was unnoticeable that they were produced on an iPhone, it gave me confidence to keep doing it.

steve lacy is by far one of my all-time favorite artists, & looking at all of these positive comments about him makes me so happy. i love the thought of thinking that you need one *specific* thing so badly to start something your passionate about, bc that’s not realistic. his true passion showed through using the resources he had in front of him at the current time. absolute sweetheart and genius.
