Emily - you are an inspiration to us all. Thank you so much for helping all of us science communicators to discern why understanding perspective of our reader/viewers/followers is so very important to communicating effectively. Do not stop in this great mission of yours, so many of us look up to you. Sincerely, TJ Cooney

This talk is a bit scary. Be kind and smile so they are more likely to trust/believe/follow. Show evidence... that worked/works on me. I do agree that delivery matters, but not as much as evidence.

Ms. Calendrelli, are the teachers in WV able to avoid the "Coal in the classroom" if they want? Do they get pushback from the school administrators and school districts? Certainly there must be some science teachers in WV that are teaching the truth. Right???

She is good. But the problem is that the science is politicized.

Agreed, not one party should push it, it should be it's own separate thing.

Everything is politicized these days. In a perfect world it should stand on its own. But with social media and the internet it's become easier to spread misinformation. You have to work with what you have and that is what she's doing. Taking something that is already political (regardless of whether it should be) and go from there. Especially since the Government plays a large role in implementing and enforcing laws and regulations that impact things like climate change.

If you think that Climate Change is a major imminent crisis, but also think nuclear power plants should be shutdown.... It takes a lot of coal to refine the steel in a wind turbine. Fracking is killing coal, its also the primary reason the USA is leading in reducing climate emissions. Its why the USA is the *only* country making significant reductions. The science denial of people who oppose fracking and nuclear power is also emotional.

processing uranium takes a lot of fossil fuel, more than building wind turbins

I trust you don’t use gasoline and that your home electricity does not rely on coal in any way. You’re a very pretty, articulate young woman. You may learn in years to come of other paradigms. God bless.

This is kind of what she's talking about. We know the value of coal, but stopping there prevents people from finding safer ways to obtain and use it (Both from the perspective of individuals mining it and the environment as a whole). A state shouldn't have to solely depend on one major resource to keep its citizens afloat. And we shouldn't just stop at "good enough". We want there to still be an earth left for future generations and for people of West Virginia and Virginia (my home state, go Hokies!) to be self sustaining without relying on one single industry.
