NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk for medical advice and consult a doctor before undertaking any form of hormone therapy. We've flagged this talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, because it appears to fall outside TEDx's curatorial guidelines. This talk only represents the speaker’s personal understanding of and experiences with human biology and testosterone therapy. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
Dr. Andre Harris tells his personal story about how low testosterone affects your body and your relationships and why this doesn’t need to become your new normal. Dr. Andre T. Harris, Sr, Fellow of The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist (Ob/Gyn) in Dayton and a practice owner at Horizons Women’s Healthcare and Horizons Hormones & Weight Loss. He has a passion for women’s health care and a particular interest in hormone therapy. He has received several awards during training and in private practice. Current chair of the Ob/Gyn department as well as a board member at Miami Valley Hospital, he is a native of South Bend, Indiana (go IRISH!!). He is the father of five grown children and has been married to his soul mate and business partner, Charlotte D, for twenty-five years. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I am a 38 year old male (healthy, ideal weight, non-smoker, non-drinker, resistance training 3-4 times per week, 8 hours of good sleep a day, optimal vitamin D levels, and on a Mediterranean diet plus 14/10 time restricted eating). I tested my total testosterone twice (between 8 am and 9 am as recommended). In both cases I got values around 330. Even though I had low libido and low energy, my physician as well as a urologist (both in Chicago) told me that hormone therapy was not necessary because my values were in the normal range (between 300 and 900). Unfortunately, doctors in general don't understand that normal doesn't mean optimal.

microtrabecula just because your T is within range does not mean its flourishing. It means your simply not dead. These doctors have to get off their asses and actually research what is healthy. Also, I've been eating healthy foods, proteinic, and foods that increase testosterone levels. Adding here some pills called "Testosterone Boosters", I feel like I have consistently changed into a different person. I feel like I have the energy, mental and physical, to deal with every person and/or situation in my life."

I’ve used the gel lotion. Which is 41mg per pump. 2 pumps per day for about 280 total mg per week. It’s easy to use but my test only went up to 190. I actually felt way better. Not as good as I could tho. Because I’ve done 25 years of self medicating I reverted back to it. I take 200mg of testosterone cypionate per week. It’s a slower to work, longer lasting ester than test propionate or enemthate. It takes longer to start working (approx 3 weeks) but it also has a longer half life so you take it less often. (1 shot per week vs every day or every third day depending on the compound). That’s pretty much it. If you keep the doses low it’s not going to give you side effects. Remember we are talking about getting healthy not bodybuilding. These doses are to get you back to where you were when you were young. Not get huge. Thus the term “use”, not “abuse”

I really appreciated this Ted talk! I deal with low T and got help and I am feeling better. Thing is I never thought it would happen to me and it did. What was sad to me is the broad range that is used to treat low T. The range is 250- 1100. If you fall on that range even at the lower spectrum you are considered normal and may not get help, depending on the doctor. I went to two endocrinologists with my levels being 331 and they said I was normal. Low normal but normal. Even after I told them I didn't feel right, they still didn't help me. So I recommend you find a doctor who will listen like Dr. Andre stated in this talk. You will feel better once you get the help.

I watched this video several years ago. It really hit home. Doctors didn't want to test my T levels. I finally got a full blood work done and sure enough I had really low T. It explains several of my medical issues. And now I'm talking to my doc about starting trt and possibly reducing/stopping other meds.

Mine was 310 when I finally got tested, I am 51, and am on my second round of pellets. It has changed pretty much everything for the better. I realize now I must have been low for the last 15 years. I sleep better, I feel better, less tired, weight loss, and the rest of the benefits described :) I wish I would have done it much sooner. Thank God my Dr approached me about getting tested and the eventual therapy administered.

Reasons behind modern day low testosterone: Poor nutrition Poor amount of exercise Poor sleep quality Too much stress Pollutans and hormone-disturbing compounds, like BPA's etc. And finally the controverisal one.. The overall fight against masculinity. Before it was expected to be physically strong as a male and from a young age you'd do physical labour etc. Which would increase T-levels, but not anymore.
@notyou3924
@notyou3924 4 жыл бұрын
@Rishi Eastwood I don't think genetics explain the general decline in testosterone levels over the last couple of decades, no. Genetics would only be a factor when comparing individuals. So person A can have a genetic predisposition to have lower T-levels than person B. If genetics was a factor explaining declining T-levels in the overall male population, it would mean that over just a few decades, some significant mutation-action has been going on. Which is unlikely.

@@notyou3924 and also most healthy men have around the same testosterone levels of their respective age group so it makes no sense to talk about genetics and testosterone. Such an excellent presentation on hormones! Thank you Dr. Andre! According to many scientists like stem cell researcher and bio-engineer, Dr. Anthony Jay, testosterone has dramatically been lowering in men for generations due to exogenous estrogenics in plastics and chemicals like pesticides, atrazine and roundup on our foods and in the environment contributing to sickness, low fertility, obesity, man boobs, apathy, etc.
