This episode was not a debate like the other episodes, but I believe was a prepared dialogue for a specific audience of American education authorities.
Participants on the main panel are Ziyad Husami, Lebanon; Catherine Orcel, France; Padmanabha Gopinath, India; Sara Chatt, United Kingdom. Also speaking:
02:25 Young-Koo Lee, Korea
08:54 Beatrice Kairupan, Indonesia
16:54 Susan Rennie, Union of South Africa
18:21 Edward Dennis Normandy, III, Philippines
19:46 Norbert Scholz, Germany

I'm indonesian and I have the similar experience. When I got the 5th rank in the school, my father bought me Boombox which was popular in early 2000's. I treasure it, even though as the time goes by, the CD lens scratched, the tape reader started to unable to read, but the radio is the only thing still works. My father could buy me anything I want, but he preferred to save the money for my education. Then I graduated from a famous university in Jakarta, be an auditor, make friends with foreigners, and married a japanese. I moved to Kyoto and left my beloved Boombox in my bedroom. But my father doesn't litter it because he knows that I love it so much. As a kid, I was sad that my father didn't buy me everything like the others. As an adult, I think he educated me while saving money for formal education. Yes, education is important, both formal and family. We have to appreciate the good things we have.. watch, boombox, books, type writer, smartphone..and of course family. :)

Indonesia education system will never get better in a short time at least. or never happen at all. current leader and minister are produced by past education, and future leader and minister are produced by today's education. so it will be an endless process. and we all agree current education is bad. not skeptical but garbage in garbage out. ah one more thing, there's a theory out there, how to sell products easily, sell it to fools. 270 million Indonesians is huge market for any business in this world. no wonder capitalists in this world want this country to remain stupid. That's why I've never blamed the leader of this country, and have never voted. because I know the result will be the same (in terms of major policy especially education). don't believe me? let's see 20 years from now, it won't be much different, or maybe even worse with so much misinformation and distractions from social media.

@@mastrammeena328 I thought the opposite. Her views regarding the school systems being based on differences in ability were pretty outdated (even for her times) and like Gopi said, the school system she supported actually promoted class differences since the richer students would have greater access to the better-equipped schools (regardless of the few seats reserved for students from poorer economic backgrounds). Gopi had a more progressive outlook on what school systems ought to be like (a mix of the American and Indian school systems) since it promoted the public school system (making schools accessible to all regardless of economic background) while having a rigorous curriculum that allowed students to think for themselves.

They were the best in their countries. If a similar program is done today, the intellectual teenagers will also be ferreted out and I’m sure they will stand toe to toe with this group. We tend to compare them to the average teenagers we see on social media today and that not seem fair.
@omathitis8498
@omathitis8498 3 жыл бұрын
@@johannramsay Can't blame the people if they see it that way. The current education system is more concerned about pushing ideologies rather than actual education of the youth. It is to be expected that the availability of technology and sophisticated teaching techniques, not to mention the better opportunities and more freedom the people currently enjoy, should produce high value students and graduates, and I have to agree that it is unfair to compare because despite all these advantages that the present generation has, watching the videos of students from the 1950s speaking, thinking and conversing about the serious issues of their time, it clearly shows that they are far more fruitful in terms of intellectual, academic, social and behavioral development. For example, in the past most educated people of the world agreed that the fall of the Berlin Wall is crucial in proving the long debated point that communism will eventually fail itself because of its detachment to the reality and socio-cultural and psychological, especially the economic needs of its people. Today, there are students from campuses and universities in the USA, Canada, even in AUS that promotes the idea that capitalism is the ultimate evil in society, but when asked questions they can't even accurately define socialism and it's difference from communism without interchanging the definition of both. This is a failure of the current education system. Back then, facts and evidence are the foundations from where every "good" ideas are built. Today, feelings are valued the most over reason, and telling the truth is hate speech. Here is the painful part. Let's say for example that the similar program is to be implemented today. It'll fail. Why? SJWs, modern feminism, snowflakes and the like, will brand the program as "fascist". Now, if you are familiar with the ideas these groups support and promote, you'll understand.

It's kinda sad when I remember this video recorded in 1957 and Indonesia get their freedom after WWII at 1945. I believe the Indonesian girl come from high class family, and if her family can't buy watch that means lower class family can't achieve something cheaper, like food etc😶 When we under Netherlands and Japan during WWII, only high class family (ex: royal family, rich family) can get formal education since Netherlands and Japan ban education to low class family

Simple google search got me to public record of one and only 82 year old Beatrice Kauripan who lives in Queens, NY. If she's 82 years today then she probably was born around 1939 or 1940 and she would've been 17 or 18 years old in 1957. Ah so she had better live, I guess. But i couldn't make it, i got 2nd place instead, i was so sad. In the end, i couldn't have my birthday party but she still bought me a medium size blackforest cake (so we could share them some with my cousin) cause i worked so hard. That was really memorable and quiet funny though 😂. Aiish what a kid. Even in the same city, the public school book taught elementary 2 level English to their junior high school, while international schools have taught Singapore curriculum level English to their elementary students. The public school students learns greetings and introduction in reading passages with non standard or broken English in middle school, while first graders in international schools has been introduced to the basic of simple present and simple past tenses. That's just one or two examples. How can they compete in the future with such gap in education?
