In today's video I'm talking about the recent trend of fetishized and performative admiration toward Black women by nonblack men on social media. I'm 100% in support of healthy interracial relationships, but the pandering and exploitation that I'm speaking about in this video is definitely not ok.

Take this with the SMALLEST grain of salt bc I’m a white woman, but I study history with a focus on the history of sexuality, but historically speaking white and black women have always been pitted against each other via their sexuality, and white women have always benefited from it while black women suffer for it. In the 19th century, black women were fetishized and shown as hyper sexual partly so that white women could be seen as pure and chaste. Sexuality has always been used as a way to other black women soecifically as well as a way to control them, and colonize them. This, of course, benefits both white men and white women but has the added affect of white women being like “oh well the patriarchy is bad but I’m not like /them/“, and allows white men to fetishize black women because they view them as hyper sexual. Basically, the fetishization of black women has always been a means of control, and to uphold the patriarchy. It’s disgusting

I know it's implied, but during slavery it was also a way to rationalize and not take responsibility for sleeping with (i.e. raping) their property. And their poor gaslit wives needed to believe it too. Sort of a, "these black women just need sex so badly. What's a poor land and property owning, privileged, white male slave owner to do? I even have to give my neighbors some bed partners when they come for dinner, these women are so insatiable." Knowledge of this particular stereotype had escaped me somehow until I read it in a textbook on slave/master dynamics. Who knew? LOL And I'm a black woman. I was shook. Just another of many ways to "other" and de-humanize us. As if we don't bleed red and have the same hormones running through us as women of all colors of the rainbow.

As a black weeb that I’ve noticed a lot of fetishization of black ppl specifically black women especially in hentai surprisingly. I’ve been dabbling in weeb things for a while now and it’s becoming genuinely disturbing. I’ve noticed how black women are degraded irl but behind the scenes they are the most lusted after. Ebony is one of the most searched thing on the hub and on Reddit there is a whole community dedicated to black women doing it with white boys. The second most disturbing thing abt these aside from the content itself is the comments, just straight up disgusting comments that really make you think abt the world a different way. I remember having a crush on a black character (I think it was Question Mark from Radio Free Roscoe if memory serves) when I was growing up, and I remember feeling so weird about the way some of my family would talk about it. Like, any time I mentioned that I found a black actor attractive in passing, I would hear "you've always had a thing for black guys". That always bothered me because I've always just liked people, regardless of their race or gender. It really made me feel strange and uncomfortable, like it wasn't "normal" to be white and be attracted to black people. And in a way, it felt like they were sexualizing that attraction EVEN THOUGH I WAS A KID. I wonder if some of these white people who fetishize black people end up doing it because the coded messages that other white people send to them that being attracted to black people is something "kinky", instead of it just being treated the same as their attraction to other white people.

@@karabokhwiane7593 I think the distinction comes in with how they see the people they like as a whole. Preference would be, “ I like ____ because they tend to ____.” Fetish is when, “I like ______ because they will/are _____” People who have a fetish think all people are one way, while people with a preference still recognize that ____ are still humans with a sense of individuality. I know I didn’t explain it well, but I hope that helped at least a little.

@@karabokhwiane7593 preference means you like all, but like something or somebody a little bit more bc of the taste (food) features, appearance,... Fetish (in this case) is when you find somebody sexual appealing for their stereotypical features such as big butts, big breasts, voluptuous/curvy for example or their skin color If you wanna date somebody because like them and think their features are MORE beautiful and don’t mind dating other people then it’s a preference, but if you only want to date them to satisfy your sexual needs or bc you think that they are sexy just for their race or physical appearance then it’s a fetish

"These men are parading their 'love' for black women as some sort of badge of honor or brave hearts, to desire the undesirable." THIS. THIS. THIS. I am a trans man, a Hispanic one btw. But that means I grew up a Hispanic girl. In the South. I grew up thinking I should straighten my hair, Whiten my teeth, wear trendy clothes, blend in with the white people. I experienced racism in my elementary, harsh racism. I grew up thinking I was ugly and everyday I prayed I was born white. Blue eyes, straight hair. Thin, tall, no stretch marks. Etc. When I started getting older. People liked me bc of my race. I was golden, I had some weight, I was curvy. I'm looked at as the "thick Latina" oh I'm "crazy" bc of my race. "Never get a Latina girl she crazy." Oh but "she has the biggest ass" no. Not all Hispanics are thick, curvy, crazy, and speak Spanish. We're just like everyone else. But people fetishize the body that's been called overweight, the Carmel skin that's gotten me detention for the same thing a white boy did, and the thighs I grew up wanting to cut off. Once u get people that fetishize the things u were taught to hate u think it's 'love' but I should be happy bc he's the only person that didn't shun me out. It's. Not. Love. If. He. Wanted. To. Be. With. You. Bc. Of. Stereotypes. About. Your. Race!!! But he's lucky he got a calm one. Like we're dogs? Like they got a tame one? We're humans. Not dogs. And you shouldn't be rewarding these men for liking your race, it's the bare minimum. Stay safe lovelies.

They liked the fact the I was considered black but had light skin. I felt more like an object of pleasure rather than a real human. I thought I was ugly because of the kinks and coils in my hair yet because my skin was light enough I was seen as pretty or “exotic“. I could never explain why this treatment felt so racist and wrong to me. This video helped me so much and thank you for bringing attention to this problem.

Most of these white boys are false, they aren't looking for love, they are looking for a conquest, something to tick off of their bucket list. A lot of my friends were like this, they wanted to have a black women, just to say that they had had a black woman. For what it's worth, I love black women, always have, I grew up in an area called Pitsmoor, Sheffield, UK. It was where most of the Jamaican families settled in the UK in the 50's and 60's. In fact, I loved black women so much, I married one. I'm 63 years old now, and I have been married to a beautiful black woman for 33 years, we have been together 35 years in total, and we have two beautiful mixed race kids, a girl and a boy. To all the black women out there, stay on your guard you beautiful black ladies, make any man work hard for your affections, don't give it up too early, make the men wait, the serious boyfriend contenders will stick around, the players will move on.

I feel like pushing this trend of obnoxiously telling everyone you’d date a black woman only further pushes the societal notion that black women are “commonly” unattractive. Right! I’m glad someone else sees this. I was watching a Tik Tok video one time where it was a compilation of these dudes saying how much they like black girls and there was this one girl in the comments that was like “Even if they don’t mean it. This is corrective promotion for us ladies” and I was like how??? This is not corrective promotion at all especially since a lot of these videos subtly treat us as jokes. If they don’t mean the shit then ppl will pick up on that and be like “Oh these girls are gullible and easy to fool. They don’t actually like them. In all actuality they’re ‘unattractive’ to them” and start to treat us more as jokes since we’re so seemingly easily smitten by just the slightest, bare minimum compliments. To me this just send signals to others that we’re easy targets, easy to take advantage of and we’ll take anything that’s the bare minimum. It’s disgusting.

My heart is aching. I am watching this and I as a Hispanic person experience a version of this, as well. This year has hit me like a ton of bricks. I was manipulated to think that my race and culture is unworthy and that I should be lucky to be in the presence of a white man or be lucky if they talk to me, etc since I was little. And now I am realizing, there was nothing wrong with my culture and blood. It is a gift and treasure. Even I dyed my hair and straightened and I stopped because I was destroying me as if there was something unacceptable about me.

Very well stated. The problem isn't having a fetish, but fetishizing a whole race. People want to be appreciated for them, and for others to be attracted to them as an individual, not as a representative of a demographic. The other issue is expecting handouts for saying black women are beautiful. If I give you a compliment, you do not owe me any gratitude. And you shouldn't ever. That's some strange attempt at power play, a "nice guy" trope with a twist.

along the vein of this conversation, i remember being eliminated as a romantic option on the basis of my race all through schooling. i had so many friends, but in my majority white school, most people never even considered me an option to begin with and i don’t think a lot of them were aware of it. those that did express interest in me were often either not white or made it very weird very quickly lol. interestingly though, rather than make me really crave romantic attention, this whole situation has had the opposite effect. i was entirely unconcerned with looking for a relationship for a super long time and i think it honestly helped me grow into myself a lot more as a result. brilliant video as always, tee, i loved your talking points. while i’m not a black woman, i am a woc and your message resonates across the board. black ladies do get their own special brand of bizarre attention from men and i recognized some of those differences mentioned in the discussion, but it was fascinating to see some similarities there as well. it’s nice to know there are other people out there are dealing with the same type of world.

I’ve watched this video 4 times and I’m just about to watch it again because it’s so succinct and well put. I always used to think that this kind of stuff was well intentioned, because if you’re not a cis, straight, able-bodied, upper middle class white man, even the privileged group giving you a crumb of attention is such a complement as seen by them that it outweighs the objectification of an entire group of people. It kind of reminds me of the model minority myth because stuff like this seems flattering until you realize it simplifies entire races and cultures to being “smart” or “attractive” instead of talking about them as human beings, with multidimensional characters and feelings. It stops genuine discussion because racist folks can point to these men who use their attraction to Black women to get clout, and say “see look you don’t have any problems, because the oppressor likes you.” But what happens if they don’t. If the “favorites” are fetishized and reduced to a couple characteristics by the privileged group, what happens to the unlucky ones? Do privileged people think they’re unlucky or unfavorable to them on purpose out of spite or are they trying to exist in a system that will hurt them and use them either way. Great vid Tee

I'm a black woman who has dated all ethnicities of men. Dating white men for me was a bit tricky as I never knew what to expect, but let me tell you, anytime and I do mean anytime a white guy asked me out and I agreed to the date, I made sure to request a restaurant at the blackest area I knew of for the first date and if we dated past the first, I requested to go to the whitest area- because you will not deny me or hide me. Also anytime they referred to me as an ebony queen, nubian princess, exotic blah blah blah, I was OUT- and by out I mean at any stage of the date, be it appetizers, dinner, etc. I collected my purse and walked straight out the door of the restaurant.

As a Korean culture enthusiast, this is a MAJOR issue within the community also. Black fangirls will search any proofs than a Korean celebrity likes us. Full videos made BY black women of video clips where korean celebrities show the minimum courtesy to a black girl and slap a dozen of heart eye emojis. Those men are known by name within the community and intensely celebrated. But again, it's a trauma response to the racially insensitive community that constantly ostracizes us.

I don’t know if this happens very often now, but in old literature, women with light complexions were often described as being “creamy” “peaches and cream,” “milk-white” and “honey-blonde.” Perhaps these terms are no longer In common use, but I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to read that the heroine of an old romance novel was a “nymph, with skin like fresh cream and a rosebud for a mouth.” Or some such nonsense. 😂

Something that bothers me is the fact that many of these guys like to pick and choose which "type" of Black woman they like, "respect" and advocate for. They'll go hard for the "urban" hypebaes with shoe game, hoops, laid edges, glossy lips, tiny waists and big butts but will disrespect Black women with afros and bohemian or alternative style, etc. On the other hand, some of them will praise the natural girls and degrade Black women with weaves or vice versa. They'll hype up light skin women then disrespect dark skin women. They'll fetishize dark skin women, they'll fetishize curly haired mixed girls and try to pass it off as admiration and "respect". Don't say you love Black women when you only love and "respect" Black women who have an image that you like. If you support Black women, as you claim, then that respect should be extended to ALL Black women not just the ones who you find sexually or romantically attractive. Respect should never be contingent on whether or not you find someone attractive. A lot of these "I Stan Black Girls" and "Protect Black Women" social media boys haven't learned that yet.
