The reason behind Togashi making and spending so much time on The Greed Island game was his desire to make a tactical card game manga like Yu Gi Oh. And thinking he wouldn't be able, due to his health he implemented that desire into the Greed Island Arc.

Greed Island is one of my favorite arcs, I was shocked when I found out a lot of people don't like it.

When I was first experiencing the greatness that is Hunter X Hunter I thought that was going to be a sword art online style tangent with no real impact other than a clue. Needless to say I wasn't expecting one of the greatest game related anime to suddenly happen.

To be fair, Togashi probably went overkill with the cards because he had ideas for the longest time. If you don't quite understand what I mean, imagine this: Through inspiration, you come up with idea after idea, for years upon years. Speaking from experience, eventually there HAS to be an outlet. It's like that law of physics where energy builds and HAS to find a way out. It can't just stick around and be piled on forever. Togashi is a writer I greatly respect. One of the few times I've memorized an author's name.

Probably my 2nd favorite arc, this was really gave the boys a much needed power boost and it was pretty fun like the first arc. Only thing I didn't like was that Leorio and Kurapika took a HUGE backseat for hundreds chapters, I wish they could've came along in Greed Island too. The final fight was one of my all time favorites, seeing Gon have his throat crushed and get beat around that really made tear up and go wild because I wanted him to actually one a boss fight for once. Lastly, I shipped KillianXBiscuit up until I found out she's an old lady in her 50's like Tsunade.

I think you missed the most important part regarding the nen system in greed island. All the cards have restrictions how to get them. So the more complicated the restriction to obtain a card is, the more powerful can it be by the "restriction->power" rule of nen. Because the card only materializes the moment the restriction is cleared.

greed island has always been one of my favourite arcs, though i do believe the chimera ant arc and phantom troupe arc are more developed and are better overall, the greed island arc in general was always just so fun for me. first of all it introduces my personal favourite character of the series, biscuit krueger, who is just an amazing character who honestly needs way more attention and appreciation. the arc itself is also very crucial to the storyline as it's probably the main training arc of the series, where gon and killua learn the more complicated and extended techniques of nen and gon actually finds more about his father and where he is and what he's doing which is gon's goal. it also gives the phantom troupe some closure, instead of completely cutting them out of the series (until they appear again in the chimera ant arc) we get to see them after the events of losing chrollo and how they work and act around it, also them actually searching for the one who can help their leader. and it also gives the show so much more diversity, hxh already had so many genres but adding a rpg card game? like wow that's extremely unexpected for a shounen series that isn't completely based on that concept already. although the arc does have it's downsides like genthru who is just a weak villain (not just physically, but motive and character wise), especially compared to the phantom troupe and the chimera ants. overall it's a very fun arc in my opinion, as it allows some more calm and less serious plot lines to take over and we just get to see killua and gon developing as hunters and nen users. ALSO THE NEW GAME COMING OUT BASED OFF OF GREEN ISLAND? i hope this film (whether it's a movie, ova or actual series) is able to explore the game a lot more especially because hxh 2011 gave it so much world building but never fleshed it out and showed it off.

That Nen-Minecraft comparison is damn awesome. Especislly if you think about it a little more. The way Ging and his friends created that game is in my opinion very simmilar to that minecraft calculator. You have no idea how it's done and it shows that there are insane skills to aquire that seem way beyond of the concepts original capabilities. Greed Island is the embodyment of what we don't know and understand about nen yet.

If anyone here has not watched Hunter x Hunter, let me make a case real quick for you to watch it. Now, I'm sure a lot of people, like me, think that the shounen genre is over-saturated and very predictable, but if you come into HxH with that idea, prepare to be shook. There is a reason why Hunter x Hunter is #5 on the top anime of all time list from Myanimelist, and is the second highest ranked shounen after Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. If you thought One Piece had some great character building, HxH has been being made for 19 months longer than One Piece, yet the Gon Pirates have only JUST entered their Grand Line. You probably thought all shounen villains were there to be hated by the audience and defeated by the main character, but when was the last time you met one that changed so drastically over the course of their arc that you are actually moved to literal tears when they're gone? When was the last time you watched a shounen where you actually have to question which side you should be rooting for and that even makes makes you question the meaning of life as a whole. Watch HxH, and if you don't like it, you can sue me for all I'm worth. I guarantee you will.

I have been saying for years that greed island is so amazing, also because when the arc came upon use (i was reading back then) we thought it would be a meeh arc, but it was just amazing combining so many amazing element of games etc. into HXH. The camara ant arc is pretty good but I think Yorknew was better, simply because the Phantom Troupe is amazing.
