Tekton vs Milwaukee has been something I have been curious about for awhile.
Tekton has been around for awhile. They have products in a lot of major stores these days. While walking through Meijer, I was surprised to see their 45 piece 3/8" drive socket set was only $45.97. By all means, I was picking that up to see what it was all about! I brought the Tekton kit home and found that it was pretty good! The ratchet might suck, but the kit has everything you need and for HALF THE PRICE!
The Tekton Socket set would be great for beginners of all ages. A great first socket set for anyone. It's cheap, it's pretty darn good, it comes with a lifetime warranty.

Tekton has upgraded the set since you purchased yours. The ratchet is now a 90 tooth and it is much nicer. I recently spent a few dollars more and purchased the Tekton 74 piece set. It goes from 1/4 to 1" and 6 to 24mm with no skips. As with yours you get both shallow and deep sockets. Another guy I know bought the new 90 tooth ratchet and it fits in his case in place of the old one. I definitely love that Milwaukee case. They out did themselves there.

I have been using Tekton ratchets and sockets for about 2 years now. No failures. I restore old cars as a hobby, and I am not a professional mechanic, but I have a few friends there are professional mechanics and they are the ones that recommended Tekton, when I was looking at replacing some of worn out tools. The all recommended Tekton or gear wrench or hitting up pawn shops, Craigslist or estates sales for used tool truck brands. My favorite ratchet is the 3/8 swivel head from Tekton. Best ratchet. Have ever used.i bought a second one just in case anything ever go wrong with the first one.

Most people I know prefer quick release because it causes less fatigue when swapping sockets especially with dirty hands and it holds a socket on better just FYI .

Also, I inevitably have stuff that gets bound up and tries to leave a socket or extension behind. Quick release helps in those matters. And I like an 11” long 3/8” ratchet enough that I ended up buying a Snap on just because I wanted something near bulletproof and it was all I could find that was worth a F.

The difference is down time. True they both have a replacement warranty but the question is are you ok with being without a replacement for a few days or weeks in the middle of a project. Personally if you use the right tool for the job they should rarely break.
@lv0ll9
@lv0ll9 5 жыл бұрын
Personally rather have a steel type that lasts, having to go back to the store or whatever every time something breaks can get real old if it happens alot. Its like chasing your tail, sure you get a new socket, ratchet, whatever, but it'd be cumbersome to go back every time a socket breaks. But thats just my opinion
@iknowwhatyoudid9991
@iknowwhatyoudid9991 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you 100%, even if you stop what you are doing and go back and replace a broken socket, if the quality of the socket allowed it to break on a tight fastener then replacing it only means that the one you just replaced it with will probably break as well and you will now be left with another broken socket and your fastener still tight, and if you have to replace the socket four times to get one bolt out chances are it will be rounded off more and more every time a socket breaks, a good strong socket is the solution even if it means breaking a ratchet, just about everyone I know has more than one ratchet but they don't always have duplicate sockets especially if they are just starting out, I still have some Taiwan sockets that I have had for about 40 years, and there is a few times that I broke a good USA made Craftsman socket, especially removing rusted bumper bolts on old pickup trucks, and I would go to the basement and bring out a Taiwan socket 6 point and would have my fingers crossed but then was very surprised that it removed the Rusted nut, after replacing that Craftsman socket I would take that Taiwan socket back to the basement and store it where it has been sitting. On the shelf and I still have all those Taiwan tools that I bought when I was 16, and I still have my USA Craftsman's and they are good tools and take a beating, the Craftsman tools did not fail until we got excessively worn and stressed and believe me I did occasionally abuse them but the good thing about them were was the very tight tolerance and they fit the Fasteners very firmly, I also have the old usa-made Napa's another fine member of my tool chest, it's a socket or wrench doesn't fit firmly on the fastener that is a big problem, hell even the Pittsburgh sockets from Harbor Freight have proved their self to be really decent as far as fit and price, as far as their wrenches I would have to say no simply because even if they fit well when there are no it doesn't take them long to get sloppy on the box end and as far as the open-end side, I have never seen one that wasn't sloppy from the get-go and it doesn't take much to wash the end spread apart.

I ordered the Tekton 1/4 through 1/2" socket sets but immediately found a deal on the Milwaukee Packout sets. I had both for a few days before returning the Tekton. The Milwaukee socket trays are a much better fit for my toolbox, and I prefer the Milwaukee feel, fit, and finish. Warranty replacement would also be easier for me as there are several stores near me who keep most items in stock, although I doubt I will have such a need. Search for "Strongest Ratchet Brand Ultimate Test SnapOn Tekton ICON GearWrench" on KZfaq and notice that the Tekton 3/8" rachet went to 680 ft-lbs before the handle bent. The mechanism did not fail! 680 ft-lbs. is in the 3/4" drive range! Even after fatiguing the metal by bending it back and forth the Tekton still came in at 293 ft-lbs. Price vs quality is always a consideration even for full time techs; I bought Stanley black socket sets with ratchets and lifetime warranty. The 1/4 & 3/8 ratchets broke twice during the time I owned that set; to their credit, called Stanley and they sent replacements out the next day. But, warranty means nothing if it's broken. I bought the sets for the car & truck as carry tools, gave my set away after breaking the 3/8 ratchet a second time. My friend got the other set, he replaced the ratchets with ones from Autozone? and he's very happy with it. From a cost stand point, that was the least expensive way to go. What I can tell you is that the Stanley black sockets fit well and are strong, especially considering the price.

you say (But, warranty means nothing if it's broken). How True. Replacement time, even if small. Time is money. So either way a person will pay for it. Either Up front and get it over with. Or in the long term (with time and killed projects and the weather changes and postpone projects) Just buy quality up front. It might cost more. But it's an illusion. Time is money too. I agree that the warranty makes longevity less of a priority since there’s a local store within 30 min of nearly everyone in the lower foldy-ate. With that being said, that’s looking at it from a homeowners perspective. That way of thinking is garbage for tool sets used in remote areas such as Alaska or overseas. I also consider the longevity far more important when considering tools for the rv and boat. If you break down on the road, and especially in the middle of a lake, you want and need a set of tools you can depend on since running back to the store isn’t an option. We have so many options available to us nowadays a man can and should pick and choose when to skimp out on the super coupon special at harbor freight and when to pony up and get the top shelf shit. Brand loyalty is generally expensive and not worth it unless having a pretty toolbox is your priority.

The Milwaukee set isn’t out of line on price. The tekton set is overly cheap. That said tekton tools are decent. It’s a good value. I’d probably buy the tekton set, just because the Milwaukee set doesn’t excite me. Quality does matter to guys like me. I don’t care about having tools break from a replacement perspective. They all have warranty anymore, and even if not....collateral damage. Oh well. When I’m really busy I treat tools almost like consumable sometimes. My issue is cheap shitty tools failing to do the job, and this happens a lot. This brings me to my bitch about all of these cheap tools flooding the market. I’m glad people have the option to buy “decent” affordable tools. The problem is they’ve pushed actual real good tools out of the market. I could used to just drive to town and buy proto, Wright, sk, Armstrong, etc tools. If I want any of those brands anymore, I have to order them in, except Armstrong because they’re out of business. Now, I can buy a truckload of husky, kobalt, duralast, oem, Stanley, harbor freight....and I can get gearwrench and Carlyle. Some of that stuff is fine for professional use. Some of it flat sucks. It still pushed the tools I actually like out though, and it pisses me off.

I realize this is an older video, but I'll chime in on something you said early on in the video. You said there isn't anything different with a lifetime warranty, so why go for a tool that may be made differently, or with harder materials etc. You re correct in that if I have two tools, and both are lifetime replacement warranty. However, if I am constantly breaking one tool, and that tool takes me a few days, to a few weeks to exchange, or the other tool breaks less often, or if it does break, I can simply drive to the nearest Home Depot and have it exchanges and get back to work, I'd much rather have the convenience of the quicker turn around time. That being said, if all sets were of equal size/tool count, then I'd go for the brand that gives me the better tool with the better/faster down time. I mean, If I am constantly breaking a socket, and possibly a knuckle, then what good is that warranty, if I am out of that tool and a lot of pain. But I do agree that the amount of tools Tekton tends to give you in that price point means a lot. Heck, even if the prices were closer, you still get more sockets and tools with the Tekton. But one other thing I like about the Milwaukee tool is their Packout, and being that I am in the construction/trades, their tool set up works well for that part of my business. I'd have the Tekton in the garage, for working on other projects and cars etc.

With Milwaukee you have to either return the whole kit or send the individual Rachet/socket to the manufacturer. Its not like the old craftsman days, where you could walk into sears and swap out a broken rachet no questions asked...
@jmackinjersey1
@jmackinjersey1 3 жыл бұрын
@@bengrant4044 What is wrong with that? The Milwaukee sets are ideally kitted up so it isn't a lot to exchange. But I did see the individual sockets listed on the HD website, but it also states "not available online or in store". So I called HD and they told me it is a simple kit exchange for the first year. So I called my local Milwaukee repair shop who told me that they also don't carry the individual sockets. Their website says to return it to the "factory" repair facility. " Return the hand tool product to a MILWAUKEE factory Service Center location freight prepaid and insured, is required. A copy of the proof of purchase should be included with the return product. This warranty does not apply to damage that MILWAUKEE determines to be from, misuse, alterations, abuse, normal wear and tear, lack of maintenance or accidents." Just remember to make a copy or two of your original receipt. That is one of the only things I don't like about Milwaukee Tools, they make their warranty only applicable to the original purchaser.

@jmackinjersey1 3 жыл бұрын
@@bengrant4044 As far as Craftsman, you can walk into a Sears or Lowe's and make an even exchange. Buuuuuutttttt, I would not do that with any of my US Made Craftsman hand tools and receive a Chinesium junk tool though. I happen to have a few ratchets that need to be exchanged, but I am going to try and see if my local Tool Truck will rebuild them for me. As far as HD's in house brand Husky, they offer a NQA exchange like Craftsman does. But I haven't seen any US Made Husky tools in ages, so that to me would be a fair China/China exchange.

@@jmackinjersey1 I was merely pointing out that Milwaukee's lifetime warranty, isn't as simple as you made it seem.... If you happen to keep them in a rolling tool box or split into multiple locations such as a go bag and a tool chest you would need to gather all your tools, and place them in the original container in order to exchange them with a receipt... Rather then bring in the individual broken part like you would with sears/lowes.

Thanks for doing this review. I was hoping you might have reviewed GearWrench at some point too, but I was considering the Tekton socket set and a full Milwaukee 3/8 SAE and metric set. While your practical points of cost vs lifetime warranties are on point, there are three problems with warranties you didn't consider. The first one is the quality of the product being produced may degrade over time. This is true of Craftsmen, and I've heard this is happening with GearWrench. On the opposite side, I've read that Tekton have been improving their quality over time. So replacing a broken item may not be as good (or perhaps better) as the one you started with. The second point is your location. I live in Canada (aka Canakistan). But even depending on where you live in the USA, you may be better off with one company than another based on how close a shop is to manage your warranty. For me, while Tekton is cheaper and I've heard they have amazing customer service (in the USA), I can only buy it from Amazon, so in terms of dealing with a warranty, the Milwaukee is a far better option if you need the item replaced quickly. I suppose a third consideration is the deprecation of the lifetime warranty. As an example, in Canada, Canadian Tire sells an in house brand of tools (Mastercraft). They use to be ok (although I don't think they used S2) and have a lifetime warranty. After a number of years, they ended up putting out a "premium" line of their house brand and removing the lifetime warranty from their now "lower" tier branded tools. So you may or may not be able to get a replacement anymore for your tools you purchased with a "lifetime warranty" (unless you kept the receipt), and, even if you do get the replacement, the quality is worse and the replacement is no longer warrantied for life. Sadly, too, if you buy a set (eg., tap set), you may need to have the entire set replaced instead of one piece.

Tekton tools are awesome. I'm an industrial electrician and used Tekton for years without any issues. The only thing I would disagree with you on is quality not really mattering because of a lifetime warranty. Speaking for myself, there's hardly anything worse that's job related than to be in the middle of working on something critical and have a tool break. Then you have to stop what you're doing and scrounge around for another or find someone to borrow from, etc. I want good quality, too. And I'd be willing to spend $100 instead of $50 to get it if it means I don't have to waste my time with the warranty of poor quality tools often. You're still WAY below Snap-on, Matco, etc. But, like I said, I've had no issues with my Tekton tools and I beat the hell out of them every day.

well said as someone who was a mechanic that is also why i have a bunch of snap-on tools for most of them the failure rate is far lower than other brands. also cheaper tools are more likely to rust and fail in other ways you didnt think possible.... and how comfortable a ratchet feels makes a HUGE difference there is a reason i have snapon tools. Granted its a 32 in long half in anvil flex head ratchet but that thing cost me more than that entire Milwaukee kit lol. If you don't agree with me, I'll give you a socket made of play dough and every time it breaks you can send it back to me and I'll fix it for you; you'll just have to pay the shipping cost. Good video. My opinion: about the only time you run into 12 point fasters is if your a mechanic or a very very handy DIY’er and in that case you should have a 12 point set of 3/8 and 1/2 inch sockets fof the rare case you actually need them. The rathers that come in tektin sets are garbage but the sockets are complete sets and GOLD! I use the tekton sets at work professionally every day snd they never let me down. I use a 1/4” set chrome. 3/8 set chrome, 1/2 inch chrome set. And a full 1/2 inch impact combination of shallow/deep/metric/sae. They are killer. But I never use the ratchets that come with they. They are too bulky and clunky. I prefer long handled comfort grip flex heads most of the time and use a few very stubby ratchets occasionally. Tekton has some great individual ratchets for sale. I just wish they put better ratchets in the kits. Great video. Im a diesel mechanic out of SO-CAL and have ne er bore a single tekton socket.

Not only do they feel like they're never going to break, but they also fit perfectly on every fastener I've used them on which tells me their attention to detail is on point. I also own the max bite wrenches and it's the same thing. I'm not a professional by any means so I can't speak for tools like Snap-On or others like it. Not sure I'd use the words "based out of" when describing Tekton. In a day and age where we are starting to look for "Made in USA" and wish we listened to our parents when they told us not to buy foreign junk, that's misleading. Yes, the "headquarters" of Tekton is in Michigan. The "headquarters" of Milwaukee is in Wisconsin. Both companies have most of their tools made in China. Both companies have a few tools made in the USA, probably something no one ever buys, simply so they can say they have some USA manufacturing.

Subject to certain exceptions, MILWAUKEE will repair or replace any hand tool which, after examination, is determined by MILWAUKEE to be defective in material or workmanship for the lifetime of the tool. Return the hand tool product to a MILWAUKEE factory Service Center location freight prepaid and insured, is required. A copy of the proof of purchase should be included with the return product. This warranty does not apply to damage that MILWAUKEE determines to be from, misuse, alterations, abuse, normal wear and tear, lack of maintenance or accidents." Thus I can't walk into the store I bought these and get a broken one replaced, and can not mail it to a service center without a receipt to the tool purchase. WHO keeps lame paper receipts that fade away after time?? The Tekton warranty is simpler than simple. Take a picture of the broken Tekton tool, send it to Tekton and they replace it with a new one in the mail. NO receipts, NO send the broken tool for review,etc etc NO BS. The ONLY reason I bought the Milwaukee was I do NOT like the Tekton round handle ratchet, but that's just me. The Milwaukee set was on sale for $69.00 and the ratchet by itself is $ 40.00 so the whole kit was a better buy for the price. I DO like the squared off ends to the Milwaukee sockets so you can use a wrench on them in tight places. I'm happy but prefer the warranty of the Tekton products!

I'd rather call an 800 number and spend $10 having a replacement shipped to me rather than fill out paperwork for a warranty claim then waiting a month... or driving half an hour one way spending gas, etc. Really, you guys put too much emphasis into a warranty. I turn wrenches everyday to survive. Tekton has a phenomenal "Anytime" warranty. Email a pic and they send the replacement. No proof of purchase needed and shipping is free. Milwaukee is pretty but not practical for techs due to their limited warranty issues. I have a gambit of tool brands in my cart and I'll put some of my tekton tools up against tool truck offerings confidently. I use sunex impacts but my chrome hand sockets are either tekton or snap-on.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i5qHoN14tLGzdp8.html I showed the full version of this video to my father. He called BS. I happened to have the exact ratchet. We put it on some old wheel lugs with no torque meter. Three lugs and an hour later we finally stripped it but the anvil never broke, didn't even twist. It's a non-quick release so it's stronger but yeah..... He was sold.

When people review a socket set that's all six point, they complain that it's not 12. When people review a socket set that's all 12 point, they complain that it's not 6. 12 point sockets are pointless. If you're in a position to encounter a 4 or 12 point fastener, you kind of know it before hand, it's not something that surprises you.

Horrible review your only focusing at price point - how about reliability? How much pressure can each withstand - are the materials truly the same and if milwaukee is charging a $100 is it because they are engineered and designed and built with high quality materials because i’ve grown up with mechanics and there advice has always been buy good tools your knuckles will thank you. You keep talking about lifetime warranty but if im changing my breaks and the cheaper socket breaks now i have to waste time and effort to replace it. What if it keeps happening versus spending the money on a higher guality tool.

Thank you for the comment! You make a great point! I too am a firm believer in quality tools. I own a lot of brands. I strongly believe in brands like SnapOn that cost hundreds more in some cases. In my experience, regardless of what company you go with, the standard chrome sockets are all made of chrome vanadium. The only real tangible difference between brands can be the sidewall thickness and the alloys percentage of chromium and carbon to change how hard the steel really is. However, this percentage is often kept secret and no average joe knows the real answer. With that being said, the sockets could be identical in hardness and in build quality. The “better” , or just more expensive, name brand socket could fail because of different forces being exerted onto weak points. I believe these kits are much in the same. The design is just slightly different. Beware, there are many higher end brands out there that are white labeled. Meaning, it is the exact same product, coming from the exact same factory, but each have a different name brand on it! We have seen this often with pliers. I believe that someone that is looking for a starter kit will get better value from the Tekton kit. That was the purpose of my review. I have only found the fail point of a couple sockets in my lifetime of mechanical work. If you use the right tool for the job and increase your drive size when needed to 1/2”, etc. you will rarely break a socket. If I do run into issues where the reliability is an issue with this set, then I will be sure to return to my review and update it as needed.

Sockets are the worst thing to spend extra money on. There's literally no benefit. Spend your money on pliers/wrenches/better ratchets/pry bars/chisels etc(tools that actually need high quality materials to do the job). It's like paying $3000 for a super computer and playing pong on it. You literally get no extra benefit from playing it on a $30 computer. On top of that the USA made sockets only chrome the outside, so the insides rust all the time, whereas the taiwanese sockets are usually fully chromed. I would still avoid the chinese. I always avoid chinese, unless it's very light duty task, or I want to destroy it.

(10:42) "Milwaukee's still gotta work on their pricing." Okay, a year later they did that. You can buy a 106-piece 1/4" AND 3/8" SAE AND Metric set for $230. Would you change your mind now? I certainly don't agree with a lot of what you said in your comparison. You are comparing $50 with $100, and saying you will eventually replace the ratchet in the cheaper set with a better one that fits the box. A decent ratchet is $25 or so, right? So, now you are comparing $75 to $100 and you have a goal of spending time trying to find a ratchet that fits. Were you able to do that? How much time did you waste trying to do that? I have a crappy 1/4" ratchet right now, and it drives me nuts. Another thing, you didn't even mention one of the unique features of the Milwaukee set. Did you not notice the sockets are square to prevent them from rolling away? If you have ever uncomfortably crawled under a 3/4-ton truck and then had to get out to grab a socket that rolled away, THAT IS A HUGE FEATURE. I'm actually in the market for a 1/4" metric set for working on dirt bikes and I think I'll just buy the $229 set I mentioned. My socket collection has been jacked up over the years by use, the kids, and my bad memory.

Tekton and Milwaukee? Honestly it all comes down to the quality not quantity. Milwaukee 28pc set you stated about over $100. Tekton 45pc set you stated about $45.00. Well Tekton more quantity less price, and looks shiny. Milwaukee less quantity, pricey, but quality, looks very shiney, the design of the sockets well thought out, the drive ratchet smooth but handel it a bit long for better grip. And for exchange, just go to any home depot and they will exchange the product if defective with no problem right then and there, but as for Tekton, you will have to take a pic of the defective tool, send it to them and wait 5 to 10 business to get it in the mail. And thats the difference of Tekton and Milwaukee tools. But hay thats just my opinion.
