For those wondering the history: On March 15, 1952, while shelling enemy positions at Songjin, USS Wisconsin (BB-64) lost her temper. Coming in close to shore, North Korean forces fired back at the vessel, their 155 mm shells hitting her, but causing no damage. Only three sailors were injured. In retaliation, Wisconsin aimed her guns at the enemy position and fired the most impressive broadside, completely obliterating the North Korean artillery. With a quick wit, the USS Buck (DD-761), her escort, signaled, “TEMPER TEMPER.”

Remind me of a story a family friend would tell about when he was an Army Ranger in Vietnam (paraphrasing). His unit came under fire during a mission to scout out a hill, so he called in air support. After getting repeatedly told no air support was available, he was informed he could get support from a call sign he wasn't familiar with. Not wanting to be particular about the kind of support, he agreed to what was offered and was told to triple-check his position and the target coordinates. What followed was absolutely massive explosion on the hill that, "damn near gave [him] a heart attack". Turns out the call sign was for the USS New Jersey, which fired its 16-inch guns at the target. After that, his unit just walked up what was left of the hill and counted the bodies. From that day forward he always requested that call sign when requesting fire support.

The Iowa class battleship's main guns were 9 Mark 7 16"/50cal (yes, 50 cal, not .50 cal. In canons caliber is bore diameters, the canon is 50 bore diameters long) canons. The HE shells it fired were 2700lbs each. The firing rate of a single gun was 2 rpm, or about every 30 seconds if it didnt have to move the canon very far between the reloading position and the computed firing position. Accuracy was considered to be about the size of half a tennis ball court.....within a range of about 20 to 24 miles away depending on weather conditions. With the ammo stored on board, an Iowa's Mk7 main guns could send a 2700lbs of HE 20 miles and land every shot within a 40ft square....every 5 seconds (3.33s if you wanna split hairs down to improbably fast reloads and firing delay)....for 65 minutes straight before depleting its onboard shell loadout. For my metric friends thats 9 40.64cm/50cal canons, delivering 1224.69kg of HE, 32.18km, within an area of 12.19m, every half a decasecond, for 45.138 .beats straight. What? Didnt think the American knew about silly time measurements in base 10? We sunk an island, son. Get with the program. Bonus fun fact: The fire control system had a bank of switches that selected the firing pattern, with 3 trigger handles in the fire control tower (with another set on the fire control station plotter (the mechanical all analog computer, there is a neat video of how the cams, gears, and rollers instantly handled the maths involved with making a shot, I highly suggest watching it even if you have that unaddressed trauma from school and think you dont like math. You can do math, you've just been taught wrong), and each turret had its own controls inside). One signaled a shot (a bell/buzzer/klaxon), one for manual control, and one for automated firing by way of the computer which waited for the boat to roll level, then fired in the set pattern. Individually, sequential, or the glorious FULL BROADSIDE SALVO!!! Imagine letting off a cumulative 12 feet and 12 tons of HE......Im wet just thinking about it.....

My grandfather fought in WWII and Korea. 20 year man. He got the 21 gun salute at his funeral after he died in his 70s. Made it to the top of the noncoms in the army. Spent the last ten years making his only grandchild a happy childhood. Real American hero

Three years later, my dad Thomas Mehling (1937 - 2001) enlisted in the Navy and wound up assigned to the USS Wisconsin, so even though I don't see the number 64, I've heard the story, so knew what ship. Thanks for the crossover and tribute to the "whisky".

Last summer I was able to take 25 Cub Scouts to the Wisconsin for a tour and overnight sleepover. They all had a blast, and my son was able to raise the flag on the fantail the next morning. Many thanks to your dad for the service to our country!
