Just a quick one this week. While travelling to a friends in Lincoln I had to stop off to visit this lonely tower with a bit of history. Although it doesn't look like much, this tower once belonged to the Knights Templar. This order of religeous warriors were at one point one of the wealthiest and most powerful organisations in Europe. They played a big part in the Crusades and were considered some of the most elite soldiers in Christendom.
However fear of their growing power and rumours of heretical initiation rites led to the powers that be turning against them. Eventually banning and destroying the order. The abrubt disapaerance of such a powerful group led to a lot of conspiracy theories and stories of secret organisations and shadowy cabals that persist to today.
The tower in Temple Breur is all that is left of a larger church complex. It's stands by itself in the middle of a farm with little fanfare or signage. There are no shops, no facilities and barely any signs. But still it's interesting to go see a little piece of this forgetten history.
