When I was at my peak as a Beatles fan, I sang the praises of John and Paul, but as I got older and more mature, with a better set of priorities, I came to admire George and Ringo more, and they are now clearly my favorites. It was significant to me that, in all my research into The Beatles, I learned of conflicts between all of them, except between George and Ringo. It was also significant to me that I came to appreciate George's music increasingly over the years.

Starting in 1967 I found some pics of George in life magazine etc plus then I added his pic from the White album and made a collage for my tiny bedroom. He was my hero and a philosophical guidepost for me. This remained true until his tragic death.

From what I've gathered over the years, I Me Mine was what drove George to temporarily quit the Beatles during the Let It Be film. The other 3 were rehearsing it while John and Yoko were dancing around Twickenham studio. Later that day was when George and John supposedly had their row and George going off about Yoko right to John's face. After that, he split and that was when John, Paul and Ringo started jamming with Yoko. John told the others that if George didn't come back, they should continue with Eric Clapton. Paul said no, that wouldn't do. A few days later, George did come back, but they moved the rehearsals to Apple, the Concert was shelved, and Billy Preston was brought in. Because of the argument they had early on in the film, everyone thought it was Paul's fault George split. It may have contributed to his splitting, but the real reason was John's lack of helping on George's songs and Yoko's constant presense, not to mention John's inability to bring any quality new songs to the sessions. George always gave 100% to most of the Lennon and McCartney songs. That was evident during rehearsing of Get Back, when him and Paul were discussing the sequencing of the verses, chorus, etc. Look, these guys had a bond that only the 4 of them will ever know about. You don't go through that whole Beatles thing without it. They were Brothers that loved each other but also got on each other's nerves, just like anyone else. Too much written about how they hated each other at the end. You cannot make so many great and meaningful songs with that much hatred. I've never believed all that Let It Be hype from the get go. Can't wait to see the new Documentary.
@d5u2ke
@d5u2ke 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree things couldn't have been all that bad and I am sick of that line of hype. Most people don't realize that the release of Let It Be was held up while the Beatles reunited with George Martin and recorded their wonderful Abbey Road album. So while Let It Be was the last album released, Abbey Road was the last one they recorded. When I saw Paul McCartney several years back, days before Paul's 68th birthday, Paul and his crack band did 36 songs. 18 of them were Beatles tunes. And of those 18, fully a third of them were from Let It Be! So Paul must not have been completely disappointed with the Let It Be album!!!! I have always loved this album!

In fact, George fell out with John after Imagine, and was in a bad spot until John’s death. One of the reason that Paul wrote the song “This One”.
@braemtes23

On the last two albums, Paul was really there for George. He helped him with ideas for I, Me, Mine and Paul did not become annoyed when he was told his lyric changes did not work for George's song. On Abbey Road, Paul's beautiful harmonies and bass lines proved that Paul gave his best for George's songs: Something and Here Comes the Sun. John and Yoko were in an accident so George, Paul and Ringo were alone on these songs.

George always struck me as a guy who worked hard at his craft, whether it be song writing or guitar playing. With each album it seemed he was improving at a geometric progression. The guitars on Abbey Road being light years from Meet The Beatles. By the end of the Beatles he proved to be the equal of L & Mc as a writer.

in a video themed solely around the ego, i'm laughing slightly when you asked "Why do you think John was behaving poorly to George? Why was he not interested in supporting his friend's song?" answer: ego. John was a real human with all the flaws inherent to his character, and let's be honest, he had a strong narcissistic streak which always ends up affecting close friends/family. (John was always my favourite, but he could be a real bastard to people he cared about, especially when someone else was encroaching on his 'attention'. He had to learn to share. My son and i have been working on some variations of I Me Mine, and every time i play it on piano, i can hear George's voice in the melody line, reaching and faltering but pushing with all the heart he has in him. You hear his sadness and his lamentation, but he's always got this lovely 'roll with it' attitude that makes it still feel surmountable rather than hopeless. I'm glad he kept pushing and writing--his songs touch on a meaninful dimension that might've been overlooked/underrepresented by the other band members. He was a non-confrontational boundary-pusher; he didn't shy away from difficult things when they needed to be addressed. George is a hero. :)

A well done video. I was skeptical watching a 13 minute video about a 3 minute song but i learned a new insight I had thought the song was about the greed shown about choosing a new manager and the eventual break-up. The ego idea fits better (and is straight from George).

John also incorporated influences in his songs that weren’t traditional rock. He later admitted that he was distracted by other things but basically loved rock & roll. Interestingly, he said “Magical Mystery Tour” was his favorite Beatle LP “because it’s so weird.” Obviously, it’s their least rock & roll LP. He also said that in hindsight he realized that songs like “How Do You Sleep?” & “Steel and Glass” were as much about him as anyone else. Maybe it was his own insecurities tempering his feelings about the flamenco version. I love John but he was a walking contradiction at times. Personally, I think it was a case of broadening their musical palette. IMO that’s one of the things that made them the GOAT. More than any other artist they blurred the lines to re-define rock.

You know, Hollyhobs, in watching this video (and your series of videos) it strikes me: 1) there is SO MUCH MORE to every Beatle song than just the duration of its existence. So much more context, so many more links to other things in life; 2) it's why the Beatles were so important in our individual lives and the world at large; and 3) I'm not sure if each song, each link and the joy we receive from each song makes us more connected to the universe, or if we're all in a cult.

It's funny, for as much as George would complain about Paul & his views of Harrison's writing...Paul is ALWAYS present and playing on the songs. In fact I'd argue that two of McCartney's best basslines are "While My Guitar..." and especially "Something", that's one of his best. Lennon is frequently absent or doesn't participate...or just plays some slop. On some of the "Get Back" sessions tapes I've heard, Lennon is just butchering some of George's best songs that would end up on "All Things Must Pass"..."Let It Down", "Isn't It A Pity", etc. Paul may have been a complete pain in the ass during those days, but you can't say he wasn't involved and putting forth an effort on George's songs...considering that George & John were close that had to really hurt George.

I like the duality of this song, the verses are very serious and have a message to convey, as opposed to the simple rock and roll " I, I, me, me, mine " break. In any case, I very often find myself listing to older original music to escape from what I hear on the radio nowadays, the cookie cutter pop divas of both genders that wallow in stagnation and their outright refusal to dare to be different. We had the Beatles and the Stones, the kids have Bieber and Pink. That's what it's come to.

George saw John as a leader and Paul more as a comrade. He took instruction better from John than from Paul, and that explains why he was so mellow about John's obvious disinterest but pushed back at Paul's suggestions (which were not as good as what George was doing, but he resented other Paul input that was more on the mark).
