Steve examines a bizarre Mack U-series truck with the cab offset over TWO FEET to the driver-side of the frame. Why would Mack build such an oddity? And what does the hood have in common with a Fourth-Gen Chevy Corvette? And why did the passenger’s knees hit his chin? Watch and all will be revealed!

As kids our favorite Mack expression was, "It looks like it got hit by a Mack truck!" when seeing something that had been utterly destroyed. Mack probably appreciated the publicity of the unofficial slogan anyway. 🤔

My Dad had a 66 DM mack with a log loader on it. I rode many miles on that dog house. I was amazed at how my dad would shift gears with 2 sticks. He'd put his left arm through wheel and run main stick and use right for the secondary. Amazing stuff. I learned how to drive a rig in that Old Mack. It had a PTO and he'd climb on loader above cab and he'd tell me which way to go when we sorted logs. Pull up, stop, clutch, PTO let oit set throttle at around 1500 and pit out riggers down and load up Walnut and then drive up or back and unload. That was his only loader 30 years ago so I'd run saw to cut up trees into logs, load the best, junk, blocking, Amish etc, sort out, load freightliner and log trailer. Alot of moving slowly but I can say that I've driven that Mack with almost a entire load of logs to fit a 40 foot trailer, and she would just GO. Mud, rain, snow she went. Wed sometimes take it in the woods down log roads a truck had a hard time and it was like a tank. I was upset to see her go. I had a huge place in my heart for her. It was weird looking, ugly green, but it held so many memories with Dad.

When I was a kid in the 70s, my uncle Frank drove for St. Johnsbury in Maspeth Queens. He drove a red Mack 600 with the "side winder cab",as he called it. He would bring it around to visit my grandmother during the day. If us kids were there, he would take us for a ride around the block with it. I remember thinking WOW this is great! I can see in my mind until today, how he worked the shifters. Then one day he came by and he had a new Ford 9000. It didn't have duel stick shifters. It had a single shifter road ranger. He eventually taught me how to drive that road ranger. I still remember, I am 60 years old now, and I have very fond memories of my uncle Frank. Mom and Dad, Grandma and Grandpa, aunt Mary and uncle Jr. They left my life one by one, but I can see them all clearly in my mind.

I am a recently retired p and d driver [pickup and delivery]. We are the unsung heroes of truck driving as we only drive local or regional; but handle every kind of freight imaginable in every kind of driving situation! Tight city streets, horrible loading dock areas in old brick inner city mill buildings, house deliveries down no truck streets in the middle of nowhere. Lots of fun! Anyway Steve you didn't mention the duplex transmission [twin sticks]. I started driving a 1971 Mack U model in 1982. No power steering, no air conditioning [you were lucky to have a dash fan!] and two shift levers! A ten speed manual. A five speed [closest to driver lever] coupled to a two speed taller lever closest to the passenger. No it did not require shifting with two hands as all you would do [especially when you're light] is skip gears. However when running heavy or starting up hill, you absolutely would have to use two hands. And to do this correctly, the non-synchronized transmission would require double clutching. A three ring circus going on in an already tiny, cramped, off center cab! Great video as always!

Bags of flour, sugar, doughnut filling, shortening and other supplies were all off loaded and hand delivered to the basement. I've been a Mack truck mechanic since 1997 and when I started my first job they were begining to phase out the U's and DM's in their fleet. I really loved the R model but the U and DM were almost impossible for me to drive comfortably being 6'2" tall. The R, U, and DM may have been slow by todays standards but they could pull just about anything. I've worked on quite a few million mile Mack's over the years. The new Mack's are OK but in my opinion, Volvo (parent company now) is slowly killing the nameplate. There is almost nothing "Mack" about a Mack truck anymore. Modern Macks are alot more comfortable and easier to operate going down the road but they have to be since the quality of truck driver's is not what it used to be. Most truckers I work with can't even operate a manual transmission anymore. Alot of states have amended driving regulations and now impose restrictions such as if you take you c.d.l. driving test in an automatic truck, you will be restricted from driving a manual unless you take a seperate test and get a manual transmission endorsement. Before I retire, I'll probably be replacing more battery packs and electric motors than diesel engine's and Mack will have to use a separate compressor and pump just to honk the air horn.

We'll try this again, as the post keeps dropping out... No, Mack was started in Brooklyn, NY in 1900 and moved to Allentown, PA in 1905. The bulldog emblem came about because of WWI and the British said the truck's front end looked like a bulldog and was just as tenacious as one. The bulldog emblem was designed by a Mack employee on home recovering from a surgery. A gold bulldog indicated/indicates a Mack engine and transmission, a silver with components by others, and copper for electric powered, but there are exceptions. Mack's motto was also, "No Mack Truck is an Orphan" because they believed in keeping parts and service alive for older models. They had "factory branches" in principal US cities which would also act as modification centers. I know of several in my area and my job has a facility right next door to a former one. Some became actual truck dealerships. Another was up the block from where I work now. Mack also has a service called the "Functional Museum" where they will do research if you give you a VIN number and give you production records, line sets and other interesting data on your vehicle. I wrote to them about 1959 Mack B Series that we had (one time in service, now a parade vehicle) and Mack was very interested in it saying it was, "Only one of one we ever built and where did you find it?" That old Mack was in storage for years and fired right up with fresh fuel, a new battery and cleaning the points (it's a gas engine). It's also a sharp looking truck. We have a few B Series trucks, they are all antiques now. They are a bygone era and a work of art. For a time, Renault owned Mack as did the Signal Companies, but eventually Volvo got involved and owns them now. Mack's HQ is in Greensboro, NC, but they still have production facilities in PA, including the Macungie, PA facility. We know this truck is pre-1981 as it doesn't have a 17-digit VIN number. I would have been interested to have seen the upfit decal on the door jamb area if it still existed. That would have give you a clue as to its former life. Mack was also known for fire apparatus and their CF chassis were legendary. They ran forever, required no more than basic maintenance and they were powerful and fast. The window regulator was a leather strap with holes in it much like a belt for your pants. The strap would be put into a notch depending on how far you wanted the window down. The engine tunnel threw enough heat to keep the cab warm. I still speak to some retired people I used to work with and they were all huge Mack fans and never really had an ill word to say about them. The expression back then was, "It's built like a Mack Truck".

I remember those trucks well. I worked for Cumberland Farms in their dairy and beverage processing plant over 30 years ago in Florence NJ and they had a bunch of those R and U models. On really cold winter days when the trucks would come back from their workday, they would not plug in the block heater. Instead, they would leave the trucks running at idle all night/day while they sat in the yard. Idling like that would not hurt a diesel and it made sure the engine was warm and cab as well by running the heater. That way when the driver came in to start his day, it was ready to go. That truck in this video was likely set up as a cement mixer or dump truck. The short exhaust pipe curving out like that gives you a clue as to what it did. It needs to be short like that to clear a dump bed or cement mixer body.

Oh I made my bones in a 66 Mack R190, that was a six wheel straight truck, with a 140 hp straight six Scania Diesel, feeding a Mack 5+2 twin stick transmission, that once proficient at shifting would require two hands to split shift, except for going from 3rd high to 4th low, where the shifts were side by side and you grabbed both together in one hand, never getting your fingers between them! The shoving them both together and going forwards into 4th low. At that time and up to the mid 80 s or so a Mack truck was the only totally integrated truck, meaning it was totally built my Mack, except for the tires and small accessories, like bulbs and radios. But engines, trans, axles, bodies and chassis all built by Mack.

I started driving truck in 1972. Diesel was cheaper than gas; I think 35 cents a gallon. I guess somehow the process changed ( one is refined, the other is distilled. Don't know which is which anymore). Sarcasm. They found out they could screw truckers because there are way more diesels now and trucks NEED diesel for more power.

Great Video Steve,.I have worked on alot of Macks of various models my years as a heavy truck mechanic. I found them to be the easiest trucks of the fleet to work on. Every part and component that required routine maintenance was well positioned. The oil filters were all acsessable one one side and while standing up, the main wiring junction block was right on the cowl The more you worked on them the more you got to appreciate the engineering that went into enabling maintenance and repair. Mack also used truly heavy duty parts from the dah switches ti the block every part was carefully speced. It is a shame that because they could not meet the emmision standards that Mack had to sell to VolVo. Just like Caterpillar they left the market. The companies are left have struggled to meet the burden. I like the way you are introducing trucks into your videos Alot of people dont have exposure to them but find it fascinating

Hello truckladders4104, THANKS for watching and writing. I'm a car guy because I simply never had access to REAL trucks as a kid growing up nor in my adult life. I was a big rig model kit builder in the early-1970's when AMT, Ertl, IMC and MPC really got into the 1/25 scale truck model kit marketplace and movies and TV shows like "White Line Fever" and "Movin' On" were popularizing the "owner / operator, modern American cowboy" lifestyle. And lets not forget C.J. McCall's pop song "CONVOY" for its part in making trucks and truckers "cool". From these songs, models and movies / TV shows I did learn a little bit about "Road Ranger" transmissions and "Jake Brakes" but again, BIG trucks are not my strength. But with some research I can do a little bit to give the trucks sitting at Bernardston Auto Wrecking "a voice" for a few minutes. Speaking of MORE trucks, there are about 6 nifty Big Rigs at Bernardston I'll be covering soon including a "Pete". Please stay tuned and THANKS AGAIN for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

I still see DMs every once in a while, typically the slightly redesigned hood version from the 1990s. Usually around here they're configured as roll-off dumpster haulers, I imagine having a shorter cab helps with backing into spaces to pick up containers.

Hi Steve, great video of this once awesome MACK truck. Probably the most famous MACK truck was a 'Triple Black' 1970 Mack RS700 driven by Martin "Rubber Duck" Penwald. But in the close up shots a 1977 Mack RS712LST is used. There was actually 4 different trucks used in the movie. If you are familiar with the movie, the overturning of Widow Woman's truck wasn't supposed to happen and was subsequently written into the script after it occurred. I had a couple of uncles that drove over the road. Both drove Peterbuilts 1 was a cabover almost painted up like BJ and the Bear's K-Wope. That uncle ended up marrying a high executive at Kenworth. The other uncle drove a big long nose Pete and he married a woman trucker and they had 2 trucks. Both long nose Petes. They had it set up where 1 truck would run 28 days (not sure why 28) while the other truck would be getting serviced and any repairs needed. They run the truck 24/7 each driving there shift daily. The trucks had names but I forget them now. This particular uncle lost his left eye due to a large bird of some kind crashed into the driver's mirror and this particular time he had his window down with his arm propped up on the door. The glass from the mirror and the mirror itself smashed up against the door of the truck sending glass into his eye. They were in the Dakotas or Wyoming and if you know that area of the country there's a whole lot of NOTHING on the interstate. So the story I got was dude had to wait until the next town some 30 or more mins away before any medical attention. I can only imagine the agony that was endored. I know for a fact after they retired they were multi-millionares from driving both trucks in such a way. They mostly hauled furniture and produce. The furniture came out of NC and the produce came from Cali. They are both gone now and I pray for their soul. I don't miss them at all tho. Both had bad tempers and both chain smoked KOOL cigarettes which is probably what killed them. The one with 2 trucks came to my grandparents one day and I was told to go eat somewhere else. The kitchen was needed for something I forget what it was. So when my uncle found out I wasn't eating in the kitchen he had some sort of conniption fit about it. He went outside and cut up my grandfather's garden hose. Brought a piece about 3ft long into the house and came to the room I was eating in. He told me to stop eating and get into the kitchen where you were supposed to eat but I refused because my grandma had sent me out. Well next thing I know he throws the hot bowl of soup in my face, followed by a rubber hose across my nose and a couple more across the face before I could get myself off the chair. He was 300lbs+ I was 13 at about 140lbs. When my grandfather heard stuff being broken he ran in to see me on top of my uncles shoulders pounding him in the head with both fists just as hard as I could throw them. We tore up the room breaking what-nots, picture frames etc. Eventually I was pulled off my uncle and he stomped out of the room. My face was covered in blood my nose wasn't completely fractured. Monday morning in school I had plenty to talk about (like I need a reason 🤣) with my black eyes and swollen nose. But I used this as an opportunity to get sympathy from the ladies 😎and it worked out definitely in my favor. It also did something I didn't know at the time and that was I received a rep that I was somekind of Bada$$ and the real tough guys didn't push me around as much anymore. I wish I had known that at the time I would have collected some of that change that I was strong armed out of.😂 Well that's WAY off the subject of today's Junkyard Crawl video. Sorry Steve. 😞 Remember never trust a man standing in front of you while eating, holding a cut off piece of garden hose. 🤣 Y'all have a blessed day everyone 🤙🏼 Namaste 🙏🏼

Mack, although owned by The Volvo Group. ( no relation to the cars now a days. ) All Mack trucks sold in the North American market are built in the states. All heavy trucks are still built in Pennsylvania. And the new medium duty Mack MD6 and MD7 are built the Carolinas. New England is still Mack country. The company I work for has a fully restored R model tractor that I bring to local shows.

We ran a lumber yard not too far from Allentown. I can't begin to tell you how many loads of lumber, cement, drywall, etc, I unloaded that were pulled by an R-Model. My friend's dad moved equipment with a Rogers lowbed behind a U-Model. With a little pump work those Maxidynes could really make some power. I knew many folks who worked for Mack, including a cousin who was a draftsman there.

As a vo-tech student in the late 70's, we took a trip to Allentown (about an hour away) to tour the Mack plant. It amazed me the variety of trucks built on the same line. The most memorable truck was a bright red fire tanker. While we were there, a guy was applying gold leaf to the lettering and striping. Fascinating! I never knew that Mack, or any other truck manufacturer, would do that in-house! On the way out, we went by a souvenir shop in the front lobby. I was sorely tempted to buy a Mack Bulldog hood ornament for my beat-up old '65 Chevy II 4-door!

Had a 1973 mack R 688 full size hood and 250 hp mack 5 speed it was originally built for yellow freight lines and sold to a friend of mine in late 1975 it didn't have factory air conditioning. He had a 1962 mack B71 it had the longest hood on the B series truck. It was originally a Scandinavian motor truck with the 18 speed duplex transmission and in 75 he was using the R model it was replaced with a 400 big cam Cummins and at that time you could order a bell housing and motor mounts for this motor swap from Mack trucks. The R model pulled a 22 foot dump trailer made from a 1948 ice trailer because they had the biggest frames. It hauled mica 7 days a week except Christmas day and Easter day it hauled from 1975 until 1999 when the Franklin mica plant sold out to over sea buyers from India. The truck then hauled from a wast water plant in Georgia and hauled construction equipment on a lowboy trailer. It was converted into a short 12 foot dump truck with dual axle still . It was traded to a company in Charlotte NC that does gold course paving in very tight places. We were using it for the same reason it was swapped even for a 1987 mack R model dump with a 19 foot dump bed and not sure about if it is still working today but it was still working 10 years ago.

@dandreger5616 Backing plates usually rust off or get tossed on big trucks. Disk brakes are something that don't seem to work well on trucks this big. At work the new snowplow trucks are coming with front disks, the mechanics aren't impressed at all so far. They had one all tore apart after only one winter in the salt. The old drum brakes required basic maintenance over the lifespan of a plow truck 10-15 years, very few issues with them.

From 1985-1992 I worked at a place called Transport Body Thero-King and we were a truck trailer body shop and Thermo-King dealer. We had an R-400 yard tractor. Single axle with a Scania engine. It was a bear and was already beat when we got it to replace the B model diesel that was beyond old and beat. It was a great tractor. We ended up getting rid of it and getting a Midliner series made by Renault. The reliability of those old Macks is legendary.
