I'm dropping part 2 with more detail. The monsters come from the Hiruko core deteriorating. As for the disaster, it's more than the city. The entire world got destroyed. It's fully explained in the manga but not yet for season 1.

I think you missed that Hiruko does not actually mean man-eater: it's probably a misunderstanding between Maru and Mikura. Totori (like Maru and Jugo) is a Hiruko but not a man-eater and we don't even know if they can actually develop the disease and turn into man-eaters.

That's fair. I agree with you. I tried to keep this vid centered on info you could get from the anime only. We know more from the manga and get to see a stressed distinction between hiruko and morphed hiruko there. I thought for anime only-watchers, Hiruko and man-eater were still synonymous. Especially from the first hotel scene when Kiruko and Maru say "man-eater" and "hiruko" simultaneously . I'll do another vid with all the info and fan theories to date based on the manga. And maybe talk about all the stuff the anime cut out.
