Tennis Forehand Topspin - 3 Ways To Get More Topspin On Your Forehand. Tennis players around the world want to generate more topspin on their forehands but don't know how to do so. In this tennis video lesson, coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will show you three different ways to get massive topspin on your tennis forehand.
When we want more power on our tennis forehand, it's important to try to flatten out the shot and extend the racket and hand towards our target, so the swing path becomes a more linear one.
When we want more topspin however, the spin path changes to a more vertical one. Imagine the ball as a clock face, six o'clock at the bottom and twelve o'clock at the top, when we want to hit with more topspin on our forehands, we want to try to brush upwards on the ball going from six to twelve o'clock. This vertical swing path allows us to use a low to high racket path.
Here are the three steps to getting more topspin on your forehand in tennis:
Step One - Using a low to high swing path which will allow you to brush upwards on the ball. 6-12 o'clock on the clock face.
Step Two - Dropping the racket head below the contact point. Many players struggle with this step, they tend to bring the racket head on the same level as the ball and then brush up, so they only use 50% of their upwards potential. Try to feel the entire racket head has dropped below the contact point which will allow you to brush upwards fully during the contact zone.
Step Three - Using the legs to drive upwards on the ball. When you want more topspin on your forehand, it's a good idea to use an open-stance forehand or a semi-open stance forehand. This will allow you to really load up on the outside leg which is the right leg for right-handed players, then push up off the ground creating good ground force which will result in a more explosive upwards motion with the racket.

thank you, my teaching pro is trying to teach me the same thing about dropping the racket head below the contact point, and it helps to see the same concept explained by multiple people is different words. For some reason, i get below the ball more reliably on my one-handed backhand, but i can't do it as consistently on my forehand, and when I'm missing forehands it erodes my confidence in both strokes.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Lesson on how to return heavy topspin balls. It always takes me a while to get used to balls hit by heavy topspinners....I do, but I seem to need to habituate myself each time, so it takes a while for me to get into the groove. I know I need to return using topspin myself, and I try right away, but it still takes awhile to get used to a particular player's shots. I'm going to be working on topspin myself since I have a groin injury and will have to play with just the ball machine until I heal up. thanks for the lesson. I can't wait to start working on it. My regular partners are going to be taken by surprise when they start getting high bouncers thrown at them rather than my usual flat hard shots! (evil laugh....)

Hi Coach. Question, at which point do you start dropping racket from the "power position ' in relationships to incoming ball. Thank you.
@briandtnguyen
@briandtnguyen 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this video Simon. When dealing with an incoming slice going into the forehand, would you suggest hitting the forehand with an open stance or stepping into it with a closed stance? The open stance forehand creates good forehand top spin for me but it feels so passive to me. In general, I don’t like the idea of waiting for the ball. And I feel like an open stance forehand makes me passively wait for the incoming ball, if that makes any sense. The closed stance forehand allows me to be more pro-active but severely limits my top spin. It’s such a dilemma for me.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
Neutral stance forehands work well on low slices if the ball is not coming in at high speeds. Remember when you step in, you take time away from yourself also. I often use the hop step onto the front foot when dealing with low slices. The closed stance forehand is something you want to avoid at all costs, this is where you step across your body line with the front foot. I've heard many coaches talk about the closed stance when they actually mean the neutral stance.

That’s what I do! I prepare with the racket head below the ball (as I’m supposed to) but I let the ball drop too low before making contact. It turns into either a really good flat shot (low margin for error) or it goes into the net. So as to hear this was my main problem. Because I set up low to begin with, I may need to hit the ball sooner.

Thank you so much for the relationship between open stance and top spin 5:55. I naturally preferred open or semi-open stance with semi-Western grip, I was able to hit heavy top spin a month after I re-started tennis. But until very recently I was not aware that you can also hit a forehand with a neutral stance with the body weight on the left leg. This kind of explains why I'm having issues with a two-handed backhand. For a long time, I was trying to hit a backhand with a closed stance with the body weight on the left leg. I could not swing forward well.

How much is the wrist of the hand doing the wiper motion? Or is it mostly the centrifugal force and path the racket makes due to the racket lag and swing path? I feel I'm kind of relaxed in the wrist all the time. I'm doing it right, right? :)

But aren’t they hitting through the ball instead of going up bc when I go straight up I just shank it when playing high level tennis. I can do this easily in 4.5 but once I start playing at my actual level in 5.0 plus its hard to time the ball properly by swinging up on it. Curious on your thoughts. And also forcing the wind shield wiper method also causes problem when facing high level shots for me
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
It's not directly upwards, otherwise you'll have no pace on the ball. It's between a horizontal and vertical path. With the flat forehand, you extend out towards your target much more. If you're struggling with the windshield wiper action against stronger players, it means you haven't mastered the action and made it a habit yet. It takes thousands of balls to get there, stay patient and keep working on it

@Bobo - Exactly what peacemsnger has said, play around with how much forward momentum you create, but also play around with the angle of the strings, prior to and after contact. If you close the string bed slightly, the ball will come off the racket lower but you can still get heavy topspin.

If u normally get more "height" from your normal strokes, then why dont u just lower your target. This way your strokes will get lower than your usual strokes. Hmm🤔

when do you want to hit with more top spin? And is top spin a defensive shot or attack shot?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
Normally when you want to build the point, topspin allows you to be aggressive with the racket head speed but maintain high levels of consistency. Hitting with topspin can be aggressive and can be used when defending too. Simon

What do you say about the palm/racket face facing the back fence in the backswing to create a longer swing path? 1:11 Kind of like this one of Djokovic kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hN2PZaxj0Nm8Y4k.html at 8 seconds in. What are your thoughts regarding the different swings?

The angle of the strings in the power position will largely be influenced by the grip and the position of the wrist. I think it's important for players to experiment and see what works for them. Thanks for watching Are there any lessons you would like to see in the near future?

Federer looked good in Halle, the draw is more on Djokovic's side though. I think Rafa has a terrible draw, he could lose in the 2nd round if Nick is up for it. I predict a Djokovic vs Federer final with Djokovic taking the title. Anything can happen though, it is grass after all
@dorryoku919

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Most likely outcome imo. I'm rooting for rafa now because his draw is tough. If he makes it far into the tournament (2nd week) he would have had some tough matches. The further he gets into the tournament, the harder it'd be to stop him because he'd be getting more comfortable
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial

The weather will also help or hinder Rafa. Last year we had the best summer ever in the UK, London was sunny almost every day all summer, in fact, most parks turned brown (the grass) and Rafa done well. If it's wet and colder, those conditions really mess with Rafa's style of play and suit the flatter hitters.

Please explain when it is more desirable to increase topspin, and when it's more desirable to increase power. You mentioned it several times, but didn't explain the strategic difference.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 5 жыл бұрын
That is more a tactical lesson, something we'll cover inside our new singles strategy course. But in general, if the ball is higher than the net level and you're close to or inside the court, you can flatten out the shot. If the ball is deep and pushes you back or is lower than the net level, more likely you'll want to hit with good topspin. All the best Simon
