This video will show you how to practice to develop more effective groundstrokes. Most players practice to improve their strokes without really understanding what they want to accomplish with their strokes. The correct way to look at strokes is from a tactical point of view. Strokes are nothing more than tools to implement effective tactical concepts. Tennis is not a form sport like gymnastics. It does not really matter how your strokes look. The important thing is what you can do with your strokes. By understanding this and practicing correctly you will see great improvement in your results.

Yes! On many videos made to teach tennis they only talk about one stroke, showing the "one" right way to hit a ball. It's the first time I see someone change the focus to strategy first. Very eye opening!

Makes perfect sense. Play with purpose not like a senseless robot. Thanks Edgar.

After listening for about 4-5 seconds I am hooked. I agree with your approach entirely. In tennis (and in life) we count outputs (or outcomes) not inputs. Effectiveness comes first, then efficiency. Efficiency means reliably and consistently achieving our goals with minimum inputs and minimum effort. subscribed immediately.

Been a keen follower of your videos for a while now and agree with what you say. I would like to see how you actually teach players this and how you get them to practice this.

Hi Lee, the best way to do that is to buy my book Developing High Performance Tennis Players. You will know exactly how to do it. It is perfectly explained there with a lot of drills that you can use.

Excellent. Matthew Syed described this kind of development as an upcoming olympic table tennis player in the book Bounce. His coach continually gave him driills and situations way out of his comfort zone that targeted the likely tactics of his opponents. Initially he made a lot of errors but with persistence was able to handle even extreme situations.

In tennis the best players are not the ones that hit the best ball but the once that adapt better

Thank you Jan, I am glad you find the information useful. I would appreciate a short comment on the books on Amazon or IBooks if you have the time. Good luck with your tennis.

Adapting is the thing I find hardest, you play away, and the balls are different, the courts are different, the opponent hits differently. All my ball reading is off and I miss-time/miss-hit repeatedly. I just can't adapt fast enough.

Start with what you want to do and only then, start to work on how to achieve your goals.

That sounds like a better approach but we sometimes are not able to see the forest for the trees.

What does Slice shots fit in the 5 variations that you suggested?
@GiffenigTennis

You can think about the slice in the same way. You should be able to hit: a neutral slice, a short slice (dipping) a high slice (lifting), a shoulder level slice and an off the bounce slice. However, a topspin base will always be more effective.

Are you trying to get all those shots included in the warmup before a match?
@GiffenigTennis
@GiffenigTennis 3 жыл бұрын
That is harder to do in the pre match warm up, but if you have time to hit for 20 minutes before you play the match, I would add them to the warm up

After all, the objective of the game is to beat an opponent not just hit the ball well.
