DO: - Hit Deep loopy balls when on the defensive (Point 1) - Hit deep loopy balls to opponents weaker side (Point 2 extra) - Take Advantage of short balls and come to net (Point 4) - Take vidieo and analyze your matches (Point 5) DONT: - Hit low % shots when out of position (Point 2) - Hit back the opponent instead of the open court (point 3 for context)

Would love a how-to on recording matches to a cellphone, including: A. memory req’s per minute at different resolutions (+ your recommended res) and B. h-2 transfer to computer/cloud and maybe C. h-2 edit out examples of shots/situations for long term storage, ie keep track/verify progress? I know that’s a lot AND I could look it all up myself, but A. I’m a lazy, no-good s.o.b. and B. I would like to know what you recommend as there’s a plethora of information out there and I’d rather not drown in it. But mostly A. (Oh, and I forgot to add that I’m an UNABASHED lazy, no-good s.o.b.) So here’s looking forward to your upcoming excellent video on the above subjects, with special mention going out to a certain someone who requested these also-excellent topics, whoever that genius was. (Note that I’m also UNABASHEDLY obnoxious.) Cheers!

13:00 Totally agree! That was a point to be won for a list of reasons: 1) Open Court, 2) Short Ball, 3) Forehand Shot, 4) To the Opponent's Backhand, and 5) Opponent was WAY out of position to cover a simple DTLF.

Great question! The best time to approach the net is when you receive a short ball and your opponent is out of position. You should come to the net off most balls that land short regardless of whether your opponent is out of position or not, though. To read the situation better, practice reading your opponent's postures and ask yourself whether he/she is on the defense, neutral, or in an offensive position. You can even verbalize these words during practices. Best of luck, Abdullah!

Thanks Mehrban - welcome and useful. However, I'd disagree with you on number 3. Yes, the open deuce court area is superficially inviting but anyone playing at 4.5 should have no difficulty making a running cross court forehand which would be very difficult for white shirt to handle in turn. There's the related point that red shirt on the far side hadn't moved much back to the relevant centre (which better players would ordinarily do); although that certainly helped him luckily connect with the shot even then his return failed by being snatched and going long. Yes, an angled soft volley is also good but, IMO, a sliced, deep volley to the feet and behind red shirt is best. Compare it with the next point, number 4. Yes, the short ball should then indeed have been played by red shirt to the open court but there was a crucial difference, namely the forward positioning of the near side player, white shirt, which meant that he not only had to run to the side he also had to turn and run back - far harder than the open court situation in number three would have been and therefore the two instances are very different.

7:00 Question/Comment. Down the line would have left the far player (not Subash) more open. I believe he made the right tactical play and missed the shot. Had he gone for the up the line, unless Subash was unable to get to the shot, Subash would have had the whole court to get into with his forehand especially cross court.

Agree. Moreover, he'd have to run much more of his opponent to get back in position. And, last point, he'd make his opponent hit a crosscourt forehand, strong high percentage shot. Worst possibile choice

Fair point but I don't like the short angle he went for. Playing the percentages with a deep high crosscourt backhand would have been much more solid and given him more time to recover.

I think a high loopy ball with topspin to the middle of court is a better safer option to have time to recover . Important to get it deep though. Still whatever shoot you do from that far out will give your opponent the advantage

10:00 Comment: I agree with you that the volley could have easily been played straight ahead and the the attacking player would have been in position for the next shot. As it was his first volley taken high but deep in the court (just inside the service line) it would make sense to set up the next volley without the attacking player having to change sides of the court. However, arguments can be made for both options and ultimately, he did win as the aggressor.

There are arguments for both, and I like the aggressive play overall! I also am fine with it if the player's backhand is significantly weaker.

My biggest mistake is going in to a match with no game-plan or strategy. I've finally started to learn that I feel more calm and collected during matches when I already have a plan in place or an idea of where I'm going to aim the ball

Awesome to hear and definitely a very important lesson learned, game plans are so key! Even if you don't know who you are playing against, you can create a game plan for yourself to execute based on your strengths and weaknesses. Feels much better having a plan in place. Cheers man!

Coaching tips that will definitely win matches. I. Always hit the ball in the court. 2. Always hit an ace or winners 3. Always get the return of serve back in the court 4 Hit winners or shots that force errors on your return of serve 5. Hit your ground strokes deep and your drop shot short 6. Hit overheads that bounce over the fence 7. Win the last point of the match. This is the most important! If you execute all the above tactics you will win. The odds of being able to follow all the above tips are slim to none and Slim left town.

When you mentioned stepping in on that high loopy ball and hit it on the rise, don't you think it's higher percentage to volley it out of the air vs hitting it off the bounce?

Your question of the day. One of my mistakes is my return of serve, down the middle with not a lot of depth or pace, which puts me immediately on the defensive when my opponent pounces on the short ball. I'm a 4.0.

Thanks for letting me know! Returning down the middle is great but you don't want it to be short and with no pace. Definitely work on your returns in your next practice. The beauty about returning down the middle is you can go for more pace and depth vs aiming down the line or crosscourt as you are more likely to hit those returns wide! Step in and go for your returns down the middle!

My mistake: Not recognizing opportunities to get into the net, or hanging back when I should go in, because I am afraid of the lob.

Glad you recognize this area of your game that you can improve, Christine! If you pull your opponent off the court or notice them moving backwards, that's the time to step in and anticipate a short ball. The more you go to net, the more practice you'll have recognizing what situations are more likely to cause the opponent to lob. You may not want to get too close to the net so that way you'll be able to cover the lob as well. Cheers!

Problem - chip too many backhand returns from wide in the ad court to the tee against strong players.

Watching my shot and not recovering quickly enough or not moving in as soon as I see my opponent will be off balance.

It's totally ok and often effective to hit to the middle (smaller angles for your opponents to hit) but I suggest you work on hitting deeper and with more spin so that your opponent's can't attack your shot! :) Cheers and good luck David!!
